The cottage will be permanently in a state of renovation. That's why the Pethericks don't touch it when he's away. It's vlog material, an actual project he can pretend to work on. When he gets the staircase money, he'll spend months looking for the "perfect staircase" instead of going to a local firm like anyone else, because he's artistic and has refined sensibilities. Every bit of the derelict heap will have to be done to his standards and be beautiful and artisan made and so "Beatrix Potter". He'll be in Madrid or Colombia or wherever the latest party scene is, as he needs to rest. Its all too much for him, poor lamb. The cottage is his only justification for begging.
