You only have to look at the story of Katie Allan to understand that some people shouldn’t be in prison. Even her 15yr old victim (who suffered a broken ankle) and his family asked for her to be spared prison. Driving ban/ community service/ curfew etc yes absolutely some punishment should have been giveUnfortunately the outcome for Katie was the absolute most tragic and I can only imagine how this must have affected her family and also the victim.
The thing that always gets me is how some people avoid a prison sentence when others seem to get excessive terms.

They will be among those released, it just doesn't make headlines because they are the kind of people who everyone assumes aren't in prison.

And no murderers are being released under this scheme.
Ok, but prisons obviously are full of dangerous people so releasing them will inevitably lead to more victims. Victims of rapist's and victims of assault.
I know it's not an easy problem to solve but I definitely think more prisons and officers are part of the solution and finding solutions to the problem of recruitment of suitable officers, specifically ex military instead of those fresh out of university.
Also as has been mentioned, people with mental illness are being held in prison as there is no care system for them. A whole host of people.
Inmates from was it Bulgaria? At one point, a large amount of them. Release and deport them and ban them from returning. All of that would be preferable to releasing dangerous criminals.

Prisoners who are in jail for serious violent offences with sentences of four years or more, as well as sex offenders, will not be released early under this scheme.

It will also exclude those convicted of domestic abuse and what the government calls "connected crimes", such as stalking offences and controlling or coercive behaviours.
Helps to read articles sometimes

You can't have a social democracy with one percent growth. You can take as many selfies as you want, but it ain't gonna change that fact.

In case it hasn't been mentioned, we have been doing this for a while and the one major change seems to be that it's a reduction of the % of time served:

The Conservatives released 10,000 prisoners early to ease the jail capacity crisis, according to figures released ahead of the new Labour government setting out more drastic steps to reduce the prison population.

Figures published by the Ministry of Justice on Friday revealed the number of prisoners let out between October 17 and June 30 under the End of Custody Supervised Licence scheme.

The ECSL scheme enabled certain prisoners to be released a maximum of 18 days prior to their release date. This expanded to 35 days in March and 70 days from May onwards.

The scheme applied to prisoners who had served at least 50 per cent of their sentence.
Justice secretary Shabana Mahmood is set to say on Friday that the government will go further and allow the release of some offenders who have served 40 per cent of their sentence, in an effort to free up capacity.

It's weird because I remember seeing the headlines at the time. Thought it was common knowledge.
