I skipped through most of that vid because it just seemed like one massive ramble trying to convince herself everything was fine. The best thing I got from it was my new PP which conveys that exact feeling. And I also had the smug, snarky realisation that I definitely didn't work as hard as her on my undergrad dissertation but I did get a higher mark (this was some years ago). Guess what Ruby? It didn't change my life and I'm still a hot mess

I just watched Eve Bennett's update video (clearly doing a round up of study youtubers I'd forgotten existed) and wow, what a difference in how she presents compared with Ruby. Seems like she's suddenly grown up, moving to London to pursue a vocational course, living with a boyfriend. I do find it really sad to see people like Ruby and Holly Gabrielle just haven't progressed past education. This studytube stuff probably doesn't help, they seem so socially stunted.

I watched one of PaigeY’s video’s recently and the difference between her and Holly is mind-blowing. Paige got a grad job, is working, studying and is in the process of buying a house. I’m not sure that Paige is ‘normal’ either in the sense that she does seem to be a very high achiever with a very different kind of family to Holly, but looking at the pair of them as Cambridge grads, the difference is just amazing. It’s sad to think about Ruby too in that context - she has so many opportunities and so much privilege, yet she’s graduated uni with nothing more than a plan to hide in her bedroom for a bit longer and pretend to write novels.

There is not a University MA programme in the land that would turn their nose up at a 74 for a dissertation mark. Not even Oxbridge. Why would they?

The problem would inevitably arise in an interview scenario, where our protAGONIST would decry her grade as paltry and how her dissertation actually deserved a much higher mark. Instant red flag.

Oxford doesn’t do interviews for masters courses. Offers are made based on transcript & statement of purpose. And she looks great on paper.

She studied Theology in her first year then switched to English. She couldn't carry over any modules so had to start studying the English programme from scratch.

Of course coming out with a very good grade at university is important; it would be frankly disingenuous to say otherwise. In that sense, Ruby has done what she set out for (even if she thinks a 76 is underwhelming ).

However, in terms of the bigger picture, has Ruby truly succeeded at university? Let's take a look:

• She doesn't have any form of independence - she needs her mummy to chaperone her on day's out, pretending she has an "errand" to coincidentally run at the same time; she can't spend more than a week or two at uni before rushing home to be babied.
• She only has one real friendship to come out of 4 years at Exeter and her friendship with Blakeney is intense, seemingly one sided and borderline unhealthy. Having a one "best friend" at 22 and not a wider circle reeks of being 14 and once again shows her inability to grow up.
• She doesn't seem to have been involved in uni life at all. Has she engaged in any societies? The only evidence we have is the trampolining, which she seemed to hate and was deliberately late for.
• Since finishing, she's taking a year out to stay at home in her downsized childhood bedroom, while writing a children's book (something that is only achievable through her YouTube success), going back to school uninvited to give a talk (reflecting she's desperate to cling onto the past/childhood) and you just know she's going to apply to do a Masters at Oxford. Again, harkening back to the fact she still hasn't got over a rejection from almost 5 years ago.

Compare this to Eve Bennett, a Studytuber the same age as Ruby, who has just graduated:

• She's secured a vocational course and will be moving to London to start that
• She's moving in with her boyfriend, who she's dated for 6 months, after living with him and a wider circle of friends
• She's lived abroad various times, reflecting her independence
• She goes out and explores Oxford and has immersed herself in uni life and the city, while often making other daytrips with friends

The difference is actually night and day. Considering they were in the exact same position with top A-Levels and going to top unis (granted, Eve went to Oxford but Exeter is also very good), Ruby has massively failed in comparison. She's not grown up and if anything, she's regressed.

Holly Gabrielle is exactly the same. Imagine graduating as the top in your year at Cambridge for biology, doing a Masters at UCL, clearly having massive potential and the ability to make a difference, while at 24 she's instead decided to churn out shoddy YouTube clips to 10k views, doing Q&As with her mum and being babied at home at 24 years old.

Eve should be an example for all of them. The only one that stops the whole Studytube community looking completely socially inept and detached from the real world.

The only reason she wants to go to Oxford is because it's "the dream she had since she was 12", wants to vindicate her earlier rejection, put out Oxford YouTube videos and have the kudos of going there.

It's absolutely nothing to do with it being the best choice for her, as it probably isn't. It's to earn recognition.

I know I'm late to the party but honestly the look on her face when she opened her results and realised she 'only' got a 74 on her diss. Ruby is so insanely entitled that she expected to get a mark in the 80-90 range. It just makes me so angry that she has the audacity to sit there and act disappointed that she got a 76 overall before going on to say grades are just a number to her impressionable audience.

But when you take a step back and look at Ruby's situation, she's played herself to the point where it's actually funny. Fair play to her for getting a first because that's amazing, and it's not a low first either. But she's wasted 4 years at uni and has nothing to show for it other than her first class degree. She never did normal student things like going out or socialising or meeting new people. She didn't join any clubs or societies either. She never had a typical student experience and that's her own doing. While everyone else who went to uni with her have plans for the future, she's confining herself to her childhood bedroom with no job, no friends and no social life, in the exact same position she was before she went to uni. What a depacle

In the last thread, Ruby finally received her degree results and was disappointed that she only got a measly first. Not to worry, though! Ruby then told us that grades aren't important (while also telling us that they are important and employers will judge you if your module results aren't above 70).

In other news, it took her three hundred years to read Call Me By Your Name.

Umm, what else happened? It's all a blur now.

Wait till she finds out that employers will judge you on your interpersonal/transferrable skills and previous work experience before they even look at your degree results!!

I don’t know where she’s got the idea that employers see your grade and know what level you work at? That doesn’t make any sense, people can work 10x harder and come out with a lower grade. If she means the level of work you produce, that’s not relevant outside academia.

On a different note, I like Eve Bennett but I don’t think the comparisons are that legit as they have totally different personalities. Being in a relationship also doesn’t equal maturity, especially as Ruby has said she’s not sure she wants that.

Especially on the level of detail she seemed to be making it out to be. No employer is going to sit and look at your exact scores for every module? Sure, the grade (first, 2.i, etc) might matter more generally, but I don't even know anyone who has their exact score (54 or 67 or whatever) listed, because it really doesn't make a difference. Unless you're applying to a specific academic course that focuses in on a particular module, I can't imagine anyone ever caring how well you did on the "children literature" module, or whatever. She just seemed so out of touch during the entire video. She's got a brilliant score to be proud of, but the way she talks about it makes me miserable.

I would love her to make a video about what she got from her uni experience. Not just academically, but how she thinks she grew as an individual. I think that's really the most important part of university, not the feedback like she kept hammering on about. The amount of personal development and growth that myself and my friends have gone through is really what we've come out of university with. Some of that has been academics related, but there's a large part of just becoming an adult that I would love to hear her opinions about. Sadly, I don't think she ever really understand or engaged with the sides of uni that aren't seminars and spending hours on essays.

I'd also be interested to hear about her Uni experience. I can say that the teaching at Exeter is generally great and the assessments are challenging (though graded generously), so she might be fulfilled academically. But there are so many other great things that she doesn't seem to have taken advantage of. The careers department is amazing at helping students get internships and graduate positions (I know lots of universities have a great careers department, but the one in Exeter has so much funding pumped into it and goes above and beyond. They'll do a mock interview with you even if you're just applying for a part-time student job for term time). As a small city it's a different university experience from what a lot of people enjoy but there is honestly so much to do in the city and around Devon and Cornwall. She might be very happy with her grades, but I'm sure people on her course have done just as well and also been able to take advantage of everything else the uni and the wider area offer.

It almost sounded like she was repeating what she’d heard at a Uni lecture or something re grades. I don’t know about academia but in other jobs if they ask for a degree as an essential requirement, they’ll just tick that part when shortlisting you. In some applications, they’ve just asked on the form if you have the relevant degree, and you don’t put your grade in at all.

in my first (or second) master semester (2020 and 2021 blur into one year in my mind) we had to create a how-to-video about something linguistic-related. It was fun. other assignments were a bit more challenging, especially statistic using R (that's a programming language like Python).
It may not be that unlikely to create something like this escape room thingy. I prefer these creative things. But learning about statistics and R was also great (I even passed the exam in my first attempt ).
