I regret to inform you all that I am twenty percent through and rather enjoying it
This is me every time I chose ‘hopefuls’ for the month… internal monologue is ‘pfft feels like homework’ whilst knowing full well these are books I *really* wanted to read.
Decided to pull my finger out & try to get back to reading.
Starting with Inspector Montalbano by Andrea Camilleri, loved the tv series & I was about halfway through the series of books when I kind of stopped, so I'm starting at the beginning again

Just finished Map of Bones by Kate Mosse.
I've read all of her Languedoc trilogy and now all four Joubert family chronicles and I've got to say with this and the last one I think her writing has gone backwards.
Lots of easy conveniences to get the lead characters out of trouble, lots of pointless to ing and fro ing that could easily have been cut out and not affected the plot at all.
And she's fallen into the trap of trying to squeeze historical fiction into a narrow modern mould. The female characters are all 21st century Girlbosses and not realistic 17th/19th century women.
Not to mention all the characters who keep bringing their internal monologues to a screeching halt so they can have long chats with themselves about how Racism Is Bad. Show, don't tell!
I read it pretty quickly to find out what was going to happen - and virtually nothing did!
I'm glad I only paid 99p!

A character in the 1600s goes all the way from Europe to South Africa to find a diary, and then her descendent makes the journey in the 1800s to find THE SAME bleeping DIARY, and learn the same things we the reader already learned the first time!!!!

Only managed to finish one book for March and that was Aphrodite by Phoenicia Rogerson. 3

Who would have thought a book about death would be so sad?! I’m 80% through and not ok. It’s devastating
Have you ever done an “immersive read”? Apparently it is when you read a book and listen to the audiobook at the same time. I have never and I don’t think I could ever. I fear it would just lead to sensory overwhelm!

and you have to read at the same as the audio, seems stressful. I guess a bit like watching a film with the captions turned on, ok sometimes, annoying other times. Maybe if it's like a dramatised version and you have the book in front of you to keep track of everything then i could see some benefit
I tried this the other day and I hated it. I love audio books and I love reading on my kindle - but both at the same time was awful. I read my kindle so quickly that I just got frustrated at the slow speed of the audiobook. I do sometimes up the speed of an audiobook but I still don’t think it would match my own reading speed. I’ll definitely be sticking to just one method at a time.
Only when I had read along books as a kid
I don't see the point as an adult, but I'm really not into audiobooks so it might be different for someone who actually enjoys them.
Oh that’s a very good point. I didn’t even think of matching the pace of the audiobook narrator. That would be so stressful!
I did once and found my brain/eyes would read the lines faster than the narrator and I'd keep reading ahead and ignoring the narrator
it's not for me.
I don't think I could. I don't quite skim read but I definitely skip over lines and that's one of the things that annoys me about audiobooks, the feeling that I have to pay attention to every word even if it feels like filler.
For that reason, tend to listen to more popcorn books, knowing it's probably fine if I zone out and read books I want to pay more attention to. I'm not looking for the same thing with either and can't imagine really wanting to read immersively.
