The grant isn’t for people who can’t afford a PhD. It’s a sign of prestige - people apply for funding in the humanities as a way to say I am important and so is my research despite funding being extremely hard to get nowadays. I don’t think she turned down the first offer due to mental health. I think it’s because she applied for funding and didn’t get it. If you look online at PhD forums you will see they have this very privileged mentality - elitist actually - that says if you don’t go to Oxbridge or get some kind of funding then you aren’t good enough and your PhD is worthless. With Ruby the way she is about being perfect I guarantee you that she would never have accepted the Oxford thing without some money she could tell everyone she got.

Oh and just one more thing - that Princeton grant is extremely random (from what I’ve seen though I could be wrong) and I have a feeling it’s likely through a connection at Oxford that recommended her, such as a potential PhD supervisor, that got it. That’s how stuff at Oxbridge goes a lot of the time and more broadly in academia in general. It’s all about who you know and staff there tend to have the best connections. But who knows

I wonder where she will live while doing the PhD because they take a while. Unless she intends on doing so fromher bedroom in Bones Manor.
She'll no doubt have a room at Oxford where she'll stay for a few hours a week, just long enough to get the requisite shots of her staring at screens while looking hopelessly miserable in the library, shots of her staring at screens while looking hopelessly miserable in her room, plus a couple of shots of her grimacing outside the RadCam trying not to look hopelessly miserable, then she'll spend the rest of the week at home sharing shots of her dingy windowsill. Rinse and repeat for 4 years.

This is a valid point, she seems to hate every moment of academia. How on Earth will she manage for 3-4 years when it becomes her entire life
Surely, if she was actually interested in doing a PhD, she’d do everything in her power to actually go - including using some of her money, which we know she has plenty of? But here she is pretending it hinges on funding. Honestly sounds like a back door she’s leaving open in case her mantle halth gets her again.

I really hope that if she doesn’t get the funding, her parents put their foot down and insist she does something.
She can’t seriously be considering having another gap year at the age of 26/27 - she’s wasting away her life sitting in her parents home. It’s obviously not good for her mental health and she needs to move on to one of the pHD, a different job, moving out etc

It's kind of her to really dumb things down for us, her inferior and foolish followers!
She should correct herself and say the first on in her family to ever graduate uni. Marfa went to uni but she did drop out…
All this PHD stuff just screams that Roobs has absolutely no idea what she wants to do with her life/career…..She LOVES the thought of being aesthetic and wandering around Oxford with a coffee chain subscription and looking good in a library etc, when ultimately she oozes struggles with study, what to do with herself if she dares to accidentally have 2 minutes free time in her carefully constructed to do list for every minute of the day.
Realistically she struggles to integrate and to achieve the actual work set, and not just do her own personal studying of what she thinks she’s interested in…..eg, at Exeter she would often do a sub study which wasn’t related to her actual syllabus and hand in work where she felt it was better to use a different angle, even though her mentor/professor had tried to steer her back to the actual topic…

I wonder if she feels stuck, her Youtube 'success' is because of her 'study' content and she doesn't have anything to pivot onto like other YouTubers who started in studytube. It probably still brings in a wage for her with minimal effort and not having to grow up in the real world. So she signs up for more academia to keep it going. It's supported her for too long that seems she doesn't want to break free. That's why I respected Eve Bennett, once she settled into real life and work she realised it was time to move on.
Definitely ….the granger angle, the studytube stuff all gave her a different identity, especially back in the day where it (study) was so popular and ‘sought after’…. She’s stuck without her own identity and without knowing how to move on and grow as a person….
Yes, Eve Bennett seemed to naturally progress and move on when it was right to do so and into her next ‘chapter’ as it were….
A friend of mine’s son (he’s now late 30’s) went from one set of studying to another (not online), and never really settled, just kept finding something else to study next…..he’s only ever comfortable if he is still in education….has major anxiety and is super lost when it comes to life itself and just cannot deal with normal everyday things…..I wonder if Ruby will be the same in 10 years or so…
I think a lot of studytubers/influencers don't really have much clue what they want from life and studying is the thing to do, so when it comes to selecting a career path it becomes a bit more complicated and they try to stay relevant with their youtube audience
Maybe because she never plans to get a traditional full time job she is trying to make she has enough in savings to not have to make youtube videos anymore. She should be saving for retirement in general, but everyone knows you cant control your audience, so the day she cant make money through youtube may come a lot sooner than the usual retirement age.
