My elderly parents love it too as do their friends. I can’t bear it either and I don’t know anyone my age that does. My theory is that Mrs Brown Boys with its carry on humour, man in drag (think Dick Emery, Danny LaRue) is humour the older generation are familiar with from the 70’s. I think the reason it took awhile from engagement to marriage was because she converted which lasts 1-2 years, had a baby as well as both of them working.
