3 seasons of scientology the aftermath. Then louis theroux has one and then theres another called scientology going clear. (I'd recommend the 2 documentaries n then the aftermath shows)

How on earth the likes of Tom Cruise and John Travolta got mixed up with these bunch on loonies really baffles me.

I’d imagine it’s partly that people get involved when they’re relatively unknown and then once they get famous the Church has so much dirt on them that it’s impossible for them to disentangle themselves without risking everything. I did also once read an article somewhere that one of the reasons celebrities like Scientology is that, unlike most religions that say we’re all equal, Scientology teaches very clearly that there are different levels of human achievement and some people are most definitely ‘better’ than others. That (and the ego massage that goes with it) appeals to a lot of celebrities. The ‘celebrity’ experience in Scientology is generally very different from that of ordinary people, someone like Tom Cruise isn’t cleaning toilets and working for nothing, he’s literally treated like a God. So when celebrities cone out in support of Scientology it’s probably part fear, part ego and a big dollop of not really experiencing the worst of the organisation.

I’ve seen lots of Scientology stuff on TikTok recently, young, good looking trendy people trying to make it sound fun and interesting. Obviously the PR machine going into overdrive. Then I came across a former member’s content on there today warning people not to be fooled by their “off the cuff” videos saying everything will be heavily scripted and carefully constructed, and citing her experiences of abuse and degradation before she escaped.

Yes, would the very fact that people had to try their damnedest to escape from this load of crock not be enough to tell these people something?

The ones I do feel sorry for are the children who are born into it and know no better, they know nothing else. They're so indoctrinated they're warned not to google anything to do with this 'religion' as it's a high sin, and they'll be punished severely for doing so. And they obey.

I also re-watched Louis Theroux's 'My Scientology Movie'. It seems even (some of) the police are either under their spell or at the very least, intimidated by them. Louis stopped off on a public road - at one of their gatehouse thingies outside their premises - to drop off a letter addressed to David Miscavige, and was threatened with the police ... as they said he was trespassing. The police duly arrived and one officer said he thought 'they' owned this road & that road and advised Louis & crew to move on. Turned out it was a public road after all. Why didn't the cops do their homework before turning up?

Anyway. This documentary featured yet another escapee - Mark (Marty) Rathbun who had previously been a very eager member of the church - one of Miscavige's henchmen, in fact - who was more than willing to use his fists on anyone who didn't toe the line. Unlike the escapees featured in all of the other Scientology documentaries I've watched, Rathbun came over (to me, anyway) as a very unlikeable person and I found myself losing sympathy with him quite early on in the programme.

In one scene, while driving, Louis attempted a bit of humour by saying to Rathbun: We're going to see another disgraced, embittered ex Scientologist who was also thrown out for misbehaviour. Obviously a tongue-in-cheek remark, but Rathbun huffed and challenged him for 'speaking to him the same way they did'. Then there was another scene whereby Rathbun took even more offence at something Louis said.

I couldn't make my mind up as to whether he was maybe on the spectrum, or had been so badly indoctrinated it still affected his life, or he was just the sort of person who was on the defensive all the time.

But everything is so creepy - they hide things in plain sight like a tutoring academy for children that indoctrinates them.

I’ve read both Leah remi and jenna miscavages books and I can honestly see why it took so long for them to get out. It’s not a case of simply getting up and leaving. It took jenna years and years! Even when she knew things were wrong. And even when she decided to leave things were made so difficult for her. If he has Shelly in the mountains somewhere hidden away she doesn’t stand a chance of getting away from him and it.

Miscavige has definitely got that Hitler vibe going on. I've tried to reach leah before, id love her to do something in the uk but we are probably very small fish n those running it over here wouldnt be as hateful as miscavige, I dont think they'd be as abusive altho I could be very wrong with that!

one thing all these cults have in common is the rule that devotees are not allowed to question anything or use critical thinking skills. Obviously any influences from the “outside” are restricted or heavily monitored. I feel for the kids too, separated from their parents, indoctrinated and brought up by a collection of other people.

I remember seeing the LT documentary and felt the same way about Rathbun. He used to happily beat people up for Miscavige, I think he is a severely damaged human being with a ton of trauma (like most who escape), I tried to find some sympathy for him but it was hard.

I live near Saint Hill, it’s huge and they put on lots of free events like fireworks shows etc which I think are a rouse to get people in. I’ve never been but the temple is impressive from the road side.

You would not know we lived in the Uk hub for it, though there is a rumour that Tom Cruise has a house here.

An associate of my dad told me his dad set up the temple here and was big in the Scientology world. Have no idea how true that was as he started recommended courses to me and I didn’t want to get involved!

Lawrence Wrights book Going Clear and also the film of the same name are excellent, a real definitive look at the cult. I didn’t rate the Louis Theroux one at all, it was a strange concept, I thought. I can’t remember the name but the BBC one that John Sweeney did was also very good/scary as hell!

Yes Louis' one is a bit odd with the reconstructions, that's all I really remember of it. It's funny, I've always classed myself as a really big Louis fan but have found myself being more critical of him on here!

Just watched Leah Remini's documentary on how & why she left this 'church'. Chilling stuff, indeed. Well worth a watch.

Leah interviewed an ex female member (who'd also managed to escape the clutches of Scientology) who said her 12 year-old son had sex with a 40 year-old woman while a member of this so-called church. Parents & children are separated, btw, and aren't allowed to have any communication, so parents have no idea what's happening to their kids. I think they're allowed so many hours communication per year.

The documentary was made in 2016 I think, don't know how long it took to be aired. But if true, this is rape and should be thoroughly investigated. How on earth is this cult (my own description, because that's what I believe it to be) being allowed to continue without proper investigation in supposedly civilised nations?

Just watching the members (Sea Orgs) on that documentary parading back & forth to classes, etc, as though in a trance, reminded me of of that film The Stepford Wives - although these people aren't actors, they're unfortunately real, much more scary, and far more dangerous.

Yeah Hubbard owned a mansion there which is still owned by Scientology today and acts as its UK headquarters.

There's also a museum there.
