i did spend a lot of money😣 I initially went with a more neutral shoe (Adidas ultra boost) but they weren’t right for me. Then I went to a running shop to get fitted and they recommended me the Hoka Ones, they cost me just as much as the Adidas ones but were an even worse fit which is why I’m not so keen on spending lots on a 3rd pair😭 I’ll check out the ones you suggested though, thankyou!

I’ve tried a couple of different running socks and they do help up to a point but when it gets to the longer distances that’s when the blisters start. Can you recommend any good ones?
I've never gotten a blister and routinely run half marathons and have trained and run for one full
I like the steigen no show ones because I prefer a thinner sock material. Cotton is a bad material for socks and make sure they're sweat wicking. Where are you getting the blisters?

Delighted to stumble across this thread! Took up running during lockdown and I'm hooked. Out of interest, I'm wondering if some of you could help or give me advice. I'm 29, 5ft 2 and 128 pounds. Wear an Apple Watch and resting heart rate is around 64 bpm. Have been analysing my most recent runs and max HR hits 185+. I seem to be spending a lot of my runs in HR zones 4 and 5. Not sure if this is something to be concerned about? A friend told me that I shouldn't really be running in HR zones 4 and 5.
Have you also checked your heart rate whilst running to see if it actually is getting that high. I'm sure an Apple Watch is pretty reliable, but best to check properly.

I think 185 does seem quite high though. For your age it should be 191, but not sure how accurate that calculation is (220-age). @nbx512 do you know if its a real thing? Or a random thing someone made up in the 60s like the 10000 steps 😂

Are any of you running any virtual races [5 or 10K]? I've never been in a race before and would love to try it but don't really know what happens!

Ooooh - found you!

Got directed here from the Diet thread as I've been bitching about stuff and they're probably bored of me already and they said you were the experts.

Has anybody got some recommendations for neutral (as they're going to have orthotics in them in the end), cushioned but not too cushioned, vaguely firm, deep heel cupped, men's running shoes that don't look frankly ridiculous on a fat, middle aged bird who would rather be anywhere than being seen to be exercising in public. And preferably for less than a week's wages? Plus suitable off the shelf Amazon orthotics to keep me going until I have the fancy schmancy customs?

Context: Psoriatic Arthritis particularly targeting entheses/tendons (right hip tendinosis exacerbated by slipping on water into a full side split on the rear leg - my entire thigh slammed down on the ground and something went POP, original hospital said 'it's your age, dear - have you considered losing some weight?'), SI joint dysfunction for 18 months afterwards, finally clicked loose about 3 months ago, frequent complainer of plantar fasciitis, posterior tibial tendon inflammation, shinsplints, etc). Hypermobile/EDS III. And an MRI last week showing intermetatarsal bursitis. Or, in short, I'm a bloody wreck from at least the waist down. I'm fat, too.

My Podiatry appointment for custom orthotics is sometime in late April, assuming the Plague calms down a bit and my current Adidas 'those will do' aren't up to the job of actually going anywhere. I have absolutely no intention of moving faster than my current 18 minute mile in the immediate future, but the Podiatrist told me over the phone when he was giving me the good news that I haven't actually fractured any metatarsals from working for a living that, in the meantime, I should get some 'Proper Good Running Shoes' (his expertise is feet, not grammatically pleasing sentences, apparently).

As you can probably tell, I'd rather be in the gym. But until Plague fucks off, if I can't find something that helps, I'm stuck indoors with lacrosse balls, therabands and foam roller and continually decreasing base levels of fitness.

Now I've stopped grumbling, I'm open to the possibility of going back to running at some point in the future, but right now, even C25K would result in yet more damage. Hence the need for running shoes that will take orthotics. And I'm off to reading the rest of this thread....

(PS: I know I need to be seen in a proper running shop - but they aren't open and I hated my last pair of Brooks with a passion).

Got a few friends trying to convince me to do an Ultra but I value my feet too much to bother 😂 #respectthefeet
I was talked into an ultra. I've never forgiven my friends for it. It was horrible.

A friend said he was talked into doing a 70 mile ultra and his friend offered to do it with him - his friend pulled out and my friend had to do it by himself. But I can't get my friend to guide me at a parkrun (I'm visually impaired and need a guide to run safely) because its too hilly.

I face planted the pavement for the first time in a year this morning at the half way point of my run. Sat and cried for a minute through shock more than anything and was going to keep running but then when I got up my knee felt sore (have a nice lump and graze on it) so decided to walk home.

Not 100% if that's the right thing to have done because I feel guilty for not finishing the run 😂 and embarrassed as school run mums checked on me haha.

Going to see how the knee is tomorrow before deciding to have a rest day or not!
Oh no 🤦‍♀️ hope your ok 👍🏻

Just wondered if anyone else finds they put on weight when they first start running? This has happened to me before so I'm not letting it get me down but last week I ran 25km as well as walking 45 mins most evenings, eaten well, only drank water or herbal tea apart from coffee with milk in the AM, and I've gained 2lbs this week!

I've read about it online and the reasons why are very conflicting - anyone know the proper reason or had the same thing happened to them?

Oh that sounds great thanks I’m only half an hour from Warrington so I’ll look into that xx
I’m like 50 mins/an hour away so got there in plenty of time to find somewhere to park but there’s actually a huge multi storey so wasn’t a problem. Think it was 11am start x

I need some running gear advice please!!! As it’s getting a lot colder I don’t really know what to wear whilst running. I get hot VERY, VERY quickly. I usually go out in running leggings and a tshirt but I can feel the effects of this in my chest with it being quite sore post run. Not to mention people look at me as though I’m insane haha. I’m concerned about wearing a sweater and getting far too hot and having to take it off and getting out of stride. Does anyone have advice. Is it on to go out in just a tshirt due to the fact I heat up quickly or can anyone recommend a good long sleeve that I won’t over heat in?
I wear leggings a long sleeve top and jacket which is zipped at the front so you can slide it off easily. I also have gloves which fit in my jacket pocket if i take them off and a hat/headband. My top is from my protein and is a nice material and I never feel too hot!

I haven't tried Mizuno. I tend to get a different brand of shoe every time as the type I like are always discontinued. I've found that quality varies even within brands quite a lot. I've had the best luck with New Balance so far.

Any other parkrun tourists on this thread?

Hi all, just checking in with everyone.

I'm planning on going out today on a 5km, but since I felt so sick doing it on Thursday I'm mentally putting it off. Honestly I long for the time I can just 'do' 5km without it feeling like a huge effort. Maybe that won't ever happen!

Have signed up to a virtual run in Feb so need to get my arse in gear really.
Good luck! I'm sure you'll smash it (but don't beat yourself up if it's not as good as you'd like 😊)

I was so glad to see this thread but then I saw everyones times and goals and immediately felt like a potato 😂
I go through phases with running. At the moment
I can do between 5-7k but I am SO slow! My pace is usually somewhere between 7:25-7:44 per km. I used to be able to run at a 6:15 pace so not sure what happened there as I’ve never trained this regularly before so I really thought I would
be improving.
I’d rather be able to do a slow 7k than a faster 5k! I find it really hard to break the 5k mark tbh, once I hit that it’s a mental barrier. You’re doing really well!

Hi all! It's my first time posting on this thread and I just wanted to say I have been slowly working my way up to running more this past year, and I've just signed up for my first half marathon! It's 6 months from now in October, and I'm so excited to start training for it :) Happy to see a running thread on here!!
Oxford???

hi everyone!
I have just started running doing the couch to 5k but feel I would benefit from some better suited trainers. I have looked at the Nike Infinity React and the Nike Pegasus, both recommend by friends. Does anyone have any experience in either of these? Any pros/cons to either?

@nbx512 is spot on re the recovery pace, also running by time is a good tip too. Although I swear it sometimes makes the time go slower haha.

Did you say you are using an Apple Watch? Wrist hr (which I think someone said above) is quite shit sometimes and can pick up your cadence instead of HR, also am sure mine doesn’t work as well when I have cold hands cos it can’t pick up your pulse as easily? It’s slightly less scientific but some people recommend using RPE (relative perceived exertion )instead, which is what I defer to when I don’t like the look of what my watch is telling me 😂😂

side note, I miss parkrun so much, literally find it so hard to make myself try as much when I’m on my own (and also get out of bed for 9am on a sat)
Yeah I am on Apple Watch. I'd never really thought about HR before apart from obviously it not being worryingly high. I did feel better today and not like I was pushing it to the very maximum.

Omg I miss it so much too! Can't wait until it's back on. I love trying to beat the previous week's time.
