Omg I’d go mad as well. I hate it as well cos it looks like you’re the strict parent and not the fun parent. Especially when your OH is like ‘mummy doesn’t like us having fun’ like I like having fun JUST NOT AT BEDTIME!!!!! 😅 bedtime is hard work enough without toddler getting all hyped up

Hi all, hope everyone is ok.

So i’m on holiday with my 2.5 year old and we are sharina bed (we NEVER share a bed at all, never have, at first I was so excited but now I’ve had enough) and two nights out of the week (we are here for 10) so far she’s been wide awake at 3am for hours. I wonder if I’m waking her up when I’m moving around. I could sleep in the living room but the sofa isn’t that comfy but she’s also started to wake up and wonder if I’m still there?? its only been the two nights and to say we don’t bed share I think we’ve done well😂

Also- should I try capping her nap if she’s up at 3am (maybe too much sleep?) I just don’t know what to do. We’re only here until Tuesday so not long to go till we are home.

Maybe it’s my own fault for letting her nap for over 2 hours yesterday 😪 we’ve had such busy days she was just exhausted and I think her bad mood yesterday evening was related to too much naptime.

Sorry for the somewhat disjointed post I am exhausted! She woke up at 3am last night and didn’t go to sleep until 5:30am, up at 8! 😧

also one think that’s come into my head is that she won’t smile for photos. Is this normal? She doesn’t smile on demand 😂
I don't have advice for the sleeping, but none of my kids will smile on demand 😂 nor look straight at the camera 😂

Hello all please can I get some advice? I've got myself in a bit of a state so I'm looking fo some kind of reassurance - if any. My little boy turned 2 in November and he is super sociable and outgoing, and such a cheeky little guy. He goes to nursery 2 times a week and I picked him up today and his nursery worker said "nothing to worry about, but I just wanted to let you know that he is struggling with transition with activities." She basically said that for example he will be playing lovely with other children on the floor and then they will say to him right, we're going to make cakes now and apparently he gets really upset and needs reassurance from them?
I have never really noticed this at home before, he has his usual 'tantrums' but all children are like that. I'm starting to blame myself now and wondering if it's my fault?! Also not sure what she was trying to get at and now I'm panicking that they think something is wrong with him. I think I am probably just making something out of nothing, but adding that into being a hormonal pregnant mess it's really not helping. If anyone has experienced this or has any knowledge I would really appreciate any advice. Thank you x

We definitely think part of it is frustration towards not being able to say what he wants, which is equally as frustrating for us, especially when we’re getting discharged by professionals and we can’t afford to go private to get him the help to speak.

It just seems to be if he doesn’t get his own way is what sets him off. I’ll hold my hands up and say we have spoilt him and he’s an only grandchild on both sides, so he’s very spoilt by them too, which doesn’t help. We have said to stop treats or giving into him but they don’t always listen. I feel awful for having to come to tattle to vent, when usually I’m just here for the gossip. I’ll specifically take him somewhere tomorrow and see if giving him the options help the situation. hopefully tomorrow will be a better day

Any advice on stopping a toddler from climbing into bed with us? He goes to bed absolutely fine and no fuss, but every single night without fail he will wake up and cry to get into mummy and daddy’s bed. Sometimes the fight to stop and settle isn’t worth it as we are so knackered so we just give in and let him get straight into our bed but it’s becoming tiresome now getting kicked in the head every night by a 2 y/o 🙃
Grit your teeth and don’t allow him in. Unfortunately it’s just the way you’ve got to do it. Every time he comes in, you take him back to his own bed. Even if that means you are literally walking back and forth from one room to the other. For as many nights as it takes. You have to break the cycle and the only way to do that is by consistently putting him back to his own bed without fault.

Also.. to add.. my daughter used to have the BIGGEST meltdowns, over small stuff. Terrible twos for sure, in the last 2 months I’ve really tried to get down to her level and get her to speak to me when she’s frustrated so rather than getting frustrated with her when she’s crying or shouting etc I will say “mummy can’t understand you when you are screaming, speak to mummy and tell me what you want” , it’s really effective and works. I follow this amazing lady on tik tok about gentle parenting and alot of her techniques really work on my child. I know it isn’t for everyone as every child is different but it’s helped SO much defuse lots of tantrums and we hardly have any.

Yeah this is what I do. Generally we are out the door for days out by 8am and can have lunch out too and back for 12, asleep for half 12. My friends who have kids who dropped naps at 2 all don’t get it. Why would I force my child to stay awake over lunch so we can do something when she’s tired. I’d rather be out the door early and have chilled afternoon!! Anyway I better shush on that cos it winds me up haha.
I am with you! My sister in law & brother never cared about their kids' naps, just let them sleep in the car or whatever (and complained the kids were all grumpy and badly behaved 🧐), and my own sister didn’t have children until I had 3, and they never got why I was always saying "no sorry, we can’t, that’s no time, we have to leave early' etc. Now my sister has her own kids she’s just like me 🤣

Anyone got any tips on hitting? My daughter 2 years + 3 months keeps hitting me. She only does it as in like a playing sense but sometimes it really hurts and I tell her she’s hurting mummy and we use nice hands / kind hands! I’m fed up of it 😡

Thank you everyone for your kind words 💕 I really hope it is just a phase she is going through. Daddy is more fun than me because I'm the one that does everything around the house as he works so much. So when he comes home he can just play. Whereas I've got tea to make, washing to sort out, lunches to get ready etc.

We've had a nice chat tonight and she said that she was just tired this morning when she was acting up so we've both agreed that we will try to be nicer and not take it out on each other when we're tired. And I'm going to try and make more of an effort to be more fun 🙈

Thank you ladies! All of above I’ve got on my list so think we’ll be ok, I just need to stop 😂 I literally said to myself don’t feel guilty for buying/asking for money towards farm/zoo/various memberships for him as I know he’ll enjoy that so much more than loads of toys (especially after Christmas) but you know when you just look at stuff and feel instant guilt 😂 we went so overboard for my eldest when he was 2 so really trying to reign it in!
for my little boys 2nd bday we’re going to get him a learning tower for the kitchen to start doing a lot of baking and cooking together! Not cheap but if you’ve got family willing to chip in that could be another good idea!

So glad to find this thread. I have searched to see if this has been asked about before but couldn’t see anything on it, which means it might just be me who’s a mug… my daughter is 2.5 and I still have to cuddle and rock her to sleep at night. I have to get her to sleep before she goes in the cot 99% of the time otherwise she just won’t go to sleep. I tried a few things when she was younger to try and get her to go to sleep independently but I just couldn’t take the crying so here we are.

Any advice or is anyone in the same boat?
What @Definitelyme said! Try a big bed. Pick out some new bedding, get her to pick out some special bits. Does she have a night light? Maybe get one that she has picked out. Does she sleep through the night? You probably have already tried it, but have you laid her down awake and if she cries, don’t talk, just lay her back down? Not sure if that’s the cry out method though, and I know people don’t like that? Does she still nap during the day? She maybe be overtired?

At my wits end with what to do with my daughter's sleep 😭 😭
We've tried everything and she takes at least an hour, if not longer to go to sleep at night. We've tried no nap at all, short nap (1hr), long naps (2hr plus), early bedtime, late bedtime, nothing makes a difference. It's always gone 8pm by the time she goes down. I wouldn't mind but she's up at 5.30/6 and clearly still shattered.
When we put her down just lays there chatting and singing, perfectly happily at first, then after about half hour or so she gets what I assume is overtired and starts to whine and cry.
It does my head in, my partner thinks I'm stressing over nothing but I can't relax until she's asleep.
We just put her in her cot and leave, there's no interaction from us once the lights are out and she's put to bed, so I doubt it's for attention. This has been going on for months.
Just don't know what to do anymore

Has anyone potty trained a nonverbal toddler before. My son is 3 and doesn’t say a right lot. I’ve tried the potty but he won’t entertain it and I can’t explain it cos he doesn’t understand

Does anyone else feel like their 3 year old prefers their other parent than them? Everything at the moment is Daddy and its getting me so down 😔
All of mine have always seemed to prefer dad. He's the fun one, he's not with them 24/7, but when they're under the weather or they need to release some tension its me they want because I'm their safe space and the constant. It's so horrible when they don't want you, but know she does but subconsciously she knows you're always there and if she needs you, she has you. If that makes sense?

Is there anything you did differently to bring on this progress? Mine was 2 in November and still only says Ga Da Ma Ba. He does only a few hours of nursery each week but I don’t know what I can do to help get just one word where he attributes it correctly. He understands me when I ask him things and so knows if I’m asking if he is hungry or wants water etc but has no desire to say anything other than his usual sounds.
Understanding is great, it means his receptive speech is coming along really well. Just keep talking to him and giving him chances to talk, even if it’s just his babble, which I’m sure you’re doing anyway. A few things I’ve learned over the years from SALT, if he has a sound for drink, for example, and makes it to ask for a drink, respond with the word like “Drink. You would like me to get you a drink, I can do that now.” Try not to ask too many questions for responses, instead sportscast what is happening, and use lots of descriptive words yourself eg instead of “let’s play with the cars” something like “let’s see if we can find the big yellow car and the tiny orange car to play with”.

YES THIS EXACTLY!!! My friends who’s kids are older said oh she will sleep in the car. Yes for all of 20 mins? How is that fair when she needs a proper rest to recharge. It’s only me that’s looking after her so why would I put myself through only letting her have a 20-30 min nap and she’s in a right mood all afternoon 🙃 they didn’t get why I do things in a morning. I’d purposely book our toddler groups as early as possible so we have time for lunch and naptime, that’s how my life runs. I can’t be a fluid parent who doesn’t have a clue how long they’ve slept for etc it would drive me insane. I love routine and my daughter thrives off it x

Does anyone else have a sleep talker? I googled it ... big mistake... and it can be a sign of stress. And also pretty normal. So now I'm obviously panicking over what my toddler could be stressing about!
I've talked in my sleep since being little, almost 30, still do it.
My apple watch picked me up having a conversation with a Richard one evening.
It can be totally normal, some of us just never know when to shut up😂

Good morning guys! Mini melon slept till 6.30 this morning so the Cheerios before bed seemed to work 😊 thanks so much nap police! X
I think all kids are different anyway and function off whatever schedule suits them. My 2.5 yo doesn’t nap anymore and wakes at 6 and is in bed asleep by 6 with no wake up for food just sometimes has sips of his water bottle next to his bed. He eats breakfast as soon as he wakes and generally snacks throughout the whole day until dinner at 4:30pm. He also hasn’t had milk since 15 months old and he’s very active but the 13 or 14 hrs he goes without food he seems to have no issues with.

But I’m glad you found a solution, can never go wrong with a bowl of cereal before bed! God I remember being a kid and that was my go to until my teens lol x
