Quite probably. My aunts older husband did the exact same thing.

I disagree that he’s ‘detached’ from his family. From my local knowledge of the family they were all very close, of course, Tom was always the ‘main character’. He’s also had the same close friends since his teens.

The problem is that although he’s emotionally close, he is detached in another way…because he’s had a lifestyle and public attention that is alien to the background he’s come from. The people he’s ’closest’ to…most haven’t left Plymouth and do boring 9-5 jobs and have ordinary worries. He’s lost a lot of his relatability with his family, but the intention is still there.

I do agree that Lance is possibly isolating him from family, even if it’s not an intentional plan. If the marriage ends, it puts Lance in a strong position to keep the kids in the USA as they are already in school there, and without Lance, does Tom have any life in the USA? Taking the kids to another continent has the potential to force Tom to stay in the marriage even if he doesn’t want to. That’s often what older partners do if they think there is a risk of being traded in for a younger model looming…they either make the younger partner feel they can’t cope without them, which isn’t likely with Tom as he was making his own money from such a young age, or they make it practically difficult to contemplate leaving due to complicated arrangements for the kids etc.

Does Tom have any fame in the USA? I thought he was just a UK fame-bleep, he’s a very small fish in a big pond in LA…I do think he gets more of the attention he craves in the UK.

Ive said this on this thread before but I have friends who were in Tom's year at 'Eggy' (Eggbuckland School) and the kids in his year were all quite hurt when accused of bullying. Dumbfounded, even; no memories of him being bullied - some 'ribbing' but by all accounts he was allowed to stay in a classroom at breaks and lunches with his special, chosen gang so no-one really knows who is supposed to have bullied him or when it happened.

In the 90s, Tom's aunty used to go to Estover Community college but was apparently bullied there and so she was moved to Eggbuckland.

I think he is known among gay guys due to 'cute twink in trunks' on social media, but no real fame. Hes also been around the Hollywood scene and at parties, which are questionable.

About the bullying it wouldn't surprise me if it was made up. Like mental health, bullying is a celebrity PR staple.

I did hear a few comments that he was offered the scholarship and made up the story about being bullied so it wouldn't look like he was ditching his old school and friends. Which doesn't make sense, to me, surely his friends would support him and his achievements - good one, Tom, keep in touch, meet you at the sundial on Saturday, have fun?

The private school is a 1min drive from where he used to train in Plymouth. So if training before or after school it would have been a lot more convenient. I was at Eggbuckland myself, bullying was rife…but I wasn’t given a private classroom for break times and I was never dropped and picked up from the door, as Tom would have been as his father at the time had given up work and was driving Tom around.

It wouldn’t surprise me if there was a bit of name-calling, but he was never in any kind of danger. He was the school’s star pupil and they would have been bending over backwards to keep him there as the school often got mentioned in his publicly.

I think he was eyeing up a scholarship…the private school do them for elite sports, and wanted to hurry up the process so claimed his sport was at risk due to bullying at school.

I’m predicting Tom will be desperate to be a Traitor (because they get more airtime), but that he won’t get chosen because he’s such a terrible actor.

Will be interesting to see him interact with Stephen Fry. Although Stephen has a penchant for much younger men, I really think Tom will irritate him. The airhead media bleep getting his kit off vibe isn’t likely to appeal.

I feel bad for saying this but..... there is something i actually want to come to his defense on.

People on reddit are slagging off the new show Tom will he hosting, A Game of Wool, without even seeing it because.... how dare they cast a young white man as the host as it is not diverse enough.


I feel like this is a bit silly and performative complaint tbh. He seems like an obvious choice as he has presenting skills ,a lot of people like him and the general public generally know that he enjoys knitting. 4 does actually want people to watch the show at the end of the day, and he will bring in the viewers.

I am not a knitter, but crafters have pointed out some of his work is messy and his jumpers are unshaped and box like.

I think it is fair to question his fitness to host on the basis of his skills, and the fact that he presents himself as an expert when making beginner like projects..... but it seems very silly just to say he shouldnt host because he is a white guy.
