She has met Rupaul although I assume Rupaul saying that is the equivalent of everyone being ID'd for booze in Sainsbury's and believing it's genuine.

I have just found this thread (& site tbh) via a friend (who i incidentally met on GTL) and had to join! Just wanted to pop in & say you’re all doing sterling work & I’m trying to read every post. I left GTL right after Sali started using #povface while having photos up of her claw-foot bath and a few of us suggested it was in poor taste when, you know, there are actual poor people in the group. Then she had a spat with a friend of mine on twitter over some Whistles playsuits & went on a mass search of her name (not her @) & blocking anyone known to my pal! Fucking bonkers. Imagine purporting to be so busy & important & all the while searching your name on twitter.

That does sound normal and supportive @DinnerDog. Think it's just the fact that she said "most authors" as though they are a special breed and the only people who buy their friends books.

There's every chance I'm going too deep with the mistrust of Sali but her most recent IG post about Peter Lindbergh. She said she had his Vogue cover (and many others, of course) on her wall growing up. The Vogue cover is from January 1990.

She was born in 1975 and was therefore 15 in 1990. Is that not when she became "homeless"? I wonder which walls she was adorning with all these posters.

I’ve followed Orr’s writing for years, I’ve never seen her play the victim, and her feminist journalism is outstanding. Will Self is a cunt, he has always been a cunt, his writing proves he is a misogynist even if his actions do not (they do tho).
Yep there’s two sides to every story and I’m very much on Deborah Orr’s side.

Hello all, am a lurker until now! Very pleased to discover this thread as the Guardian column and the constant best things to buy has bothered me for a long time.

This current article about a make up workshop for school age children has tipped me over the edge! So here I am....
The article is extra disingenuous - particularly the images of clowns?! I don’t think that’s what MAC have in mind...

Re. New writer for that column, I completely agree. Having spent years in the Reddit make up and skincare communities I feel so sad that most people default to these ‘icons’ of the beauty industry to distil their wisdom. And it’s all, always about which products to buy.

I’d really like to contribute somewhere with the things I’ve learnt from plenty of reading, experimenting and also from my professional life but then I look around at the people who do it and think 💭 ‘thank goodness there isn’t a public record of how vain I can be and thank goodness my life doesn’t revolve around it!!!’ The forums like this one and reddit are so informative because it’s a conversation between many people with different skin types and levels of knowledge and aims, etc.

I think the guardian is missing a trick because sali is not on brand for them and there are a wealth of options. As usual they lack imagination and plod along - reactive to the comments (ie deleting) but not being strong enough to offer a different approach or maybe an alternative in addition.

The industry is highly, highly suspect in my view. I think sali wants to be part of it for the glamour but isn’t wise enough to just own it and say ‘yeah I know it’s flawed but I love it!’ Instead she has this faux-concerned and forced integrity vibe going on which is frankly aggressive.

Sorry for the extra long post 🙃 I have been reading this conversation and I find you all to be so fair and smart and balanced. It’s been a joy!

I was looking up a recommendation from years ago on GTL and came across this from Sali from 2012. Bear in mind whilst reading that this is the woman who supports other women 100%.

'Anybody else held a longtime fantasy of a bare knuckle fight between the Boden models and the Toast models? Like a really violent fist fight with weapons between the smug, self-satisfied, frigid, alpha mum bitches in their hotchpotch flimby flamby maxi skirts and hokey cokey boyfwend cardigans, and the fey, humourless, earnest, maudlin-faced cows from Toast...'

Frigid bitches and cows. Nice.

Never posted in here before, but used to love Sali then following her on Instagram just annoyed me. She comes across so fake woke, she seems like a real white saviour and the discoverer of LGBT. I don't know if that makes sense, but like she's doing WOC a favour by having them at her events or by going to gay pride.

I get the impression she's actually massively Tory deep down but doesn't want to be so pretends to be a bit of a socialist, but would benefit and be happy at the benefit of right wing politics.

Kerry Hudson would presumably see through her tall tales in a heartbeat. It made me laugh when she and Caitlin Moran were in one of those Twitter conversations boasting about how poor their childhoods were, and Sali said that people criticising them “wouldn’t last a minute where I grew up”. I googled it, and one of the first things that came up was the place’s entry into a best kept village competition. Yeah, sounds hardcore.

Brighton Pride today, aka National Sali Day, self-appointed spokesperson for all the gays (as long as they’re men). Because what Pride is all about is straight women commandeering it like it’s a terrible hen party, and making it all about them.
Sali is the quintessential stereotypical “fake white feminist”. Her “feminism” and her allyship are confined to groups and causes that will look good on her insta stories and are trendy right now.

I dunno - if somebody had taken a photo for the gram at my dad’s funeral I probably would be typing this from prison 🤷‍♀️

Presumably neither Hughes or Knight have the wit to consider the possibility that some of the adult women involved in that world were once abused children. Tends to be how that pattern gets started - not exactly an unknown fact. Another vile pile-on by that lot.

Yeah definitely although I must be disciplined about that rabbit hole 😂. It was an interesting derail for sure! And it’s SH-adjacent as it looks like she might do another woe is me grieving routine.

This thread is like having a glass of wine in the pub and finding that everyone else can see how difficult a shared acquaintance is.

“Decades ago, I’d stand excitedly by the front door , waiting for the Avon Lady to ring the bell and hand over the book. I’ve always been a huge admirer of everything Avon does”.

Disclaimer : what Sali might say😉.

I guess Margaret Atwood personally insisted Sali got that review copy. “Us authors” have to stick together.

I remember Hirons ranting on the SHB forum about some troll that was giving her shit who was also a member of SHB. Saki has to intervene as CH was demanding the troll be doxxed.
I use the word troll loosely as it is totally possible it was just a woman with a differing point of view gym CH.
Please remember that Caroline is not hostile and doesn’t like confrontation ✌😉🤔😊😁

6. Don’t worry about accumulating loads of beauty products because Sali went to a HUGE conference on this HUGE issue. Nobody is more worried about it than the beauty industry they are HUGELY concerned and Sali doesn’t know anybody trying to tackle sustainability with the same commitment.
^^ She flew to the States to go to a shampoo company's talk on sustainability. Cutting edge science that - shampoo bottles being recycled, obvs need to witness the wonder irl. I highlighted the irony and was told how else do you expect me to stay up to date. hmmm skype conference? reading some journals? watch recordings?
