Ooh so here’s a theory:
Saff, from a combination of grief and depression, is starting to behave more and more wildly. (The use of the S slur, the lives, the using of her followers from her daughter’s passing to market slave labour clothes.)
Ashley is well aware of this. His lack of support for Saf in the beginning is what I think accelerated her decline into this state.
However! Now that he’s calming down and not jogging round the globe or cycling through the Red Sea or whatever, and keeping his head down somewhat, she’s very much the more visible of the two, and is therefore going to build a bad reputation for herself much more apparently.
While keeping his head down, he removes the attention from himself, Saf makes herself look more and more desperate, until he can use it as a “justifiable” (in their followers’ eyes) reason to ditch her.
