4.5 wool, year round - if it gets really cold I add a hot water bottle, used to add a blanket as well but have had problems with my knee which mean that I get very uncomfortable if the covers are too heavy. It's lovely to see other single duvet fans here, I always feel weirdly defensive about this. We switched to having two single duvets on a double bed some years ago when I was having chemo and night sweats and have never gone back to double duvet - my partner has a 10.5 feather duvet year round plus one of those M&S fleecy blankets. (I find changing the bed linen much less of an effort with singles.) (The wool duvet is machine washable/line dry, the feather one visits the dry cleaner)

We discovered the single duvet thing almost accidentally when we had to move into my parents for a few months and slept in the grandkids twin beds pushed together. Game changer. I believe it's common in continental Europe as well.

I agree people often find it weird, but I'm baffled as to why. Don't knock it til you've tried it!

Duvet covers have to be 100% cotton, none of this bobbly, flame igniting polywhatever.

I have to have 100% cotton because of my husbands skin allergies. M&S really pissed me off recently as I bought a 100% cotton duvet set but had to take it back because when I noticed it didn't feel right. I washed it and out it on the bed and straight away my husband noticed it was irritating him. I looked closely at the label and it had some sort of stay new/easy iron technology added and it basically felt like it could have been polyester.

I tend to buy a lot of brushed cotton because they don't seem to mess with that.

I have been influenced to splurge on wool pillows (have been considering this for some time) as given the amount of time I spend in bed, I think it's a worthwhile investment. I've seen complaints about 'shrinkflation' and poor quality standards (notably multi-pack knickers) and definitely think that applies to pillows. I'm also still miffed about having recently had to replace a John Lewis mattress after 5 years. The product description for it now states that it is not recommended ’for regular use', pretty sure that wasn't there when I bought it originally - was hyper-vigilant about the new one.

All your talk about wool has got me thinking…

Honestly wool has been amazing for me. I find it drapes over you better so you don’t have any annoying gaps around your shoulders for cold air to get in. I was sceptical and they’re fairly expensive so I bought mine from the Wool Room as they do a 30 day trial. I waited till they had a sale on but I’d save and buy them full price if I had to now!

I use the same duvet year round. I think it's a 4.5tog. Husband and I have separate single duvets in a double bed. No duvet hogging
I wash my duvet about once a month, it just goes in the wash with the cover on (nb. the cover gets washed more frequently)

I saw a pillow in IKEA recently for £60!!!! The front of it was blue - some sort of inbuilt cooling pad....

My husband uses one with a cooling pad like that. Not IKEA though I think it was from Amazon for about £30. He loves it but it’s way too firm for me! I have a goose feather pillow from Julian Charles which is really comfortable.

It's one of those things you forget about until bedtime, and just ergh to that happening. Instead I type out how I should go do it now, but, yet, I do not.

Genuinely baffled by how anyone can sleep under 10.5 tog in summer! In fact any time past about April! I am only slim, feel the cold (hands and feet usually cold) and sleep alone and I would be melting under 10.5 tog

I could possibly shed some light on this. I'm severely anemic; my body doesn't have enough red blood cells to provide oxygen to organs making it harder for my body to generate, store, and spread heat. When I'm out in the sun, I feel warm and I sweat but the second I'm in the shade (or it's night time), BAM.. I'm freezing again.

It's literally all my own fault too! I'm a vegetarian but I hate vegetables (lol) and I always forget to take iron supplements.

Not exactly a duvet q but does anyone have any mattress recommendations? Affordable but comfy please was gonna get an Emma but after seeing the reviews I think not

Feather and black. Stayed in a holiday let and the mattress was so good I had to strip the bed, see what brand it was and buy it immediately!.

Do you have different togs for different times of the year?

I have a 10.5 I use all year round. Not warm enough in the winter and too hot in the summer.

I have a 10.5 all year round with a bedspread on top.

Bedspreads are a game changer, the perfect hot weather blanket, and then an extra layer of toastiness in winter..

The things we stumble across on tattle when things on the TV are shite eh??

We have a feather duvet that poppers together so we can have wafer thin in the summer, medium or super fluffy and warm in the colder months.

I like pure cotton ( mainly white ) covers, the higher thread count the better . . Currently have a white cotton with bumble bees embroidered on it.

Im an inside out and grab the corners girl when it comes to changing it ..

Much prefer the look of my freshly made bed when its sporting the super fluffy duvet, it fills the duvet nicely and is just nicer to look at, especially when my scatter cushions are on and the blanket/throw is properly placed!!

Ooh a housekeeping thread , I like. I change my duvet cover once a week in the summer and sometimes my pillow cases twice depending on how sweaty I am . Attractive. Same for the kids beds, once a week. In winter, every two weeks. I have a summer duvet cover on at the moment, it’s a seersucker cotton bought in the John Lewis sale. It was a bargain and does not require ironing which is another plus.
mad for the actual duvet, I have a super warm one for winter and at the moment I am using a summer ( can’t remember what tog) one. I too am of the I side out school of putting your duvet cover on. I feel very grown up/old commenting on a duvet thread .

It's been excellent weather for line drying, and I even managed to rotate the mattress and put on clean bedding, and then I had a restorative lie down with a bag of crisps. Sometimes I make regrettable choices.

I have made the bed, it was hot, but smelt lovely. I'm missing a pillow case, too hot to investigate this. I have many pillows, I'll survive!

Gotta say with the kindest of sentiments that eating crisps on a freshly made bed? You're a heathen.

I keep an eye here for sales - have only bought bed linen, but that's always been excellent and the customer service is good. I would love to hear what the really expensive John Lewis emperor size winter weight down duvet is like though!

4.5 all year round, blanket on top in winter.
Soft sinking in pillows, i hate firm neck pain causing pillows.
Duvet is an old JL feathers one I've had for 20 years.
Duvet covers have to be 100% cotton, none of this bobbly, flame igniting polywhatever.

@dinosaursideways I've got a spare bed but it's not used enough to warrant replacing so I top the mattress with a spare duvet I have and it give it that padding to make it comfortable enough to sleep well.

@jordishaw 'and poor quality standards (notably multi-pack knickers)' don't get me started on knickers, my Next one's used to be my go to purchases for cotton multis. But now they are absolute pants, the elastic waists have fallen apart in less than a year.
