Your accent

I'm from Hull and we have our very own unique breed of a Yorkshire accent which is just... something else.
I don't think my accent is very strong, and other people comment that I do have the accent but I don't sound as bad as others.
You really know a Hull accent when they pronounce "Phone" as "Fern" and we are notorious for saying "Nerr" instead of "No"
I got picked on at school for saying Lunch instead of Dinner so people thought I was posh
My partner is from Kent so his accent sticks out like a sore thumb here, his accent is not dissimilar to Essex, but I think it's a bit more mellow.
On the other end of the scale I had a friend who lived just outside of Hull her whole life, both parents were Scottish but I have no idea what to class her accent as at all. It's slightly posh, but there is no Hull or Scottish twang. I wouldn't even call it a Yorkshire accent. It's baffling.

My friend is from Hull and I love the way she says ‘a can of kerk’ (coke) her accent is fab!

I'm from the London suburbs (Live in Kent now) and I quite like my accent. It can vary from posh to "street" depending on the company and a few drinks . My family all have strong London accents though espcially my mother in law who is from Stepney. She sounds like she should work behind The Queen Vic.

Like others on this thread, I'm bloody fascinated by accents. My own is definitely native to my home place, but it's not particularly strong. I feel entirely neutral about it however, I do tend to code-switch a LOT. People who know me a long time can find it a bit odd if they hear me in code-switching mode, as if I'm deliberately altering my accent, but I genuinely can't help it. I've moved around a lot in the last 12 -15 years which is a big part of it, I think. Trying to fit in places.

I have a very broad Barnsley accent. I wouldn’t change it for anything. Brummie, Barnsley and Scottish accents are my favourites.
I would hate to have the typical yummy mummy accent - ie MOD. Worst accent going.

I LOVE the Barnsley accent! I also love all the same accents as you with northern Irish added in too

I’m from the south west and have a West Country accent which gets stronger the more drinks I have I’m not that bothered by it but other people like to point out that I sound like a farmer. My sons dad is a brummie and when he goes to stay with him he comes home with a west mids twang so will be interesting to see how his accent develops as he grows up.

My accent is meh. Grew up in south London and lived most of my adult life in East Kent. I sound very very “Thames estuary”. I miss an old London accent. All my grandparents lived (and died) in Lambeth and rarely do I hear that accent anymore unless it’s an old recording.

apparently mine is a sexy one (Bolton, ha!) I go uuup the sturs to brush me hure, plaaay ont plaaaasystation. Go t shop, and gerra buzz (get a bus) I also say the c word all the time without realising because when we say couldnt we actually say c’unt. I found that out reading my son’s spelling book, he had been taught to spell phonetically……..

I am from the Highlands and people can never tell where I am from... I often get Canada. I am always told too that I am the "least Scottish sounding Scottish person." Lol. I have since moved overseas and when I speak on the phone to my mum, I can totally hear her accent, and my accent doesn't sound like it. Quite funny.

I’m from Oxfordshire and moved to the West Country when I was 25... so everyone thinks I’m posh because I don’t have the accent but I’m not!

Apparently I can change my accent depending on who I am talking too. ( Husband or my own family) as they are not all from the same country and I currently live in the same country as my husband. The best bit is I don't even know I am doing it and apparently can change it instantly.

My accent is Northumbrian, people tend to think it's geordie, except for other geordies . I quite like it . We have our own dialect too.

Scottish/Glaswegian. I have my “phone voice” which is the toned down version for people from other places but the rest of the time when around other Weegies my accent is rough af and you probably wouldn’t understand a word

I don’t hate my accent but a lot of people point it out to me. I’m from Stoke and so people pick up on the little ways I say things like look and book. We also say things like duck, shug, conna and ayup orate! Which can be like a different language! I don’t hate my accent but I think it sounds kind of funny at times. But I love it at work when I hear another Stokie- makes me feel comfy and at home. If I could chose an accent to have it would probably be Southern Ireland or some sort of Italian accent I think. I wouldn’t chose Stokie!!

I’m from central Scotland and love my accent. Not weegie like most I have my telephone voice and normal voice.

I love that us Scots can have a conversation in slang and people from elsewhere have no idea what we’re saying.

Also enjoyed being told to ‘speak English’ by English customers when I worked in a call centre years ago

I live in South Yorkshire, so most people have a Yorkshire accent, but there are strong variations even between villages. In the town in South Yorks where I grow up, we say things like 'home' 'phone', 'coal' normally. Where I live now, a mere 2 miles down the road, they say 'fern' 'herm' 'kerl'. The absolute weirdos So all I hear about these days is 'kervid 19' and 'correrrnervirus'.
