That's so true - I think when a book is hyped up my expectations are so much higher than if I know nothing before I start.Ah no! I was lucky in that I read it a while ago when there was zero hype and I knew nothing of it. I had zero expectations. It’s always such a different experience when approaching something that’s gotten rave reviews. You may have the same opinion either way of course, but there’s still some unavoidable cognitive bias.
I was told I would love Piranesi and I honestly could not have hated it more. It may have been beautifully written but it was just all such nonsense. I did not give a rit. Now, I am pretty sure I’d have been similarly unimpressed if I’d just stumbled upon it, but I’ll never know for sure! And I definitely wouldn’t have been so angry about it![]()
I also hated Piranesi, it was so depressing and boring.
