Salinger is one of my (many) favourite authors so I'm definitely adding My Salinger Year to my never ending tbr list hahaHello! Lurker here who has finally decided to join the chat. I finished an accounting qualification in December so I'm excited to be able to get back into reading books that aren't coursebooks
I am reading This Is London by Ben Judah, which is really getting up close to illegal immigration in London and the horrible treatment and exploitation of these people. I think it's pre-2016 so I'd be interested in a post-Brexit update of how this has affected attitudes (for the worse I would imagine).
I have My Salinger Year for after I have finished which I'm hoping will be somewhat cheerier.
Would like to get more into using the library but I hate having a set time to finish a book which is why I never got into book clubs

While we’re (kinda) on the topic of classics, has anyone read Middlemarch? I started at the beginning of December and I’m enjoying it but it’s so dense I’m taking breaks for other books 
i have! i really liked it for the most part but i did find that the most interesting plot (dorothea and will) kept getting ignored for all the side characters. it really is a very dense read but worth it.While we’re (kinda) on the topic of classics, has anyone read Middlemarch? if you want to read george elliot then i would go for the mill on the floss instead - it’s a much more readable book imo as it focuses on a smaller group of characters. or if you want a george elliot type thing that’s much less dense then read any elizabeth gaskell!

)I loved Mill on the Floss, and had no trouble getting hooked on it, I’m also a huge Gaskell fan but Middlemarch has defeated me a couple of times. If anyone else is like me and struggles to pick from their TBR, I've stolen an idea I saw on Twitter. I've written all the books down that are on my TBR onto small pieces of paper, folded them up and put them in a jar and I'm going to pick one for my next read. I'm so indecisive when it comes to choosing a book to read that I often end up not choosing one at all.
There's also a # on Twitter #beatthebacklog for those wanting to set themselves a goal/not buy any more books.

Some of their prompts will be good for me. As I have such a big backlog it is nice to have a challenge to steer me towards what to read next. Otherwise I just end up reading my newest purchases.
I’ve just finished my first 2022 book - The Night She Disappeared by Lisa Jewell. It was ok but I didn’t really feel excited to pick it up.
I’m finally starting Dune by Frank Herbert. It’s been on my TBR list for ages but kept putting it off as it’s so long I was worried it would effect my end of year total

Someone mentioned George Eliot which made me think of Silas Marner. It's over 30 years since I read that book (and saw the movie) but I still vaguely remember it and know it was enjoyable despite being a novel for school. I think I need to read it again.
I read them years ago. They are very addictive and I enjoyed them a lot back then. It's not really what I enjoy reading anymore but it was a fun time.

Recent hardback releases are down to clearance, everything from Richard Osman to Miriam Margolyes, Katherine Ryan and more.
Most were around £7.50 but i managed to pick up Mel Brooks' new biography for £5.
Deffo worth having a look.
