Hiii! I’m loving this thread and not totally unrelated, I signed up for my first marathon last night for the end of May 2021😳 I’ve been running probably for 5ish years but only really consistently in the last couple. I did a half marathon a couple of weeks a go in 2hr20mins so certainly not speedy. Any helpful links etc on where to start I would be very grateful xx

Exciting! Have you checked whether the race you're doing puts out training plans? Otherwise having a google for marathon training plans will work. If you have a garmin they've got some pretty good plans via garmin connect (on your computer).

Assuming that you marathon bock is 16 weeks (so starting in February) that gives you about 6 weeks to a) increase your mileage but also do some speed specific work. If that sounds like the right kind of timeline I'm happy to suggest some speed stuff for you.

@SpiceWeasel I haven't forgotten about you sorry, life is just CRAZY atm but I'll get it done soon!

Anyone running Christmas morning?

I really fancy it... but wondering if it would be daft. I usually run before the kids rise anyway, but equally they might get up early as they are excited and I don't want to delay their excitement as mummy has gone for a run 🤔
Yes 🙌 Iv always fancied the idea of a wee run Christmas Day 😊 so I made that my next goal to get me out running in winter 👍🏻

Yes the race has a couple of training plans on their website and I do have garmin. I’ll have a look at both properly thank you. Oh that would be amazing, thank you! I really feel like I’ve plateaued with my speed. Although in fairness I am guilty of just doing the same run over and over again🙈

Yes I'm going to run on Christmas morning! Easy for me though as we don't have kids and get up hours before everyone else so no one will even notice I'm gone 😂

I'm hoping to do a wee run Christmas morning! My brothers and I did it last year and although I'm with my other half's family this year I'm going to try and make it a tradition.

Thanks! Quite scared but excited haha! Yes it's the Edinburgh Marathon. It's meant to have the flattest route of any race in the country so recommended for first timers 👀

Ooh this was my first marathon too! Yes it’s pretty flat. My advice would be not to get carried away on the downhill bit at the start, it’s easy to run too fast! There’s also a pretty barren bit out towards the turnaround point where there aren’t many spectators - so maybe make sure you have some headphones and music for that bit. Oooh and take some spare clothes if you are getting the bus back cos it takes ages and I was sat there in my sweaty gear forever!
Enjoy it! Edinburgh is such a lovely city 🥰

Are any of you running any virtual races [5 or 10K]? I've never been in a race before and would love to try it but don't really know what happens!

Virtual runner is great for these. You just need to upload evidence of your run.

They are very motivational.

I’m doing a virtual festive 5k in the week before Christmas and New Year - I’ve never done virtual before but it’s for charity and you get a medal which is a nice touch! I can’t imagine I’ll be fast as I’m still doing couch to 10K but i thought it would be fun to push myself to keep going in the in between time.

I’ve just finished week 4 of couch to 10K which included 5 minute run blocks - eeeek - and actually I can do it, 4.5k done today (a mix of running and walking!) Looking forward to week 5 and the 6 minute + blocks.

Yeeeo! Well done! It's SO good when you start doing those longer blocks and realise that you can! You won't even notice those additional minutes you know :)

I found a virtual one and was considering it 😬

I've been doing the Zen Labs C210K and today went for what I think was my best run. To be clear, I'm an over weight person that drinks and smokes too much [love an oul vice], but this run was just that rare type where it didn't feel like an effort! It was 17m x 3 and 5 minutes walking either side. The app is rit and stopped working mid way so I was running and try to do the maths [sports AND maths - ma least favourites combined], but today I got to over 9K and just felt DELIGHTED!

Also, I absolutely did not want to go out. But it's the reminding yourself - you always feel better when you go, and that feels better than the guilt when you don't.

I have the 10K runner app - it has a yellow logo. I had to pay for a lifetime membership but it was only about £8 I thought. It’s good and doesn’t cut out!

I’m looking forward to getting even further and really enjoying slowly but steadily increasing and improving.

Must look for that app as the Zen Labs one is balls. Cheers for the tip!

You really will be improving and you won't even notice. I know at the start we all concentrate on getting it done, but it's such positive incremental progress. Report back on your next run!

Anyone know how important it is to mix up your run route? I think this may be what's stopping me progressing.

I like to swap mine up a bit - when I have more time I drive to my local bigger park areas to trot around (I only have roads within walking distance from me) but I quite like the same route to compare how good or bad I am doing!
