I’ve got into the habit of reading before bed, which is good in a way but I’m finding I’m ONLY reading before bed, as opposed to picking my kindle up during the evening or on weekends like I was doing before!

Anyone reading the new Asako Yuzuki book, Hooked? I enjoyed Butter, I am enjoying this so far (chapter 10).
Finished Theo of Golden this morning and unfortunately it’s another one going on the “don’t fall for the hype” pile! It wasn’t a bad book necessarily, the first 1/4 and the last few chapters were good, but the middle chunk was just tedious to read. Nothing happened and most of the characters weren’t fleshed out enough to really care about.
The twist of Theo being Asher’s father also felt cliche and predictable, and for me still didn’t really explain why he was buying and giving away portraits one by one. To support his secret son’s art maybe, but as a world famous rich man there must have been other more straightforward, lucrative ways he could do that? It didn’t really make sense to me other than it was the authors way of trying to create “meaningful” plot lines and characters that didn’t really land for me.

I love a weird book. Anyone else?? Growing up my dad got me into Kurt Vonnegut, Orwell, Kafka, Stephen King, Catch-22... Classic dad stuff I would guess? Now I love anything a bit magical realist, horror, anything a bit mid century or historical, anything about relationships but with a weird twist.
I love a random library find. But I'm also quite picky and end up having weeks or months off from reading where I can't find anything I like, so always welcome recommendations!

They've had a lot of problems with online recently, even when you could order online the lead time was several days, no next day delivery or anything like that. And I read their amount of online sales had declined so much since their online delivery had changed to a different fulfillment provider and was very slow, so it probably is not worth them having online sales anymore n
Oh, I wasn't aware of the change in delivery. I'm in Ireland. Usually do click and collect as there is a store nearby but the online book selection is much bigger so it worked for me. Shame to see it go but glad I can go to the shop here for my quarterly stock up of books

I’m surprised they haven’t even gone for a middle ground eg. click and collect store stock.

I’m sooooooooo disappointed by this new Meg Mason. I LOVED her first two novels so much and I was SO excited when I got the arc for her third. I started it immediately. But I am just trudging through it. It’s so boring and dull and meh. If it was anyone else I’d have DNF’d by now.

as a maggie o’farrell fan i was shocked by how much i didn’t like hamnet. i keep meaning to reread it to see if i just wasn’t in the mood for it!all of gabrielle zevin’s books that aren’t tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow also fell flat for me, likewise the familiar by leigh bardugo (her other books are so clever and dark but that one was so dull).
I feel like the series just gets better with each book. I think I am crushing on JackThank you to whoever recommended J D Kirk. Finished the first one and quarter into second one. Will definitely be carrying on til I’ve read them all.

I did really like Storied Life and Elsewhere of Zevin’s.
I had to drag my eyes through The Familiar… 🥱
yes! wonderful acting and music, but i did feel similar to the book in that it was manipulating me to feel sad rather than just letting me feel the emotions organically (i think that was my main issue with the book!) paul mescal though
Does disappointed in someone you thought could become beloved author count cos I feel like this about Victoria Hislop! I loved The Island so much when it first came out and have had to rebuy it several times over the years as I leant people copies and never got them back, but every other book of hers I’ve tried has been a massive let down. To the point where I don’t even bother reading anything she writes now. Such a shame she peaked with her first book (IMO anyway!).
