We're avoiding things we need to do by reading.

Or maybe thats just me 🙈
Oh I'm procrastinating by reading, I've read 7 books this month. Just not this one 🤣🙈 I always do this with book club books which is why I never join IRL ones. I'd combust in shame 💥 Maybe it's some silly psychological rebellion? But like very stupid because I WANT to read it 🫠

I finally finished TVS.

I think the idea of the storyline being told from the male gaze, who is retrospect, has romanticised their/his? (wasn't always sure if more that one person was narrating it) unobtainable teenage crush oblivious to the darkness in the girls lives.

But I absolutely hated the style. It felt like one big waffling breath. And this really made it a struggle.

I finally started TVD guys!! So far I'm enjoying the weird POV but I do wonder if I'll end up hating it since it's all about teen girls told from the male gaze. Like we need more of that, right?

Im going for this for my nomination. Hot Springs Drive.

Seven years ago, Theresa and Jackie meet in a maternity ward. Sleep-deprived new mothers; instant friends.

Then they become neighbours on Hot Springs Drive - a nice street in a nice neighbourhood, filled with flower boxes and emerald lawns.

The story ends like this: in the depths of a sweltering heatwave, Theresa discovers that her husband and Jackie are having an affair. The next day, Theresa's body is found.

The truth lies somewhere between the picket fences and pink blossoms, where friendships twist into tragic jealousies and barbecues hide bed hopping and bloodshed. By summer's end, the residents of Hot Springs Drive will never be the same...

An unputdownable, unmissable, vicious blade of a novel that peels back the fragile veneer of two suburban families and the deadly secrets roiling between them.

Deal: Hot Springs Drive: Absolutely unputdownable, pulse-pounding domestic noir https://amzn.eu/d/57cImXm

I'm really surprised at how long it has taken me to get through this book, especially as it's a re-read. Blaming my frankly insane menstrual cycle this month on my preference to doom scroll instead of reading.

One though that came to me is that I wonder if this book influenced the rise of sad girl literature. The major difference of course being TVS was written by a man but there are a lot of similar themes here. It's also intriguing to read about the male gaze with a degree of innocence on the boys part. I've just reached the night of the Suicides and the lines about how they never really knew the girls struck home like it never has before. The male gaze is based upon putting women on a pedestal, purely basing values on physical appearance. This is captured particularly well in the book I feel.

Sorry, I've been awake for a few hours and stuck in bed pondering 😆

Ok, finished TVD and I just don't get the hype. It's depressing, completely male-gazey, and what was the point? Did anyone who like it care to enlighten me?

I’m nominating First Lie Wins by Ashley Elston.

Everything she is about to tell them is a lie...

Evie Porter has everything a girl could want: a doting boyfriend, a house with a picket fence, a fun group of friends.

The only catch: Evie Porter doesn't exist.

First comes the identity. Once she's given a name and location by her employer, she learns everything there is to know about the town and the people in it.

Then the mark: Ryan Sumner.

The last piece of the puzzle is the job. For Evie, this job feels different. Ryan has gotten under her skin and she's started to picture another kind of life for herself - one where her boss doesn't pull the strings. But Evie can't make any mistakes. Because the one thing she's worked her entire life to keep clean, the one identity she could always go back to - her real identity - just walked right into this town. A woman, who looks just like her, has stolen her name - and she wants more. As Evie's past begins to catch up with her, can she stay one step ahead to save her future?

Neither did I. I read about two pages at the start of the month and thought ‘nope not in the mood’ and have never picked up since. The reviews coming in here haven’t helped 😂 I read it as a teen and loved it back then - however I don’t remember if I actually loved it or just said I did because it was a bit quirky and weird and fit with my angsty teen persona!
