I’ve started In Memoriam this week for a book club. I’m only 50 or so pages in but I’m really not in the mood for it. I want to be reading Christmas fluff and cosy mysteries
My hand is twitching to pick up Good Spirits.. I wanted to complete my alphabet challenge first but.. but..

i love in memoriam with EVERY FIBRE OF MY SOUL but agree it’s not the right book for this time of year. give it a chance next year 🥲
Thanks, I think you’ve helped me decide. I don’t want to grudge reading it and then not enjoy it

Good Spirits is sitting waiting for me to pick it up closer to Christmas. I’m starting Lessons in Chemistry this weekend. And then will read my book club Christmas pick , a Sarah Morgan called The Christmas Book Club

You know what an innocent little flower I am .......well, I seem to have caused a bit of a stir in the Royal thread about that book I mentioned on here that I'm having audio read to me.
I must have been fast asleep for the whole of 1995. I don't remember the court case and Prince Charles hounding the author before eventually giving her an official pardon. I know it says it's been banned in Britain, so maybe all the hoo ha about it was in the media abroad. Maybe our press were banned from mentioning it. Who knows?🤷‍♀️

Sorry. It's this one I'm on about:

Does anyone else remember this causing such a stir in 1995 or am I seriously losing the plot?

It’s just impossible to not buy books isn’t it? Got 2 in the charity shop this morning and a few that’s I’d added to my list as November Kindle’s deals and December kindle deals start on Monday. I’ve just given up the fight

I was 18 in 1995 so probably didn’t pay any attention to the Royal Family

So, having cancelled certain pre orders. And found some additional books to pre order. I've only had to actually buy 2 books straight away, and have justified it as not real money for the other 8 pre orders that are released over the space of around 6 months in 2026. All in the pursuit of triple points. 😂😂 And if I'd buy them anyway, might as well get the triple stamps.

All in all I feel like I have a good selection of books to look forward to for the first half of 2026.

My recent reads:
Satantango by Krasznahorkai - I think since he won the Nobel literature prize and I’ve seen some reviews of the book I expected a bit more? I quite enjoyed the story telling of it and felt like plenty was happening (which seems different from the reviews I read) but just couldn’t really get anything deeper from it

Granted I feel like literature like this requires a whole course of knowledge and reading around it before you can enjoy it to its fullest degree

I’ve decided to read the international booker longlist. I enjoy the whole bookshopping experience but I think it was just getting to the point where I felt like I wasn’t branching out outside my comfort zone.

I picked up The Book of Disappearance by Ibtisam Azem and honestly it may be one of the most impactful books I have ever read. The geopolitical situation definitely plays a role in it but I also found the writing outstanding. It’s also like… the overall plot sort of just serves as a background to the relationship between the characters and what makes them people? So much happens but also so little happens in the grand scheme of things

I dip in and out of the threads, but on a recommendation on a Facebook group, read Mondays Not Coming by Tiffany Jackson. I finished a few days ago but I cannot stop thinking about it! It’s one of those reads that will stay with me!

do you mean heated rivalry? i haven’t read it yet but the series is on my kindle waiting for me! i’ve heard that it verges on pwp at times (and the tv series is very spicy!) but is a good read.

Charity shop bus buying doesn't count. It is just a donation to help cancer care/the elderly/homeless

I don't use my Kindle everyday, but I upgraded from a very ancient Kindle keyboard, and I mean 15+ years old (says something for their lasting power) and upgraded last year. Obviously I am going to see a dramatic improvement. But I think if is us something that will make your life easier - better font, easier scrolling, whatever then it is an investment rather than a "just because."

What are we all reading this weekend?

I think I am going to start That Bird Has My Wings by Jarvis Jay Masters.

It is the autobiography of a man who has sat on death row for 30+ years. 22 of those in solitary confinement.

Oh. And he is innocent. America's justice at its finest. 😡

What I love about charity shop books is that I feel like it’s the books that find me, rather than me going out to buy specific books.

If it’s a book on my very long wishlist or something that just really appeals, then it’s the universe saying ‘now is the time for you to read this book. Buy it’.

That’s my excuse anyway 😂

Thank you everyone for your opinions on whether I should buy a Kindle last week. I dithered enough on Saturday morning that I missed the cut off for same day delivery so I decided to wait until Sunday to buy but I Still haven’t bought it. My new plan is I currently have £100 of gift cards on my Amazon account and am likely to get more for Christmas so if I wait, I can probably get the kindle for free with gift cards which seems like a good deal to me so I’m not going to buy this Black Friday, perhaps next Prime Day if it’s reduced or I’ll wait till Black Friday next year.

Waterstones have done an absolute dirty with the triple points. I checked the Ts and Cs and it does include pre-orders. I’ve got a £105 basket sitting in my account, half are pre-orders and half are not. What pre-orders does everyone have? I’m going to see if I can pay nothing now and still get £30 of points :)
