Who the flip is/are “they”?! Like others, I tried to read it with fresh (as a daisy…) eyes, and could seem glimpses of good writhing.

However, the lack of clarity with “they” was infuriating. Is it the roses? Is it the writer and her family (“they’d planted”.) The whole thing lacked clarity, and Ruby’s approach here shows a complete lack of understanding about what makes a good writer…

… good writers are GOOD editors! Look at a Ted Hughes or John Clare notebook, and they are showered with edit and notes. Look at a Joanne Rowling’s manuscript and you’ll find spiderweb scribbles all over it! For Ruby to post such an unabridged piece of writing, that barely looks like it’s been proofread, shows not only an arrogance but a complete lack of understanding about what it means to BE A WRITER.

And considering that this is her whole identity now, to quote Ms Hermione Jean Granger… it’s potentially problematic!

That "poem" is utterly hilarious. Is this what Ruby's thoughts sound like? I'm scared. It's giving "fill up the word count" and "badly cosplay a lunatic."

The comments on her piece of writing on insta are just something else. Do none of her followers have a single brain cell between them that they could dedicate to critical thinking? Or are they all like me and are keeping it to themselves in the hopes that she’ll continue making an idiot of herself

Once again, aspiring bestselling author doesn't understand how POV works.

Apparently first-person POV now includes:

The viewpoint of a someone you're clutching by the throat as you spin maniacally in a field when you should be getting a job.
The perspective of the farmer watching as you trespass through their land, prancing about like an escaped mental patient.
The point of view of a wild rodent about to attack your ankles.

Another point: I know this field must be opposite Ruby's house or something, but it's so boring to see the same place each time, and I really wish Rubes would find a more interesting walking route. If she's into hiking, there's a huge number of trails across the UK and she now has the free time to walk a few of these shorter-distance/local routes.

I'm actually surprised Ruby feels comfortable walking alone in the countryside. I don't mean to scaremonger and I'm not trying to discourage her from doing this, but I love hiking and still feel anxious walking without friends or a group.

I’m so dumb I only just woke up, so looking at my phone through half asleep eyes and half functioning brain, I thought that part of her shadow was an actual mouse running past her foot as she trampled through the fields, and I was like corr gossip guy has good eyesight to spot that, I have to see for myself! I then proceeded to go on insta and watch the stupid reel on repeat for like 2 minutes before realizing that there was no little mousey and I’d just given her a bunch of views for no reason lmao

If everyone's doing it wrong, you'd think literary perFACTshunist Ruby would want to go against the grain use 'POV' correctly and, y'know, spell things properly.

Instead, her social media, her content and her life in general is a mess of errors and language mistakes.

"Because everyone else does it" isn't a great excuse for a self-proclaimed genius to do everything wrong.

I've definitely seen many people use it correctly tho, like there's this girl who posts sketches about bratty middle schoolers andit's always like "POV you're at this girl's house" and she's playing the girl whose house you're at, stuff like that

It’s essentially an A/A+, you can’t get higher than a 1st class degree, which is what Ruby got. Its hard to compare it to America because it’s rare to get above 70 at undergrad level — but a 70 is a solid piece of work.

When I did a year abroad in America as part of my undergrad, they classified it like below (might not be accurate but it’s roughly right):
76+ = A+
74 = A
70 = A-
66 = B+

So if I got an A it would go down as a 74 on my transcript etc.

Obviously y'all are entitled to talk about whatever you want but I find it a bit dumb when people make fun of Ruby for making literacy mistakes on social media like with the whole POV thing, I'm an english student too and I (hopefully lol) use correct grammar in essays but when writing stuff on texts/snapchat/insta idgaf it's not that deep

Edit: and I'm not talking about that long post that was supposed to be showing off her writing, I'm talking about random insta captions

Yes but you're probably not getting brand sponsorships and making a living off social media. This is her job so she should be more professional. It's not some private page that only a couple dozen friends see. If she wants to promote herself as an author and also promote her stupid planners it should be treated as a business account.

But pretending to be a literary scholar and a writer is her brand. She's the one who claims to be an intellectual. She's the one who uses big words incorrectly just to come across as smarter. She's the one who plastered her uni results all over her channel and claimed she wasn't happy with them like she deserved more. So it's just too ironic when she makes blunders like these on social media.

Basically if you don't wanna be criticized for your grammar, vocabulary and academic and analytical skills don't draw attention to them and claim you're better than everyone else.

Totally out of topic but i wanna ask smth, in last thread it was discussed that ruby asked for recommendations of italian literature and i noted down a few names mentioned. But my phone broke and i lost my notes. I remember Sciscia not anything else. So if anyone wanna remind me i would appreciate, sorry for off topic request ♡

I wish I was that privileged.

TL;DR: I don't hate Ruby but am disappointed by her lack of development and inability to take criticism. I'm here because I genuinely wish to see her improve and get better, though the more I read the less I'm convinced that will happen. I'm not going to hold back a response or modify it just because it goes against the general consensus.

Nope, I just tells it like I sees it. I'm simply someone who idolised Ruby a bit 4-5 years ago, rediscovered her recently, became suspicious of her shit and came here. I'm in general agreement with most in these threads, though I don't carry some of the vitriol others do for her (which is none of my business) and I'm not going to change my reaction to things just because it's not what others think. I liked it as a piece of writing, everyone else can be mad about it.

I'm here because I believe there is a lot to criticise her for (not least the stunts she pulled with the holocaust money, and the fakery of some of her more "impressive" productivity videos as late), and I believe it would benefit her as a creator and as a pofessional to hear it. She should have improved and developed FAR more than she has in the 4 years I wasn't watching, and she hasn't and that makes me a bit sad (like come on Ruby, buy a mic and learn how to use noise reduction and equalisation settings.)

I think that ignoring the fact she has some form of writing potential (even if it's simply the graft to sit down and write a full book) is done a lot here, but I do agree with the general consensus: she can't take criticism (actively curating critics out of her comment sections), and hence really has not improved to anywhere near the standard she would need to be an author of her own merit. Sure, her new book will probably be better than her last one (not a difficult task, we can all agree) but it won't be the expected standard of someone who makes their whole schtick loving books, has just achieved a first in a literature degree, and claims to loves writing as much as she does.

Someone mentioned Elena Ferrante (specifically the Brilliant Friend saga) and Leonardo Sciascia which you mentioned, and Ruby read Ocean Sea by Baricco (his other novels are quite good too). I think they suggested the Montalbano crime novels by Camilleri as well.

Some recommendations from me which may or may not have popped up before: Dacia Maraini, Elsa Morante, Stefano Benni, Umberto Eco, Italo Calvino, Pier Paolo Pasolini, Valerio Massimo Manfredi, for modern YA/fantasy Licia Troisi and Cecilia Randall, and for some classic novels and short story collections from the 1800's-early 1900's we have Luigi Pirandello, Giovanni Verga, Italo Svevo.

These are just some novelists whose works I have enjoyed as a modern reader reading for fun.
