This one she is working on at the moment is a children's book I think the other one was a young adult book although I'm not 100% certain.

And of course, there is the fact that she's never managed to stick out any of the jobs she has actually had. The thing I'd say about the civil service (having known a lot of people who completed the fast stream) is that there's a really competitive application process that I don't think she would stand out in it. Credit where credit is due: she has qualifications, she has built up a community, she is creative. But competitive? Not to me (for whatever that is worth).
Honestly, the only future I personally see for her is in academia - and that's not particularly stable at the moment, either. Maybe she does a PhD to delay real life for a few more years and then lectures in a college/university. But has she done much research? Attended conferences? Shown a commitment to her subject beyond speed running her way through books?
I honestly do not have a clue. And you're right, for a self-proclaimed writer... where is the writing?
As a Civil Servant, I beg you not to encourage her in this direction. I could not deal with a twirler.
Well unless you wanna count her “absurdist” Agatha Armitage letters on Substack. Which did you know are illustrated by Chris Riddel? (Why he’s choosing to illustrate them I don’t know)
I read some of them every now and then. I find them hard to read, mediocre at best and they read like some Alice in Wonderland short stories nonsense as opposed to the absurdism books I have read. Why people like these posts on her Substack is beyond me…
She is relatively young. It's normal and natural to try different jobs and careers throughout life and especially as you start because sometimes it takes a while to find an employer you actually like enough to want to work there longterm
I fully agree, to be honest! I’m Ruby’s age and my career hasn’t been a straight line (despite now working a very traditional career).
My point is more than I don’t know what she would do, not that there isn’t a perfect career out there for her. YouTube is really the only thing I can think of that she’s stuck at long term
I may have heard that somewhere…. But no, I’m assuming she’s either commissioned him or he genuinely likes her work.
Ooooh! I’m intrigued. I’ll have to go check them out. Again, credit where it’s due if she has a fanbase for it. I always assumed her education would have trained her more towards literary history/critique than creative writing
Has anyone seen Amy Smith on TikTok? I watched one of her videos where I believe she’s working on the second draft of her novel. Yes Ruby, SECOND of quality work. She holds down a full time job and actually lives a life. The very next video on my FYP was Ruby at a train station still pretending to be a writer or visiting family or some tit like that. The difference is staggering.
Do you think we could be so lucky as to get another prolonged, unhinged, borderline psychotic monologue about her impending springtime death like the last time?
You could tell me she'd just reuploaded an old one and I'd believe you.
Either that or we're overdue another another classic 'Ruby doesn't check something out of forgetfulness or sheer stupidity, suffers a very minor inconvenience that was entirely avoidable, then has an emotional, teary breakdown on camera, embellishes reality to blow it into a major tragedy, then blames other people or unseen forces for something that was totally her fault and completely inconsequential anyway' moment.
Entirely possible she'll cry on camera for 5 minutes that she was very nearly stranded in the wilderness of Stourhead, forced to live homeless in the national park to suffer a fate of being eaten by foxes or hunted for sport by the locals, all because she misread the times of her train, missed it and had to get the next one ten minutes later.
I'm in my early 30s and going back to college for a medical field degree this fall, so yeah that checks out. I hope she does't end up being me and going back to school at this age, though, i don't wish this on anybody lol. I was supposed to have a career, marriage and kids by now smh. (I was a Ruby in my 20s and now I'm paying for the consequences of my actions, hurray!)
Sending you love and support and reassurance that this doesn't last forever. As someone working in the field, it was truly bad enough in my 20s - made worth it by the feeling of getting that certificate and graduating. There isn't a guidebook to life, you're doing splendidly!
