same! i’ve learnt to be a little more brutal when i do my library inventory and think “did i LOVE this? will i reread it? do i want to own it forever?” if the answer to any of those is no then i donate it. i am lucky to have a lot of bookshelves though!

don’t put pressure on yourself over it all though! if you love the book, then absolutely keep it. bookshelves are the window to someone’s soul and all that

Yep, I've definitely learned to be more brutal with books as I think in exactly the same way as you as I say to myself "did I love this book enough in order to reread it again and will I be reading it again in say a couple of years time". If the answer is no then I will either give the book to a charity shop or try to sell it on the table top/car boot that I do with my mum. Like you I do have a lot of bookshelves but at the moment they are all stacked up with books.

If the book is very good then I will absolutely keep it as I can reread it so many times and never ever get bored of it. I honestly just love reading books.

reading you belong with me by mhairi mcfarlane right now and i’ve always liked everything else by her that i’ve read but the dialogue in this is so bad. clunky dialogue is my number one gripe with books and everyone in this speaks in such a robotic way, it’s really offputting. i’ll persevere as the story is interesting enough but

I only have one shelf! It's full. I'm determined to keep it down only because I'm in the process of selling my house. Good job they can't see in the drawer under my bed which is a big drawer and crammed with books I don't want to get rid of lol when I move I'm having an actual bookcase all to myself!

They’re very relaxed with library fines these days! It’d be worth checking what your local library’s rules are. My local library service here in Scotland hasn’t charged for late books since 2022. The move away from fines is seen as a way to make libraries more accessible, including for those who might not be able to afford an accidental late book fine.

My library doesn't do fines any more, so I expect it's the same everywhere. Plus you can manage your library account online - renewing, placing holds on books etc.

Mine still fines! 20p for 1 day overdue the other day! It also locks my account if I have more than £5 owing so i have to be careful to only reserve 4 books at a time

I think my library still issues fines but because you can renew with the app it’s not a problem for me. I love the library and use it a lot, saves me a fortune and the librarians are always on hand with recommendations.
And yes I still have overflowing bookshelves and a Kindle with over 400 books on it 🫣

Folks, I’m about a third of the way through Talking at Night and maybe my expectations were too high but I’m just finding it entirely meh.

I gave up half way! I definitely believed the hype and was disappointed.

you may have already read it, but red, white and royal blue is a must (and probably changed the whole genre a bit). i’d recommend anything by alexis hall (especially boyfriend material) and i’ve loved everything i’ve read by kj charles (she mainly does historical romances, they are very fun!). i haven’t read it yet but the charm offensive by alison cochrun is meant to be lovely, and i liked a marvellous light by freya marske a lot too. sure more will come back to me later

I searched for red white and royal blue and I apparently bought it a year ago so I’ll read that one first! I do love a friends to lovers trope. The others have been added to the list, I’m quite excited!

Has anyone read The Next Mrs Parrish? I finished it tonight and I’m disappointed. I gave the first one 5 stars but this one only a 3. It took till about 75% for anything to really happen and for me to care then the last 25% were good but so far fetched. I took less than 24 hours to read the first one but this took me 10 days as I just didn’t feel the need to know what happened. What is it with new sequels this year that just seem to be absolutely rubbish?

I finished my 18th book of the year last night, In Ascension. I’m not really sure what I expected but it was definitely not my usual genre (sci fi / first contact style). Rated it 3.5 stars.

Started A Certain Hunger by Chelsea Summers this morning. It’s an interesting premise. Think I might whip through it. Has anyone read it ?

I've just started House of Earth and Blood. I feel like I'm being bombarded by names, places and situations and I can't remember who everyone is and what sort of creature they are. Very tempted to DNF already. I'd just finished Weyward before which was very easy to read, so maybe that house clouded my judgement?

i had to bail sorry mhairi, i like you and all but the dialogue in this book reads like you ran it through an ai generator. also there’s almost no plot to speak of, just a lot of characters making observations about things. genuinely amazed by how high its goodreads rating is.

The last 25% was really fast paced and I enjoyed it so for that part alone I’d say definitely read it. But just be prepared for a slow burn for the first 75%. There was even a few audible gasp moments in the last few bits - we all know I love an audible gasp!

Inhaled Jill Mansell's latest yesterday - The Wedding of the Year. I can imagine watching this farce on a TV. I would be laughing at the scumbag running down the street trying to outrun his wife - iykyk She also threw in a Romeo and Juliet scenario amongst other things.
I was expecting schmaltz but got the hilarious opposite. Would be good on screen.

My library don't charge fines, but they do now charge 20p per book that you reserve online.
I know 20p isn't much but does put me off reserving books now
