Watched the filmed version of the Hope Mill production of Rent with Tom Francis and it was great. It's not a perfect show and is very of it's time. There are other things I would rather see.

I have a bit of a soft spot for Rent as saw it a few times on Broadway in the early 00s so it holds a certain nostalgia value. Would be delighted if Tom Francis would reprise his role as Roger in the West End production but not holding my breath.

Interesting question somewhere online today asking what musical, despite the score, has the most awful story.
Dear Evan Hansen, Carousel and Rent was mentioned multiple times.

love your thoughts ?

Carousel is a cluster of a musical. “He beats me but I love him” 😑

Dear Evan Hansen I cannot get on side with.

I love the music from Six but I hate the premise. They made Anne Boleyn look stupid when we know she likely wasn’t. And the fact little girls come out of that show wanting to be like “the pink one” picks me out so bad.

I have an irrational hatred of Heathers, but the songs are cool for the most part.

Yes I agree with Dear Evan Hansen, I really didn't like it! The storyline is obviously depressing given the theme but I don't think I (as a 40 odd year old woman) am the target audience. When I went to see it the rest of the audience were mostly younger people who seemed to be enjoying it. 🤷

We Will Rock You has cool songs and the worst story/script known to man.
There’s a particularly delightful piece in one of Stewart Lee’s books where he describes WWRY as “the worst musical I have ever seen” which “can only have been conceived in a moment of extreme cynicism” 😂

(He also had this lovely commentary on MT performers in general:

“All you can take away [from WWRY] is huge admiration for the way the cast do their best to make it work, confirmation that musical theatre performers, whether they love a show or hate it, remain the super-efficient, highly trained ninja-warriors of the stage.”

Even though it’s one of my faves (I love Meatloaf music) I’ll admit Bat Out of Hell has a very ropey storyline. And why is everyone so inexplicably horny all the time?

But, I still love it

aspects of love has it all, age gap, affair, incest
Went to see Aspects of Love at Hope Mill as was an Andrew Lloyd Webber musical I hadn't seen and love changes everything was everywhere when it was released but it has not aged well

I went into WWRY thinking how bad can it be? Queen have great songs, this musical has made a lot of money so people clearly like it...truly awful. I am quite tolerant of musicals but this was one I wish I hadn't bothered with.

Dear Evan Hansen was so hyped up when it came over here, I got an early preview ticket. I was left thinking 'is that it?!'

I will die on the hill that “we’re putting on a concert!” isn’t a plot and Six is no more musical theatre than when I saw a reformed 911 play a throw-back gig at my local park. Fun music, cool moves (they still back flip!) and we all understand the background.

it’s fun music but it is not a musical!

Moulin Rouge for me. I love seeing it, the performances, the energy, the songs (jukebox I know) but the story really is a bit ropey. Satine’s death seems so rushed & although there’s always people in tears around me, I have to stifle a giggle every single time

Awful as in rubbish writing (WWRY then, but the music saved it) or because the story covers grim and depressing themes? If the latter then Next To Normal takes the cake, they had about four different trigger warnings listed on posters around the theatre when I saw that! Utterly brilliant show though in spite of the themes!

Waitress advertising will tell you it's about a cute cake shop but in reality it is about someone trying to escape from an abusive relationship.

Let's be honest West Side Story is a romance sitting on top of gang warfare and numerous stabbings. And speaking of Carousel, well Oklahoma is really dark if the Judd Fry character is done right and properly sinister. Hell even Seven Brides for Seven Brothers they kidnap the women. Should I even mention Showboat?

I think there is a place for all different kind of musicals... Sat here chuckling because I actually enjoy most of the ones mentioned... Seen Six several times, not really a story to it is there but me and my daughter enjoy the songs! I actually loved WWRY but that's just because I love the music rather than the actual story line.... Dear Evan Hansen is one of my favs 🫣

But none of them hold a candle to the likes of Les Mis...

I mean West Side Story is a modern adaptation of Romeo & Juliet so your gonna have to blame Shakespeare for that one 😂.
