Also, has anyone noticed that Ruby, despite being a literature student, a self-proclaimed voracious reader and an endlessly curious person, almost never reads authors who aren't British or American? I cannot recall her reading translated works.

She claims to know Spanish. Latin America and Spain have incredibly rich literary traditions and they are contemporary authors doing amazing work. She seems to like fantastical stories, Latin America is the home of magical realism and yet she is never able to reach beyond her British classics and expose her supposed curious mind to something new.

Don't get me wrong. I love British classics. I particularly love American literature. But I also try to read Japanese, Nigerian, Colombian, Argentine authors; I make an effort to get to know the world through narratives. Ruby would benefit tremendously from reading about places and lives that are different from her very cloistered existence.

The weirdest part is that her audience seems completely unbothered by all this.
I'm surprised she didn't hop onto the Osamu Dazai trend when the Bungou no Stray Dogs anime was out (she's def not gonna be an anime fan, but you'd think it would pique her interest / she'd fake because it's literature based & Dazai was all over book instagram for a while)

I was surprised by that also. In the U.S., the marriage status-neutral title of "Ms." has become standard for women almost everywhere. I think you'd have to venture deep into right-wing evangelical culture to find anyone still clinging to the old titles of "Miss" and "Mrs." Case in point: during a U.S. Senate hearing last year, I noticed that the ultra-right wing senator from Tennessee, Marcia Blackburn, had a name plate that designated her as "Mrs. Blackburn"...because of course she did. It's a whole culture war thing over here. Does Piper's Corners have any religious/ideological affiliation?
The president is "The Rt Reverend The Lord Bishop of Buckingham", so it seems like a church of England school (if these can be private?)?
Interestingly, some women on the staff list do refer to themselves as "Ms". Perhaps they can choose their own titles? Must be such a conservative bunch overall though, given that most are Miss or Mrs.

I know it's still quite common in the UK, but personally I don't like distinguishing between a married an an unmarried woman. It is outdated, in my opinion. If all the men can be Mr irrespective of their marital status, so should it be for the women. Some European languages (such as German) don't use this distinction anymore because it's seen as insensitive.
i retained my pre-marriage surname for work and stay Ms. I use Mrs (family surname) for personal things.

Is she supposed to know her masters results soon? She said her anxiety was bad, I assume that might be why?

Has anyone brought up the fake freckles in the comments of her tiktok or youtube? I'd be really surprised if they haven't but also not because I don't doubt she'd delete them

I'm catching up on the threads but... Gossip Guy. I am a huge Captain America fan and I need to know if he liked the book. Did he also think it talked about war too much or did the whole being a soldier in WWII thing make that more palatable? 😏
I tried to find gameplay footage of the book club section without voiceover commentary online and this was the best I could find:

(The book club discussion is from 36:50-41:25)

At the point I'm at now, Wolverine has joined the book club, showed up having not read the book, then recommended a simplistic pulpy adventure book apparently aimed at children for the next discussion, so at least Ruby has some kind of representation in the game.

I think we might actually see her downfall during her masters, whatever uni she goes to. They’ll probably be a good chunk of older/mature students who have had a lot more worldly experience than her and probably produced legitimate, good books. Her amateur work will severely lack in comparison, she’ll really need to buckle up if she wants even a sprinkle of academic validation.
Yeah this. I think its going to be very difficult for her. Especially if Oxford rejects her Masters application. I worked and did my Masters, but it was Masters by course work and the modules of the course work were very much in line with the field I work in. I think English lit is solely Masters by thesis. Not sure tho, I did my Masters in an Australian university.

Anyone know when the deadline for submitting her masters application is? Also when will she find out?
Im pretty sure they're closed and she should know really soon.

I’m English haha but thanks for the explanation, I asked because I went to a RG uni and have just looked now and lots of people high up in certain departments didn’t go to Oxford or Cambridge and it hasn’t seemed to stop them from making it in academia. Am sure an oxbridge degree is advantageous in some ways but there are lots of other routes And unis that would be a better fit for many applicants including probably Ruby and wouldn’t stop anyone from carving out the life they want, it’s a shame she and others become so fixated on oxbridge and attach their identity to it in a way that is unhealthy. Lots of other unis are very picturesque and have great courses and give the dark academia vibe that seems to make studying more enjoyable for her, I know lots of successful people with degrees from other RG unis, it’s a shame people view getting into oxbridge as a be all and end all and an end in itself when life and careers are about sooooo much more. I think it would be so healthy for Ruby to get a different perspective on all this and I say this as someone similar to her in lots of ways when I was growing up
I think @Poguely got your message confused with mine, because I mentioned that I did my Masters in Australia. I agree with you, it is a shame that people get so fixated on Oxbridge. Its even sadder when its someone like Ruby, who has clearly been told by others that she has a real chance at studying there, instead of helping her keep it real.

She lives her life, facing decisions with a 'what would Hermione do?' attitude. 🤣 She isn't a good fit for Oxford clearly. Its an intensive study program, (not sure if Masters is as intense as undergrad as their intake % is slightly higher for Masters) and they probably only need to look at her socials to see her mindset, lifestyle, mental well-being etc.

This is just a question about the Russell Group. (I'm not from the UK) Is there any quantitative factor between a normal degree vs a Russell Group degree? Is it like say, an Ivy League school (Harvard, Dartmouth, Brown, for a US comparison) where it's just prestigious?

I know in the US private schools hire a lot of non-qualified individuals, but they are also usually very well-established in their field (an ex-professor or a researcher if the school isn't religious) I just don't understand why she was hired (and then put on a full-time staff list?) if she's fresh out of college?
In all honesty not really, I went to a non Russell Group university because my A Level grades were average at best but I did my BSc and got a high 2:1 and then did an MSc and just missed a distinction. However, through networking and voluntary work I managed to secure a job in research which got me an authorship on a top molecular biology paper. Even my BSc university would attend conferences and meet with Russell Group universities to discuss research. I really don't understand the gap between them since a lot of work is collaborative now but then again I am in STEM so it might be different for the Humanities guys haha

I'm sure there is a fee just for applying for an Oxford masters course (about £100 off the top of my head), and if you don't succeed I'm not sure if you get it refunded? Again, it shows how much money she has (and how she doesn't value it).

I know that Ruby obviously has Other Issues going on but the fact that she's gone on a walk, a run AND done yoga signifies that she's floundering to me. She has no idea what to do with herself. Even with a part-time job she's driven by her compulsion to BE PRODUCTIVE and say she's done all of these things because deep down she knows she's stagnant in comparison to her peers. It's just desperately sad.
It really signifies TBH how bad her ED has gotten

she could at least walk to work, but I guess someone has to drive her... (how far can that be?)

After 7+ years, she should've gotten better with practice even if by accident, but she's as bad as ever.
Her videography skills have improved a lot though. That doesn't mean that they're good, but do you remember the framings she used to choose in her old videos where she stands in front of that white wall in her room with the poster on it? Now at least the angles aren't tilted anymore and she doesn't show more of the wall than of herself in her videos
