Since 2014 I’ve bounced in and out of Slimming World. In the past I’ve tried Cambridge (just milkshakes and misery) and most recently tried Team RH.
I appreciate Richie from Team RH. His approach is great. However, he can rant at me to weigh everything to the gram until he’s blue in the face but when I’m stood at the kitchen counter at 7a.m weighing coffee granules, I really start to question if it’s all worth it. My answer was no. Calorie counting is not for me. Neither is weighing myself every day even though I understand why he asks you to do it. I have the type of personality that is prone to becoming quite obsessive about things and I could see that this wasn’t cutting it for my mental health. Sitting at my mother-in-law’s dinner table on Easter Sunday, having palpitations because I can’t accurately weigh carrots and roast potatoes to the gram... 🙄 I realise that this is just me and not their plan, but I also realise that I cannot be the only person who is likely to become obsessed and have it take over their life.
He will bash SW for calling certain foods ‘syns’ whilst simultaneously calling certain foods ‘shite’...🤷🏻‍♀️
Every plan has it’s flaws, I guess.
I’ve returned to SW. I’ve sacked off my old IG that followed all the accounts promoting chocolate laden porridge. I’m going to read the books and follow the plan that they have written. The podcast is a good shout. The qualified nutritionists that have been featured on the show have cleared up a few things about SW that I was never too happy about. I agree that it still has it’s flaws, but ultimately, as someone stated above, it’s about using your common sense and understanding that the accountability starts and ends with you. Stacking a mound of SW chips on a plate with a WW wrap
pizza and having the three measly pieces of mushroom on your pizza count as your 1/3 of a plate isn’t going to get you anywhere. It’s fine once every so often but if you’re looking to shift some weight that’s just not going to do the trick. I agree with all of you about the instahuns and their warped versions of Slimming World. It doesn’t do SW any favours not addressing it all.
Anyway, having been through the thread, if anyone has any further worthwhile Instagram suggestions of genuine Slimming World accounts I would love to have a look. Even if your suggestion is yourself just write a little list of ones you like and include yourself in it. Nobody will ever know. 👍🏻

Not the Insta lot but I’m in a load of SW related Facebook groups I just lurk on, does anyone else sit there pissing themselves at the people who post a pic of something in the group usually beige/breadcrumbed/battered/frozen asking if anyone knows the syn value when it’s quite clearly going to be very high then when they’re told they’re like ‘oH nO dId’Nt ThInK ThEy’D bE tHaT mUcH’ 😂🤦‍♀️

Fruit is high in a natural sugar called fructose, which is fine until you realise this by blending, mashing or cooking ... Fructose is a high energy sugar which passes across the cell wall of the small intestine far too fast. The absorption of fructose in this speedy way causes a blood sugar level spike (you get lots of energy in one boost) the problem is it depletes quickly too and causes a blood sugar dip, thus making you feel hungry again, so you eat. Whilst you eat your pancreas detects a dip in blood sugar and releases a hormone called 'glucagon' ... Glucagon then travels to the liver to unlock another hormone called glycogen which converts to glucose in the blood thus giving you energy. The problem with this happening is you have already consumed new calories and your body works to break those down and the new glucose is then stored as fat on the body for the next blood sugar dip, thus resulting in over indulgence of calories.

Also with fruit being a high carbohydrate food, the chewing action of the mouth and the release of glucose and fructose stimulates an enzyme called salivary amylase, this enzyme starts to break down long molecules of sugar into simpler forms of sugar (thus carbohydrate digestion starts in the mouth) also the detection of sugar molecules in the mouth causes a signal to be sent to the brain ' and so your appetite cut off kicks in once your body has sufficient nutrients, when you blend or mash, the fruit leaves the mouth to quickly and thus the appetite suppressant action of the salivary amylase does not kick in, and so you can potentially over indulge in calories.
If you eat fruit in normal quantities then there is no issue. Its the free/speed mentality which means they have to have these silly rules.

The Insta brigade would be having 3 smoothies a day with a whipped cream and party ring topping otherwise. SW having absolutely no restrictions on quantity is why they have these rules as you'd struggle to eat that much fruit.

When I did attend group people would speak at image therapy and have eaten a whole punnet of grapes in front of the TV because 'they're a free food' rather than have had 1 chocolate bar or a biscuit. I cant imagine on any other eating plan where you'd eat than many grapes in one go.

Im on the PON FB group mainly for the outrageous posts and someone posted at the weekend they were thinking of going from SW to CC and wanted to know if free food and speed foods had calories. Was a serious post too!!!

I’ve had to unfollow this lass as she is just pure urgh 😂 how she gets all these dates is beyond me; she must act completely different from IG in real life. This poor bloke got stuck at work as they were due to go a date together and she thinks it’s ok to spout off about how she’s planned her day around the date which is fair enough ‘but it’s not ok but it’s ok’ cos it’s not his fault. She thinks she’s got it covered by hiding from them on Instagram but they can use a made up profile and follow her (I have several for personal and work). I’m sure her son and prospective partners would be mortified about her language and the way she goes on... anyway I’ve unfollowed and rant over 😂 edit she has done well with the weight loss which was why I followed her!
She looks like Janice Battersby from Coronation Streeet

Talking about people at target, SW Gem has kept it off but she does seem to eat proper meals which arent beige monstrosities and she does a lot of activity 🌱🌿

Mummy and Daddy Wright used to have some horrific meals. More so the husband, I remember 4 and 5 eggs at a time as well as loads of other things on the plate. Such disordered eating, I dont know many people who are not doing SW that would eat 5 fried eggs in 1 sitting.

I got to target with SW twice (lost 5 stone the first time and 3 stone the second) but its not sustainable for me long term. Hence why Ive gained some back.

Having to choose between oats or whole meal bread or having to 'syn' one. The principal is ok but hedging your whole week on that one step on the scales was mentally soul destroying for me. It got to the point where I'd only eat carbs for the 3 days following weigh in then the 3 days prior Id not eat any. Id stop drinking at 2pm for 5.30 weigh in. It was a horrible binge/purge cycle. I also did weigh my rice/pasta to a portion and would not be able to mention it at group or Id get jumped on.

Im losing weight slowly now and have had to work really hard on the mental side of my eating to recover from SW.

I think seeing people on Insta drawing a line and all the off plan / on plan just made me think it was fine to be doing all of that.

So cutting out dairy only since Monday has been interesting, the sore throat and headaches I've been plagued with have disappeared. It could just be coincidental but tbh it has made me think I was going through a lot of dairy every day doing Slimming world with the 2 x healthy extra As plus having a lot of yoghurt/cottage cheese etc. It has left me wondering if I should carry on as a member or not, being pescatarian cuts out a lot of SW 'Free' food anyway but not having dairy just makes it more difficult as I keep finding recipes but then they'll all involve quark, yoghurt, fromage frais etc. I like the accountability but I just think I'll find it really hard to follow properly!

Yesterday I was really busy with work and didn't have time to think about SW at all - I added up the calories of what I had at the end of the day and it worked out about 1500 - was weird though it would have all been pretty high syn but I didn't think about food at all yesterday except when I was hungry. SW I think about food constantly, planning every single day's food and having stuff for the sake of it just to use up syns. Hmm 😂
This was how I finally shifted the pounds after 15 years of food obsession and yo-yo dieting. I suffered secretly with Bulimia and binge eating for YEARS since childhood. Name a plan and I’d done it - largely in recent years driven by instahuns. I stopped following any plan and just ate exactly why I fancied, when I wanted it but always asked myself whether it tasted as good as I thought it was/ was worth the calories, if I was actually hungry etc often high calorie food doesn’t taste that great after a while and I would stop eating stuff after a few bites whereas before I would have finished it through obligation. I feel free for the first time in my life and despite having two children under 4 currently and working full time in a demanding role am at my healthiest in terms of my body image and weight.

I would implore anyone reading this to step away from whatever ‘plan’ you are following and have faith that you can go it alone - I was a classic person who loved the structure of a plan and loved the ‘starting afresh feeling’ however always fell into the same traps, got hungry, gave into temptation, thought ‘chuck today in the fuck it bucket’ and start again tomorrow. This gets draining and starts to effect how you socialise etc. I would write off a whole day because of drinks in the evening, or cancel plans out of fear of going off plan to end up just binging at home alone instead. The diet industry is evil in my opinion and creates more problems than it solves.

Believe in yourself and go it alone - begin to love food again and take back control of your life rather than it being dictated by ‘Margaret’ the group leader who has her own fucked up view of food. Reliance on a marketised plan can’t continue for the rest of your life, you are just being played by the advertising.

Sorry.... bit passionate on this topic 😂

Oh let us not forget topchefnavarros_sw where every square cm of plate needs to be covered in beige food. Not that they ever use actual plates mind it’s usually a plank of wood 😂

Does anyone follow Claire Louise O’Hara? She used to be a slimming world account, she still posts syns etc but mentions calories now like the rest of them. She’s a great Mum to her little boy but she’s irritating. She posted the other week asking people to keep swiping up on her affiliate links so her and her little boy can continue having a great life! Erm, no get a full time job love. She doesn’t irritate me as much as some but she’s annoying 😂. She’s done well with her weight loss though
