Well had my first run in weeks yesterday whoop whoopfelt really good
done not to bad either only felt I needed to stop and walk a couple of times
I was absolutely buzzing all day yesterday thinking iv turned a corner regarding my lack of motivation.
Well that was short livedwoke up this morning with a sore lower back
it has the feeling of when you get a stiff neck but it’s in your lower back, does anyone have any recommendations? Iv put voltarol on plus googled a few exercises and stretches that iv been doing, but certain ways I move it feels as if it will completely go. Thanks

Pace is EVERYTHING! Although I'm on 5 minute runs, I definitely wouldn't call them runs! It does get easier and it's quite amazing how quickly your body adapts - 4 weeks ago I was out of puff going up the stairsThat’s really helpful thank you. I’m trying to do a very slow jog rather than the proper run I was doing before but need to find something in the middle as I think I’m a bit bunched up and tight (if that makes sense). I’ll definitely try and move on to week 2.
Thanks - I have spent a lot of today browsing and kept coming back to Asics - just taken the plunge and ordered some that are suitable for outdoor running. Hope to have them by the weekend and ready for week 525 minutes is my next run. I have done 20 so hopefully I can make the next step.
Trainer wise I use ASICS. They are sturdy and comfortable but to be honest as long as they are a running trainer they should be fine whatever brand. Just a shame you can’t try them on in lockdown.
That’s a good run! A run that you felt didn’t go well still went infinitely better than the run that didn’t happen at all! XxNot a good run today. Legs felt like lead. Had to stop a couple of times to catch my breath. Forced myself to 4.8km, but couldn't do more.![]()
MeI’m not sure how many of you are road runners? I have to run on them due to injury and poor footpaths around my area. I do it completely safely and in addition to this I live in a village so the roads are 30mph. Do any of you end up on the receiving end me of abusive motorists who take real exception to it?
I try to change mine up. Some days I’ll run on grass, some on road, some days I’ll do a hilly route, other days a super flat one.Anyone know how important it is to mix up your run route? I think this may be what's stopping me progressing.
I’m like that, I run the same lap of where I live but I’m like ooh which way round will I go today, this could change everythingIv ran the same route since I took up running in March, when I go my run I’ll turn left but sometimes I’ll spice it up and turn right![]()
Gimme flat any dayI live in such a flat area so there are not many hills without driving to them - so I must confess this was more of a bridge crossing a road than a hill BUT it was an incline so it counts right?
I would like to run more hills so I can hate them too - but I cant justify driving to some given the lockdown situation!
Yes, yes me too! I used to live in the gym pretty much before lockdown and then when they reopened I remember on that first day sitting there with a ball of anxiety in stomach thinking whether or not I should go. I did go, and to be honest it was fine, but I realised I’d not actually missed the gym all that much and had enjoyed being outside exercising because I’d also done load of walking in lockdown.@Gym&Tonic 100%when we started coming out of the first lockdown and sports facilities opened up I started feeling a bit anxious at the thought of being in doors, I received an email to reactivate my membership but I declined and continued with my running, I’m praying I can continue through the winter months
Awesome job!I love my bum bag for running. I would be lost without it.
Feeling really happy with myself. I’ve comfortable passed my 2mile barrier. My pace is soooo slow. Managing about 2.2 miles in 30 mins but it’s a huge achievement for me. Really want to be able to nail a 5k by the end of jan but not sure I’ll be able to as I can only run twice a week due to injury![]()
They didthe 2nd day of Race to the King, not sure where you're located but it's a race to WinchesterOrthotics. Orthotics and decent shoes, not squishy, soft ones with no support.
I did it years ago and it was horrendous - steroid injections, more ice than Greenland, lacrosse ball, spiky ball under the foot, swearing and silently weeping when stuck standing up for the bus, you get the idea - it eventually went away when I wore a removable cast that immobilised the entire foot for about 12 weeks (in daylight hours).
Basically, the pain is caused by the stretchy band of connective tissue between heel and midfoot tearing in multiple places when it's placed under load, such as when your foot first touches the floor in the morning on when you're standing/walking/running - like an old rubber band being overstretched. If you don't do anything to protect it when it's repeatedly loaded, the slightly stiffer bits where it's healed up will tear again and find it harder to heal up next time.
Having orthotics (because there is a good chance that your foot is falling inwards as it takes your weight with each step) stops the overstretching/tearing and ensures that you have a healthier gait - oh, and if you've had PI, you're biomechanically at risk of shin splints, bunions and all manner of nasties, so the orthotics help prevent those as well by making you upright on your feet/ankles/knees/hips/pelvis/spine/etc.
Customs cost a lot or you have to wait a million years for the NHS to consider them - perhaps some £20-odd ones from Amazon for arch support and stability could give you an idea of how much they can help?

I'm nearly excited today - I've just ordered a pair of Asics trail shoes, as my Ons are wearing out on the inside lining, I've done so many miles in them. Unfortunately, I've ordered them online rather than getting fitted and giving money to an independent instead of the foulness that is Sports Direct, but Asics reckon they have a similar fit/width to the Ons, so I've gone for them in a full size larger than my normal shoes (to fit my orthotics in and let my feet spread freely).
Had to go for a plain black pair as the awesome green ones weren't in stock, but using the orthotics meant I could go for neutral shoes instead of the heavy and inflexible stability shoes this time, which technically saves me enough money to be able to buy yet another pair after Christmas.
And I've got a fleece lined beanie on the way, which will be very welcome - didn't get one with a headlight, but might do that if I start running more before and after work, rather than in the comfort and boringness that is the gym at the weekend.
Going to be muddling through with random long sleeved tops rather than proper base layers for the next few weeks, but if I lose a bit more weight, I'll have more of a choice - the question is then, do I get a waterproof jacket or a gilet, which might be more comfortable?
I'd love to be able to do an ultra - there's lots of walking involved - and food. Just as long as there's no pavement pounding, I'm a lot happier doing greater distances far, far more slowly.
Maybe one day...
I want to finish because I never thought I would be able to do it! Was so happy on Monday when I finished week 7Thank you for this. I'm going to head out tomorrow and see how wellI do without pushing myself. Gutted to have got that far and had to stop! But determined to complete the program (mainly because my partner thought I would give up and raised an eyebrow when I bought off road running shoes....I will prove him wrong)
