Journée Défense et Citoyenneté is one day of "military service" which Ryan would have needed to complete if he wanted French citizenship but he couldn't be arsed.

BTW, Macron introduced four-week Service national universel in France starting this year for all 16 to 25-year-olds.

It's not a "military day" but a "civic service" day.
It's been established to replace the national Military Service suppressed by Chirac in 1997. In 2002, one day of Civic service has been organised for the conscripts, girls and boys aged 18. It was a day to learn about the French Republic, its values, the French institutions etc etc.
Macron is trying to reinstall a sort of military service for girls and boys. For a longer time and in "boarding schools".

Thank you. As this was only a day, I wonder why Ryan decided it was too much effort for him to complete? Maybe just that he's not the smartest knife in the block?

They wear an uniform, they do physical exercices, they learn about the French Republic etc etc. For 4 weeks.

They are accommodated in a "caserne" (boarding school) with professional militaries and do some military stuff.

Ah and they sing the Marseillaise.

Macron wants these young citizens to learn social cohesion and respect the French Republic.

All that....

PS : Macron didn't do his Military Service in his time.....

Ryan said in the video that back then he thought he would never need the French citizenship. (Hello Brexit!) He also literally said that he couldn't be bothered to do the one day of required civil service when he was 16. So yeah, you're right - Ryan isn't the sharpest tool in the shed.
