Thanks to the person who posted the NYT 21st century best books list! Read only 15 but rushed to the library to get as many as I could (29 added to the TBR but can only borrow 10 max ). Got a mix of fiction and non-fiction, very excited to dig in! Making list of books to read does something to my brain, like a child going to the candy store

I'm irrationally annoyed by long books. I always feel like they probably needed more editing. Obviously that's a me problem However, I loved Demon Copperhead. It was one of the few books I've read in recent years where I thought about the characters afterwards and cared what happened to them.

I haven't listed to the audio version, but would imagine it's really good!

I read Caledonian Road recently which was 600+ pages. I’ve got The Bee Sting next to read also 600+ and then Demon Copperhead Marathon reading.

Silly thing is I’ve read chonky books in the past! Order of the Phoenix is 816 pages… flew through it. But that was 20 years ago my old brain can’t cope now

Every time I see this book title it reminds me of The Demon Headmaster which was a TV series when I was a kid. I am curious, I may have to look into this Demon Copperhead book...

Just finished The Familiar by Leigh Bardugo and found it slightly underwhelming in comparison to Ninth House and Hell Belt, but I did still really enjoy it!

I really want to get into more books with those demonic/paranormal themes but set in dark academia. I tried The Atlas Six but just didn't vibe with any of the characters or the plot but I have now just bought When We Were Villains so hoping that gets me slightly closer to where I wanna be

I love If we were villains, but I will warn you, its not paranormal. Just incase that was what you were expecting. Its a great dark academia read but more thriller than fantasy.

I gave it 3 stars, it's probably a 3.5 for me. I think it's a bit long and I was sad to not connect to the characters in the way others have. It's well written and definitely becomes more engagaing but also a bit predictable if you've seen or read much about the opioid issues in the US. Tbh it reminded me a bit of A Little Life with the way it continued to heap on trauma and a checklist of issues.

I've just started reading Watership Down. Has anyone else read it? The film traumatised me a little when I was a kid but I still think back to it nostalgically. I don't really remember what happens in it though.
Hopefully I enjoy the book and then I will rewatch the film (if I can find it to stream somewhere ).
I love that the rabbits have their own language, it adds an interesting element to the story.


I'm also listening to The Secret History and it seems so dull 🥲. It reminds me a lot of the Atlas Six. Maybe I'm just not a dark academia person?

I read it when I was younger but don't remember it all that well. There is another book called Tales from Watership Down that I was OBSESSED with, it's like the folklore of the rabbits.

I thought The Secret History was really boring everyone loves it so much I was wondering what I was missing. Between that and Demon Copperhead I think maybe high praise of books ruins them for me

I am finally on holiday and have started Binding 13, been saving all the Boys of Tommen for when I’m on holiday. 150ish pages in and I’m loving it

@jojida just echoing @tam about When We Were Villians. I absolutely loved it but there’s no paranormal/demonic/fantasy at all.

This morning I finished I Let You Go by Clare Mackintosh. Looks like all the other thrillers out there but it was written in 2014. I really enjoyed it and thought the story worked out well rather than tagging you along for ages and then revealing a stupid ‘twist’ with 2 pages to go.

A friend suggested The Wasp Factory by Iain Banks to me, which I read last week. They often suggest ‘interesting’ books and I can safely say it was ‘interesting’. Anyone else read it?

Phewf I don’t know whether to pick up something I’m confident will be good - or something I have zero expectations of next. Either way I need a reset!

I'm reading The Tenth Muse by Catherine Chung and loving it. I'm about 50 pages in and it's really captured my attention so far.

Finished Eve Chase's latest one, The Midnight Hour, this morning and it was ok. Probably my least favourite of hers and bits of the twist were very predictable.

Tom Lake was one of my favourites last year and imagine it's even more special after reading that Mhairi one haha

I’m about 20% into Tom Lake and agreeing with the love for it so far! Bumped it up my TBR after seeing it on the NY Times list, and because of the good comments here of course! Really liking the multi generational, mother/daughter dynamics.
