How long have you been on the sertraline? They do cause drowsiness, but that’s a very low dose. Are they working otherwise?
This is my 2nd week on them. Ive had pretty much ALL the side effects though so Im not gonna rule out things changing just yet. I think 50 is just what they start you on? I have a follow up next week but i dunno what to expect from a higher dose.

Is sertraline the most prescribed anti depressant in the UK. So many I know take it including close family members. Curious that’s all.

I can't remember if it was this thread or the support one that someone suggested a text helpline. If you don't respond do they hound you to check you're ok or is it up to you. I have anxiety when it comes to texting strangers or phone calls

Hi all. Not sure if this is the right place so apologies if not. I have a very good friend who has been diagnosed with depression, it’s been well over 2 years, different meds, counselling etc.. nothing seems to be helping or working. I never expected a quick fix, but some improvement maybe. Following an incident at work a few weeks ago, there was an outburst, which set off a chain reaction to the point where we were all pretty shocked. But ever since, I’ve been completely ghosted, by this person that is genuinely my best friend. The incident had nothing to do with me (just to add). But I don’t really know where to go from here. Do I keep trying, do I give space, do I just make this person aware that I’m there for them regardless and will wait until they’re ready? I’m not one to give up on someone when they need me most. I’ve never suffered from depression, although I’ve been to some very dark places but I just don’t know what to do in terms of support for my friend. I want to help but how do you help someone who won’t even talk to you? Am I fighting a losing battle? Or is this something that happens. Sorry for the long rant x
I would keep trying if you weren't involved in whatever happened. Your friend might be embarassed and feeling pretty bad about themselves. I've always appreciated it when my friends have made the effort for me even though I know it's not always that easy.

If you don't want to badger, just say that, and that you're their friend and care and will be there when they're ready to talk. But I'd still check in periodically, it can be really hard to reach out when you're in headspace.

You sound like a lovely friend.

I've been on antidepressants for about a week or so and I am extremely emotionally blunted. I want to cry, I feel it coming but no tears. I'm really struggling with this. I feel so indifferent to everything right now. I've been on all sorts of medication for my mental health since I was 17 but I've never really felt like this. Does it get better?
I looked up Mirtazapine, and it looks like it can take 4-6 weeks to work. So you may find things change a bit in the next few weeks as you adjust? https://www.nhs.uk/medicines/mirtazapine/

But I have found some ADs left me more 'numb' than others. I cried much less than normal when I was on Venlafaxine - I only realised after I went off it and suddenly was crying at sad adverts etc 😅

I get paid a lot for the stress i endure. An agency wouldnt come close and i have bills to pay... uhhh
Really? that's surprising as there's agencies for all professions and very high level jobs now. What about applying for anything that will cover the bills etc just to get out then?

Personally I think it's normal to have low days and moments even when you've been doing well. For me it comes up more with periods. So it might be worthwhile tracking that too and seeing if it coincidences. I'm much more tired and I get more suicidal thoughts just before.

I have booked my first appointment with a counsellor today.
For almost a year I have been crying whenever I'm alone but not wanting to reach out as I don't feel I have any real problems to warrant such sadness. Hoping this is the start of something good.
Any advice on preparing for my first session would be appreciated 😊
Just read this, hope it went well .

Oh that is tough. Is there a person in your life you trust that you could talk to? or your GP? If it's do-able, maybe cut back on the alcohol to begin with? I guess I'm thinking it would be wise to remove the circumstances that lead to self-harm, if that makes sense?
I don’t really have anyone I know personally I could talk too. I did try my uni’s counselling service but I just didn’t click with the counsellor, although it did feel good to get some things off my chest. I still live at home and don’t want my parents to find out so am not sure how to go about getting help from my GP. I have considered going to the doctor about a different issue so I guess I could say it’s about that. Whenever I drink it’s never the intention to get this drunk and end feeling so low but it often ends up that way. I don’t tend to drink more than once a fortnight anyway so I’ve never thought of it as an issue but it does seem to be what’s hampering my ability to move away from self harm so I am definitely going to try and move away from it.

Nah it’s fine. They’re young and entitled to share and be happy about these things. I’m just old and grumpy and over it all because I was there once and know it doesn’t always last. It’s not fair of me to spoil their thunder. I was just having a moan! It doesn’t actually really bother me greatly.

Re the period thing, it is possible. A lot of things can disturb your hormonal equilibrium. How long have you been on them? I’m sure they’ll settle down. ❤
Oh I see. And I’ve been taking my meds since May, but it took them about a month to kick in so my previous period was okay. Thank you 💕

Does anyone else experience a weird sensation in their feet? Kind of like pins and needles but not. It's really frustrating.
I’ve never had that but it sounds annoying. I was thinking about things that help with anxiety, your post reminded me about the physical symptoms of it. It’s worth speaking to your doctor about it (if you’ve not already, sorry this is so obvious). I used to take Propranolol which helps with the physical effects of anxiety. Keeping my fingers crossed you, I know it’s a nightmare but it can get better x

Hi everyone, I've never posted on this thread before. I've suffered depression since I was a teen, I was diagnosed with BPD a few years back. I go on very big highs and major lows. Mainly lows. Especially when I've had a good day. I can laugh and laugh and laugh and still come home and feel empty inside. I feel so empty at the moment, like there is just nothing inside me. I just feel like lying down and crying. Idk why.
I think you've already got the answer BPD + the depression is exhausting.

Have you tried DBT? They also have workbooks on amazon where you can learn the skills on your own.

Whenever I used to get drunk I’d get the urge to self harm. Now I get the urge to pierce myself, which is basically just self harm but I get a piercing out of it. I’ve given myself two piercings that I like but keep trying to give myself more, despite not wanting any and basically just sticking the needle through and pulling it out again because I don’t like it. I’m not really sure what to do about it.

Triggers? Absolutely!
It's a well-trodden path to go down where you know all the twists and turns and exactly what's going to happen. It's shit, isn't it?

Sorry to butt in as this wasn't aimed at me but I've been in a similiar position

I was on sertraline which I didn't agree with and now I'm on fluoxetine, which after the wave of side effects has really sorted me out. I now get bad sleep once or twice a week instead of every single night
Butt in any time. I’m glad you’ve found something that helps. ❤

Im so meh today. I cant bring myself to do anything. I have so much housework to do and I am just exhausted mentally. I've had a lot on, had to return to the office and my friends have been their typical selfish selves leaving me out. I want to not be bothered, but I am.
