So normally you're issued a fixed penalty notice if caught for minor offences, having no insurance is quite serious and can carry heavy penalties/fines. The prosecutor can decide to take you to court, it's entirely up to them. In England/Wales it is normally the DVLA who prosecute for such offences as no insurance, not registering the vehicle etc. *unless you are actually caught driving by the police. You'd be sent a notice of impending prosecution and normally asked to enter a plea - guilty or not guilty.

Failure to give info to the police carries more weight. The case will go to court and be judged in your absence. That is normally when points/a fine is issued. If the court feels the offence is more serious, it can be adjourned and then you will get a summons to appear in court. Failure to do so can result in a warrant for your arrest and you would be sent letters informing you of what had taken place in your absence.

P.S I haven't watched big Vag Vav stories to see what she's on about, but some of the comments on here don't seem to ring true 🤔 unless of course things are done differently in Scotland
What didn’t ring true? Other posters have commented saying similar things have happened to them or people they know and two police officers have also commented

It's not bragging. The offence would be classed as historical, so no you couldn't access it. You'd have to request the info directly from the convicting court.

And you don't "do" traffic offences, what a load of rubbish. Either you work within the area, like my FIL did for over 30 years, or you don't.

Which division do you work in?
Yes it can be accessed on a number of police systems, and also on court ones. Feel free to ask your father in law, however systems may have been updated since he retired but I can access historical offences but I need a policing reason to do so.

Of course not all police officers deal with traffic offences, there are many specialist departments where officers won’t stop a car in years. I was on one for 13 years.
