Has anyone read Take My Hand by Dolen Perkins-Valdez? It’s historical fiction but based on a true story. I can’t believe I didn’t know anything about it. It was beautifully written but something felt a bit off about the pace for me so I gave it 4*.

I don't know about that story in the States, but it doesn't surprise me.:( This is from the BBC, interviewing women in Greenland who were fitted with IUDs without their consent. CW, it's pretty grim. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-63863088
https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-63049387 and a news article

Yes, I read it a couple of years ago. I remember enjoying it but it wasn't necessarily a stand out book so your take on it sounds about right to me. Definitely interesting from the historical point of view though, pretty shocking to think about what women & girls went through.

Random one but can anyone recommend any ‘marriage in crisis’ romance books? I know it’s quite particular and not a very popular written about trope but I feel like I need a deep book to read and have only read a couple and realised I love them!

Would An American Marriage fit the bill? It’s a crisis within their marriage but by a crime rather than over time,

ohhh! There's a new release that might interest you - I was reading the blurb of it at Waterstones the other day.

Avail at the Works with pretty edges: https://www.theworks.co.uk/p/adult-...TnMMVpYQmU1r5tH1wcK8nejkBygaD-HhoCxUkQAvD_BwE

I've also definitely read a historical romance with the marriage in crisis trope but can't remember it off the top of my head. If I do I shall report back!

Edit: In my googling I saw that thread favourite Georgette Heyer has one - April Lady. But perhaps someone here has read it?

Speaking of tropes, what is everyone’s favourite romance fiction trope?

I’ll go.. I do love an affair story (don’t come for me) or essentially forbidden love or love that just can’t seem to happen. I’ve really enjoyed recently The Paper Palace and 28 Summers and both feature this theme. And if I read a book synopsis that mentions an affair/forbidden love it does grab me.

I hadn’t thought about it much, but I’m dipping my toes in BookTok and keep seeing people say that they like certain tropes…

I think this is a sequel in a duology - the first is “Out on a Limb” and I think this sequel is about the main couple in the first books married friends.

Funnily enough I was wondering if The Paper Palace would fit the bill as a suggestion

Enemies to lovers 👌 the tension is too much.

Also like golden retriever x black cat.

SLOW BURN. like the slowest burn possible. i want them blushing over brushing fingertips for at least 200 pages, i hate instalove or stuff where there’s absolutely no buildup. it’s all about the YEARNING for me the MUTUAL PINING. no one does good yearning anymore, i want them looking over just as the other person looks away 😭😭

my fanfic days (still ongoing) mean i absolutely love fake relationships where they have to share a bed and pretend to be a couple (bonus points if they have to attend lots of family functions and maybe it’s christmas).

i love a wonderful angsty forbidden love story like you though. even better if it’s angst with a happy ending. i really like enemies to lovers but i feel like it’s so rare to find it done well. again, thank you fanfic though 👌🏻

Thankyou so much! Will add them!

My fave trope is also Enemies to lovers!
My least fave is friends to lovers, I still read them but find it a bit boring.

Slow Burn is top tier. Which reminds me I'm due a Mariana Zapata re-read...

Being at my heart a historical romance girl I love a reformed rake. But tbh that's also thanks to fanfiction and my love for a Draco Malfoy redemption arc.

Same i don't really read romance because every book i picked up seemed to be the enemies to lovers type, and i just found it too predictable and too often, not well written so now I steer clear!

omg i will read he’s the toast of the ton the most eligible bachelor in london but never took the season seriously until he gets caught up in the schemes of a girl he’s never met before a BILLION times over and never get tired. thank you georgette heyer!

slow burn is elite and i think one of the things that bothers me so much with romances these days is that everything is so rushed even if the book is like 500 pages long.
