He is 5 months. He is good for a bit, I brush after a few brushes I reward whilst brushing, but then he'll just turn and bite. It can be hard to keep him still which makes it harder. When he went for a puppy groom they said he was good but not sure if they brushed him, I think it was a bath, dry, cut nails and trim a bit of fur.Of course, duhmy bad, sorry!
How old is he? My baby hated being brushed for about the first 6 months we had her but she loves it now. We would give her treats (or bits of her dry food as there's not much she can eat due to her sensitive tummy) while brushing but we'd stop when she'd try get away. I'm not sure how helpful that is, my dog is a lab so very good motivated but if yours isn't, maybe try playing tug with a toy while brushing?
He isn't that good motivated which does make it harder and he loves toys but again not enough to take his mind off what I'm doing.
I think what makes it worse is that I work with animals and he is partly a breed that was one of the most aggressive dogs I've seen, it was a rescue and I think that was mainly why for that dog and I've met others that are nice but that one always sticks in my head. So I just don't want him to turn out like that dog. My trainer said when he showed this behaviour for something else she wouldn't be worried due to his age, as puppies learn with their mouths and distract him so he doesn't form a habit but I'm still worried
.The things I'm thankful for: good off lead usually good recall (doing classes on this at the moment as well to make it better), good in his crate and no separation anxiety, although I get told he does because he gets upset if I leave the room or give him to someone however when left alone he is a perfect

I'm so tempted to send him to a residential dog training place for a short time. As I think it'll do him good to be away from me for longer than a day or two as I think he is just too attached, I was thinking of maybe sending him to boarding for a short time for this but may as well get training at the same time? Although I'm not sure I agree with them as I believe I should be the one that does the work
but I'd rather nip it in the bud now than be left with a bigger problem---
Also he keeps chasing one of my cats
the other he doesn't care about she just walks around stays on the floor near him, the other he won't let her! I just want the cat to stick up for herself she's bigger than him, just get your claws out and teach him a lesson

Yeah, I have to travel about 45 minutes to the place where I train. I would definitely be tempted to stick with the 6 minute drive too!Yeh I find it hard to remember which words I picked for commandsoh yes didn't think about that group classes would be good for being around other dogs/people. We can do about half a course so far.
Id like to do shoes eventually.
We have been doing it probably around 14 months but that included 8 months of nothing as the weather cancelled some over winter and then it took me months to find somewhere else to go as my old place were bad at replying. The old place seems to be posting more about agility so I think I'd go back there if needed. More so as it's a 20min drive away all the others I found were a lot more.
The one I go to now for private sessions is only 6 min drive though which is nice. I think she only does one group session and then privates for everyone else. I think the group is for people who are competing already.
I have someone on social media who went to my original group classes and she's just started to compete now (jumps/tunnels) but she has a collie who is easier to train and also didn't take a big break like me. My dog is stubborn and can be hard to focus, he is very independent. But when he is focused he is really good. He just got him comfortable (hopefully) with the dog walk, he loves the A frame, nearly there with weaves and we are going to start seesaw soon.
Do you ever go to any of the work shops people do? I don't think my dogs up to that yet but a friend who does it goes to them
No I've not been to any workshops. I kinda feel like what my instructor has to say is enough for us at the moment!
I find it hard not to compare myself to others as well. My dog also isn't a collie and there are people who started at the same time who are much better than us. In those times I have to remind myself that I'm doing this for fun and for my dog. We're never going to crufts and that's totally fine! As long as he's having a good time, that's my top priority!
@Bobby Chariot, oh my what a handsome boy, was he the last one you lost before you got your girl? I remember you saying you weren't sure about having another dog, but she is gorgeous!

Yeah, ask at the Vet or even a Pets at Home store, we've even found them helpful in the past.

I looked into the insurance for it but just a quick look as it's just a possible thing I might look into more but wasn't sure if it would be worth itYou need to be careful, you will probably need to take out Pet Insurance in case of injury to any dog in your care.
Also some Council areas require a dog walking business to obtain a license.

Me and my hubby was chatting earlier, we're old farts now, our boy will be our last collie xShe was my sister's dog originally, we dogsit her from the day she got her and I never wanted to return her. When she was about 6 months old my sister realised it wasn't the best idea getting another dog and she was ours. I've wanted a dog for years but it just didn't seem to happen and then she kinda fell in our laps, it sounds so cheesy but from the day we first dogsit her I felt like we were bonded. Almost like she was meant to be ours, can't imagine life without her now!
@Bobby Chariot I 100% agree, you're doing an amazing job and so happy she's getting the love and care she deserves
My last family dog was a border collie, he passed a few years ago and I still miss him - he was a great dog and I'd definitely get another Collie!

She's a Labrador and Google says "between 25 and 32 kilograms" so I guess she is overweight but she really doesn't look it and like I said we don't overfeed her at all especially since we're mindful of her not being able to walk too long so she'd naturally put more weight on anyway.
As much as I don't want to, I will reduce her food to what the vet said and see if that makes a difference but if she still gains weight I dunno what to do. I'm already overthinking it, if she keeps gaining weight when she shouldn't be she's got some kind of illness or disease and she's going to die. I know that's probably over the top and dramatic but I can't help it.
Honestly just feel like a massive failure and like the vet is judging me for being a terrible owner even though I know that's not the case... she's loved, cared for, walked, fed and spoiled (you wise, not food, haha). I just don't want to be one of those pet owners that let their pet get really fat and they can barely hold their body weight while standing... I know I'm not but I can't help overthinking it. Just very in my head about it tonight and needed a ramble.

They mentioned further imaging but at the following appointment they just said they're not sure and the best option for now is pain relief/YuMove and minimal walks and then they had the audacity to complain about her being 1kg overweight and said we need to stop giving her treats which we don't (we give her 1 bit of her food when praising her so not excessive) and it's not like she can go for long walks and run about for a few hours. Honestly feel like it was fate that we ended up with her as I have just as many health problems as she doesHave you stolen my dog or something? He sounds exactly the same as yours and even looks similar tooAre they going to investigate the hip problems any further? Ours has similar, they found it was caused by nerve pain. He's now on Gabapentin and it's made a huge difference, it's freed up his joints so much and he's much happier. No help with the barking though as mine is an absolute dickhead when it comes to that and will bark at everything at every opportunity
Honestly, it's bad enough when she barks at the neighbours but I think it's worse when she's barking at a random bit of polystyrene at 12.30amMy dog barks in the garden if he hears someone going past the fence (or thinks he does). We bring him straight inside if he does that. We’ve found that if we can preempt the barking we are able to distract him with a game of sniffing our treats or playing with the football whilst people go past. He’s an idiot though.

She hasn't barked since I mentioned this so she must have been reading over my shoulder, haha.
The only issue we have with it is that with the leash on, she then thinks she's going for a walk and will not go in the garden but I guess it'll just take time. She is still a baby after all!

Something that puts me off adopting a dog from a rescue is the contracts involved. I think if it's your dog you should be able to make decisions regarding it's health/euthanasia if appropriate. I've seen multiple times where owners have decided something to then get hate online for not giving the dog back to the rescue for them to help it. The rescue should be a back up if the owner wants it e.g. if owners situation change they can't afford treatment etc. But if the owner who lives with the dog and knows what the dogs been going through wants to make a decision they should be able to. The vets then also get hate for breaking the rescue contract even though it's nothing to do with them and the owner is the one that they have to listen to. It's like you never fully own the dog if you can't make decisions for it. Seen people online who hate on the vets as well saying they'll protest outside or if they can't they'll keep phoning which is stupid as it prevents actual emergencies from getting through and therefore they are potentially putting animals lives at risk...

She is still getting the MetaCalm liquid on her food until it runs out, then go to this monthly injection.
It seems popular as there were others in the vets getting it too.
Gosh 8 weeks, that's along time, what's he having done?Does anyone have any recommendations for good puzzles for dogs? I have two plus a licki bowl but I want to order some more for enrichment when my dog has surgery as the rest period will be 8 weeks minimum
