The Emails I Can't Send Deluxe and Short n Sweet eras both felt sexy but still "for the girls" - wearing cute outfits and making cheeky clever songs with a wink. But the Netflix Christmas Special and the Man's Best Friend era have felt super male-gazey - ass and tits to camera, glorifying smoking, the Tears chorus literally being "I get wet at the thought of you". It's starting to feel a bit sleazy.

I'm not a fan at all. Her voice is bland and forgettable to me. I don't particularly like her style of dress, she seems very uncomfortable in her own skin/ doesn't know who she is.. I can't explain it very well. She appears very disingenuous to me and uninterested. I don't think she will be remembered in 5 years.

Finally gave her music a listen today while doing some housework.

Really, people are paying $100+ to see this dollar store pop girly? "They call me a slut all because I liked a boooooooy" girl shut up you're not cute and no one's ever bonded over the Black Eyed Peas. I'm not even generally a music snob but I found myself getting annoyed listening to her whiny little voice before finally switching back to the Chappell/Troye/Charli/Miley channel. No wonder she's attached herself to someone more interesting, the pop landscape is otherwise way too crowded for someone this mediocre.

This doesn’t actually make sense Her current image and the use of sexual innuendo started way before she dated Shawn Mendes in her last album. The Short n sweet album where she reveals he “cheated” is the same album that she’s singing about sex. There was never an attempt at a woe is me image, the whole album roll out was based around the 50s babydoll thing.

If you're going to make a "feminist" statement, get your facts right.

The thing is, my problem isn’t with her being a “sexy pop star” (I love lots of female pop artists’ music, so I’m used to it).

It’s that specific album cover, with the aggressive hair grabbing and the demeaning pose. There‘s nothing about it that makes it satirical.

I'm not sure what to make of her at all. When I saw the Espresso video, I thought the concept of it was that it was an intentionally ironic parody type video where she portrayed herself as a rather vacuous overly sexualised airhead character. I thought it was purely for the purpose of that particular video and intended to be amusing.

But after seeing a bit more of her, it seems like that's just actually how she is all the time? But I still can't work out if that's just how she's marketing herself and it's a bit of a character she's playing, or if she's actually just like that. I find her rather baffling.

It’s very interesting! She was coming up in my “new releases for you” on Spotify so I googled her. I had heard of her from Disney, but had no idea she was making music. I assumed she was an industry plant, given her new found popularity.
