And then the opposite is sleep paralysis, whereby your body’s natural paralysis state is still in play when you’ve actually woken up and are conscious.
Its only happened to me once and it’s very short lived but it’s horrendous.
I get this fairly regularly especially if I’m very tired. It’s horrible.

I found out from a doctor friend that until the advent of film if a person was shot they didn’t immediately drop to the floor (unless it’s a shotgun or huge bore gun) but we’ve been so indoctrinated by Hollywood movies that now the natural inclination if shot is to drop to your knees or fall over.

Another TIL - details of how lightning is formed!!
When there is low pressure, warm air rises. Water vapour is carried up in the cloud by strong internal winds. As this vapour gets higher, it freezes into ice particles. The higher they go, the colder and larger they get.

When they grow large enough, the ice particles are classed as hail which gets heavy enough it starts to fall. As it does, it bashes into the rising ice particles. This transfers electrons from the ice particles to the hail which makes it negatively charged and the ice positively charged. The negatively charged hail collects at the bottom of the cloud and positively charged ice particles at the top.

When there is enough at either side, there is a positive-negative attraction (think magnets), and the electrons rapidly move towards the positive atoms. When they find a path, this causes lightning! So thunderstorms have to contain hail and all hail comes from thunderstorms.

the negatively charged hail at the bottom of a cloud (again, like magnets) also repels the negatively charged atoms from the ground underneath it. The ground underneath a storm will be more positively charged than usual and this imbalance can cause a lightning strike.

It really is. I’m sure it only lasted for 10 seconds tops, but it felt so long at the time!

When it has happened with you, did you have any visual or auditory hallucinations? I didn’t but a seemingly predominant theme with people who experience this is of like a frightening character entering your room? Must be something to do with the fact that it mainly occurs when you wake up suddenly during the REM cycle. Friend of mine experienced that, and it sounded like a living nightmare!
I don’t remember having any hallucinations thankfully. Just a fear of wondering when I’ll be able to move again

Another thing I get is where I can actually move, I guess it may be similar to sleep walking, apart from I don't very often get up.
But it's apparently where your brain has half woken up so still hallucinating like a dream, but awake enough to still move about/speak.
I can see things, imagine scenarios going on ect.
I see animals/insects/snakes ect in my room, I can see my partner asleep next to me, mid trying to get them away, it's like my brain wakes up properly and I realise what I'm doing.

I remember when I was a teen and had 2 friends stay over, one who stayed over a lot.
And I was trying to open my bedroom door because I thought the dog wanted to come in. And I remember waking up mid trying to let the dog in to one friend asking what I was doing and the other replying "She does it all the time, don't worry"
I will often say random things and then realise when they reply that it's completely random.
I had another time I got up and put my bra under my pajamas because i thought there was a group of my partners friends in the living room.
I get this too! I don't sleepwalk but i will imagine scenarios like you. It's really weird but i'm glad it's not just me doing weird things in my sleep 😂

I have never sleepwalker but I'm terrified of people who do. When I was a teenager I had a friend who did and I almost let her walk (or most probably fall) down an outside staircase on a holiday as I was too scared to go near her, thankfully the door was locked so she couldn't get out but she was horrified I wouldn't have done anything 😂😂😂😂

Sorry to lower the tone and all but...

Today I learned that people are apparently putting The Ordinary Glycolic acid on their buttholes.

I went to a nature preserve yesterday where you can watch sea turtles come up to lay their eggs. The guide told us that whether a sea turtle’s egg is male or female depends entirely on the temperature of the sand. Cooler sand they come out male
