Last weekend, my best friend got married. She gave me the bouquet because I was the only single person left at the wedding. I felt like such a failure. Everyone was loved up and everything seemed picture perfect. I felt so empty that evening. The next day however, half of the women had bags under their eyes because their husbands' snoring kept them awake and everyone was irritated because of their hangovers. As we left the venue most of the couples were bickering, and as I walked to the most expensive car in the parking lot (which happened to be mine) I realised that marriage isn't as great as some people make it out to be.I met my friends over the weekend (I’m the only single one in the group) and we’ve hit the point of babies/marriage etc.
To say I feel quite “behind” is an understatement - this is my own pressure btw and most days I don’t care but the odd time I do get down.
One of them has just had a baby & one also just had some minor surgery & the comments they just happened to throw in about their partners made me very glad that I am not dealing with that/in relationships like that. And I just think it’s really important to remind yourself when you’re beating yourself up/longing for a relationship is that many people in them, are not as happy as they’d like you to think they are or put up with things that aren’t great
Would it be amazing if I found my person and could get my own happily ever after? Yes, of course it would, but I don't want to forget about the amazing things I've already achieved on my own. I have a good career, a car that makes most men drool, lovely pets, I own a house, I have a king size bed I don't need to share with anyone and I have lovely friends. By connecting my self-worth to my relationship status, I am doing myself such a disservice. It almost feels like betrayal. So I took the bouquet back to my friend. I thanked her for wanting to give me the flowers, but that it felt unnecessarily painful to single me out like that (as we had discussed previously, it wasn't like I went rogue there), and I drove off into the sunset, thinking about the next prompts for my new Hinge profile. Mr. Right is more than welcome, but until then I'll be absolutely fine on my own
