New thread for keeping up with the latest in UK politics

Since the start of the last thread we have a shiny new Labour government and we wait to see if they're an improvement on the last mob or not.

Conservatives are getting ready to elect a new leader, but I doubt that anybody much wants the job given they're out of power for the next five years or so.

He's a know but I kind of hope Robert Jenrick becomes leader of the Tories. Because 1) it would win me ~£90 and 2) it would lead to banter on my Facebook page because of where he's MP for.

I can’t wait to hear Labour respond to early criticisms of their policies to “it’s the Tories/your fault” because it simply is and they’ve inherited a very difficult job as a result

If the Tory government didn't close so many police stations then they could've taken up some of slack with their cell space. Over 600 were closed in England alone.

So.
Fartage has already gone back to GBeebies, and is now off to America to act as Trump’s fluffer.
Well done Clacton. 🙄

Watching C4 news....with comments from the US presidential candidates, about how the UK is now an islamist country! How rude, and offensive.

Id call it ridiculous hyperbole more than anything else.
I mean it’s so patently stupid ( if we were an Islamist country we’d be behind Pakistan and Iran ) that it’s giving it credence even to get offended by it.
JD Vance is a raving lunatic and I’m beginning to wonder if he’s actually more deranged and dangerous than Trump. A few years ago he was calling Trump America’s Hitler and now he’s his running mate.

Well this will come as a surprise to absolutely no one.
This is what the UK voted for though? Everyone knew Boris was a lazy self interested lying clown. And he's bumbled his way to massive riches scot free just like they all do.

If Darbyshire wants to point the finger specifically at the Conservative government, does she bother to go on to say what her beloved Labour would have done differently? Because as I remember things, not only did their MPs go along with all the covid votes in parliament, but in fact wanted more draconian lockdowns. Just as we saw in Wales where they attempted to totally close their borders, or have people like her conveniently forgotten half the tit like that that went on?

I mean criticise "the government" in general, as it certainly was a mess, but when she attempts to notch it up a bit to specifically target "the conservatives" she should expect some questions about the opposition behaviour too, and explain why they didn't oppose anything at the time. And the opposition at the time were absolutely not squeaky clean on respecting the travel and partying bans either were they?

And what would that achieve? Criticising a hypothetical situation?

Oh forget what actually happened, let's theorise on what might have happened 🤔

Starmer has done the right thing. You can’t have the tail waging the dog and he has shown, for people who didn’t believe that he is tough enough to keep the far left at bay. This isn’t about child poverty, it is about discipline in the Labour Party. Starmer made commitments in the election and is being true to his word. He would look weak and disingenuous if he didn’t stand by his commitments.

...I'm not sure about using child poverty to flex your political muscles. I'm sure there are other votes Starmer could have used as an opportunity to take a hard line on instead.

Wait, these people got the whip suspended for 6 months because they voted for something they believe in and presumably their constituents do to? I'm no fan of McDonnell, but well done mate. There might come a time when Sir Keir will need the likes of McDonnell.

Anyone else looking forward to Starmer's first QT today?

I hope Rishi grills him on immigration issues, as Keir kept on and on about how bad it was. Now he's PM he's unravelling plans already in place (Rwanda and Bibby, allowing yet more into our country and processing them faster). I'm all for processing faster, if this means they can work here, but I'd like to understand his conditions relating to those who don't meet criteria.

I also hope Rishi asks Keir to explain where all the additional builders, joiners, plasterers, plumbers, electricians, roofers, etc will come from, when even the CEO of the CITB reports we don't have enough to cope with the numbers Labour expect. By all means be ambitious but he needs to be realistic too.

Well, I'm looking forward to it insofar as it'll be his first PMQ's as PM, but we both know the whole thing is a pantomime. I'll mainly be looking out for who is on the front bench and what Angie is wearing ... 😬 Hopefully Farage won't be given a question, but given how pisspoor Hoyle is and how desperate he is to be seen to be 'fair' no doubt he'll get one.

Heh nice joke from Sunak about advice on winning getting a round of "awwwwwww" there.

He seems to be giving SNP and lib dem loons a disproportionate number of questions so far.
