Lidl was my choice of them when we lived in Spain but coming back to UK I find local Lidl quite grubby and Aldi is sparkling clean with far more choice.

Lidl app better than the M&S one for useful money off and actual free bakery items
I’m an Aldi girl. Our local one has self service checkouts and friendlier staff. Although I agree with the comments around the Lidl bakery and app.
Currently on hols so only Lidl close by, but this one does have self service so all good!!

I'm an Aldi girl over Lidl, but that's mainly due to laziness than anything else 
the Aldi is closer to me and has other food places I want to shop at near by, so that's where I go

The downside is that I end up purchasing from the bakery every week which isn’t good for the diet
I posted this on the M&S thread but after seeing a swarm of flies over the pain au chocolate in the Lidl bakery a few Saturdays back, im sworn off for life.
I knew I'd be throwing a cat among the pigeons pitting one against the other!
I'm sure it depends on your local stores and probably also as a PP said, which one you started with. My local Lidl is clean and tidy and has lovely fruit and veg. I love the bakery and the flowers and the shop is bright and well lit. I sometimes like making myself a bottle of freshly squeezed orange juice.
I also LOVE the app as it's always giving me free stuff.
The two Aldis I go to (in very different parts of the country) are dark, grubby, and seem just filled with insane American E-number filled crap.
Which my teenagers love but me not so much. I find it harder to find nice fresh appealing food there.
I know one major appeal of Aldi is its skincare but I'm not into that.
Loving the dodgy shop chat. I live in London and the only supermarket crime I have witnessed was a man putting a tartan tin of shortbread into his leather jacket in M&S many years ago.

I shop at both . ALDI staff annoy me chatting to each other through those earpiece things they wear , my Lidl lot are a really friendly bunch.
I prefer Lidl, I like their fresh fruit and veg and the bakery. Cleaning products, toiletries and wines are excellent too. I love the app and I like the layout of the stores.
Aldi has improved - but the queues at busy times are unreal, self checkout is ok so I use them but anything reduced needs a member of staff. Some of the staff do not interact at all, don't even look at you and act like you're an inconvenience

What I will say about both Aldi and Lidl is that they do seem to, in general, neglect their older stores in terms of both cleanliness/tidiness as well as good stock. And I think that makes a huge difference because it's rare to see a new Aldi and Lidl open up near each other - one seems to come when the other one in the area is quite run down.
My local Aldi opened about 3 years ago and it was truly fab when it did; putting Lidl to absolute shame (which was really dire and honestly filthy). Unfortunately I am already seeing a decline in stock in my local Aldi (we seem to get less of the good stuff!) and everything seems to be from the day it opened, meaning a lot of the carts, displays, floors are beginning to look a bit grubby and worn down. Another 5 years and it would begin to look like the Lidl it took all the trade from...

I think the fruit is better in Lidl than Aldi, my kids (like most) get through berries like they are going out of fashion & I have never had an issue with Lidl but I have in Aldi. I won’t buy fruit from there anymore & will only buy salad if I am using it in the next day or two.
This annoys me too - they do it in Tescos too!
One aspect of modern life that does my head in is staff having such a great time chatting with each other they are too busy to help you. It is rife these days, in cafes, shops, everywhere, and I find it so rude and unprofessional.
There are 4 Aldi and 3 Lidl near me. There’s a terrible Aldi, I’ve seen fights break out in it and there’s one that is cos-playing as a M&S. The Lidls are all ok. I know my way round Aldi better but would go in any of them before I’d set foot in Asda, Tesco or Morrisons.
Going to big supermarkets like asda is so exhausting, i never know where anything is and end up walking about a million steps trying to find stuff
I feel your exhaustion. If I go in one Morrisons entrance I have to walk the length of the store to get in and get a basket. Before the baskets were at the entrance and you could walk straight in and start shopping. I’m not a huge fan of either and I don’t think the prices are great anymore, but I prefer Aldi over Lidl. There’s not much I like in Lidl apart from their sparkling water, coleslaw, ground coffee and ice cream cones. 
I hate the Lidl app. Aldi’s tannoy is really annoying loud, it’s such an unpleasant shopping experience.
