I used to read my parents’ old Famous Five books when I was a kid and I LOVED them.

I also don't really know what to say to that. "Empty heads, blind praise, can't lose" really sums up Ruby fans well though, I think. I will say that I recognize this youtube handle. They have on more than one occasion chastised me for being "problematic" and mean to Ruby, for daring to point out her own very problematic behavior and inconsistencies. If I bring up the ED and triggering food related content, I am told that it isn't okay to comment on other people's bodies, and that she . If I point out that Ruby's commentary about Austen makes it really obvious that she has never actually read any of her novels, I am again told to leave the precious study queen alone, because it's okay for Ruby to not like Austen. (Of course it is, but that opinion would only be valid if she actually read the novels). If I point out that if you are writing 1,000's of words over the word limit on a paper, it means you don't know how to effectively synthesize your ideas, I am criticized for being too mean yet again. This person clearly is one of the many Ruby fans who do not accept anything but blind praise directed towards her. It's damaging and gross, but what can you do?

How dare she?! How many children through how many generations have come to know and love literature through the Famous Five?
Perhaps she finds it triggering because George is a girl who doesn't have pigtails and prances around fields sipping tea from delicate china cups?


Did she manage to find a love of Greek mythology before not finishing it? I would say I look forward to seeing a well-written review by her on SoA, but I don't want hold my breath that long...

Wtf how did she not like Famous Five, that was my favourite series as a kid!! I grew up thinking that smuggling was going to be a far bigger issue than it actually turned out to be due to reading them I like the food suggestion, but then Ruby always claims to love a picnic. My money’s on it not being school based. Kids in the summer holidays…having fun? Playing? Going on *gasp* adventures? They should be locked in their bedrooms hunched over a desk giving themselves eye strain. I mean all those day trips to Kirrin Island - so unproductive! And not a single mention of their grades in the whole series.

This is a real shame and proves that she has no taste at all! How can you not like the FF? I am disappointed. For me it's like someone not liking Harry Potter.
I devoured them so much as a child and listened to the tapes every night to go to sleep.

I have to admit I never liked the Famous Five - I didn’t mid Blyton’s school stories or things like the Wishing Chair, but the ‘whizzo, ginger beer for tea’ adventure stories never did anything for me. I also think that Blyton is a really problematic author and a lot of her books aren’t that great (sorry …) Re-reading them now you just see the racism, classism and sexism and whilst they’re good as period pieces I don’t think they stand up today. As an adult I also really, really hate most of her school stories. They’re not good examples of the genre, by any means, and it amazes me that ‘anti-bullying Ruby’ loves Malory Towers that much. A lot of what goes in in those books is downright nasty, from a bullying perspective. The recent BBC adaptation left me cold as it was all Cath Kidston dormitories and diversity - that was NOT Blyton at all and I don’t think she should have been done that courtesy, as it’s misleading. There’s a long history in children’s stories of using things like disability and race as a trope for moral inferiority and Blyton was a big part of that. I think she’s one of those authors that should now be read for historical context and not for entertainment.

I second this, I personally never got into Blyton and found them quite dated. What gets me though is that she has given a book 2 stars, but doesn’t seem to have given any written review? I’d love to see why she gave it what she did!

Well, if you're going to compare her life to a movie, this would make just about perfect sense.

Detached from the rest of the world - check
Empty existence in a void - check
Robotic monotonous voice telling herself she's not allowed to do things - check
Food designed to fill you up but has no flavour or texture - check
Endless repetition of daily tasks - check
Fans go raving mad if you criticise it - check

Have I missed anything?

Her ratings often have no bearing on the vague reviews she gives for the books, like she changes her mind as to what fake opinion she'll have and forgets to keep it consistent.

Back when she actually left reviews, in amongst the vague, word soup reviews for books she clearly hadn't read, there was nonsense like:

"This is the greatest work of literature ever written! 4/5 Stars."

"I enjoyed parts of this, but overall it was very disappointing. 5/5 Stars."

"This book was amazing! I cried several times and highly recommend this to anyone! 2/5 Stars."

My gut answer for her dislike of Famous Five would've been that they're quite dated and not going to hold up for an adult reading them for the first time in the 21st Century without the benefit of nostalgia.

But the same could be said of almost every children's book she reads, so it's likely just that The Famous Five spend their summer holidays having fun adventures without taking their parents everywhere at all times, rather than studying all summer in full view of mummy and daddy every day, like Ruby does. They also put themselves at risk to help stop crime, save other people and better their community, so Ruby clearly couldn't relate.

OT but I've been catching up on the previous threads and wanted to add my 2 cents (sorry for bringing this up again lol) - as an autistic girl who has researched the condition extensively and has worked with others on the spectrum, I really doubt Ruby is autistic. Her obsessions (ever-changing aesthetics and literature) are surface-level, and whilst she does appear to have difficulty socially, it doesn't seem like that's due to an inability rather than a self-imposed difficulty due to how she sees herself as 'superior' to others. You can be socially awkward and not autistic lol. Whilst it appears differently in each person, I just don't see it.

Also ngl some of the speculation across the recent threads has been bordering on uncomfortable due to a few ignorant comments so I just wanted to add my bit!

Completely agree with this, everyone's taste in literature is different! Ruby only writes reviews for a small proportion of the books she rates, but it'd be interesting to see what makes her like or dislike these books.

Imagine giving famous 5 a two stars but call me by your name a 5. I get literature is subjective and Enid Blyton is very outdated and honestly not a good person but call me by your name is essentially a romanticised story about grooming (sorry if you like it lol). I've not read famous five since I was in primary school though and it was written for kids it's hardly going to be the odyssey so I'm curious to see why she gave it a two.
Side note did anybody read those rainbow fairy books, Ruby the red fairy etc because I used to love them and I'm only mildly annoyed there wasn't any with my name, I'm shocked Ruby hasn't read those recently though she loves a children's book

Definitely. But she can't offer that because she doesn't actually read books. Almost none of the reviews she's left indicate that she read more than the Wikipedia page, and very few of the reviews tally with the rating given. Like everything with Ruby, it's yet more lies and bizarre inconsistencies.

Here's a random selection of reviews/ratings that don't sync up:






All-time classics, her favourite books ever and books that she absolutely loved all get 3-4 stars. Why? Probably because she never reads anything and can't offer actual criticism, but probably realised how suspicious it was getting that she hands out 5 stars to everything, so started downgrading book scores at random.

On that note, Ruby misuses the word "flippant" and acts like she doesn't throw out 5 star reviews as often as she does daily routine videos:



Because it always bears repeating that even when Ruby actually "reads" books, she just skips and skims major sections when they don't interest her (y'know, like teenage drama in a drama book about teenagers):

She's a fraud, and a complete jelly-brained fuckwit.

Very off topic but I’m sorry the fact she gave The Five a 3*…. I’m the first to defend 3* reviews and not being negative reviews, and I know opinions are subjective, but to do it in the same breath as saying it’s an important “narrative”, Ruby it’s a historical account of the LIVES of the women, anyone who didn’t profess to be a high first class English literature student aiming to go into the publishing industry could get away with conflating that maybe, but if that’s what you’re building your online presence on, and possible future career, you really can’t especially not when it comes to a book as important as The Five - and she even says the research is incredible when that’s literally the entire book, so why the rating Ruby? Sorry needed the rant

Also I discovered Lucie the Reader a couple months ago and it’s just dawned on me she’s living the life (at least online of course) that Ruby wishes she could

Oh my god I loved these books when I was a kid they were amazing!

Also I don’t really have an issue with Ruby not reviewing everything she reads. I only write reviews on GR every now and then if I want to put my thoughts down, but I’ve rated stuff 2 stars and not justified it. I’d be curious to know why she’s rated stuff the way she has, but I don’t see the fact that she hasn’t put up a review as something to criticise.
