Finally seen it and loved it. As a huge Robbie fan I knew I would enjoy it but the level of emotions I went through was unexpected. Almost made you feel guilty for being a fan back in the early days. It was distressing to understand his emotions and thoughts of that time when my memories are so fond
I actually really enjoyed it
This is how I felt. Sad that knebworth is easily one of my favourite ever days, up there with the birth of my daughter and wedding - yet he was falling apart.
This Robbienaissance is so great...particularly love random Americans finding out he exists, loving the film and becoming obsessed with him 
I noticed the press are getting digs in at him again. It hasn't done well in the US, and according to them, he is being laughed at, but if you actually read some of the tweets from people, it is far from that. As they say, it was only at selected cinemas, and many who wanted to see it couldn't. Add that to the fact that he was never really huge over there, and I'd say the fact it got over a $1 million in takings is actually good, and those who have seen it recommend it admitting it made them Robbie fans.This Robbienaissance is so great...particularly love random Americans finding out he exists, loving the film and becoming obsessed with him
They also had to remind everyone it's not done great over here as well...dickheads that they are. The thing is, Robbie and those who worked on it said they knew it was never going to be a huge blockbuster, but they were fine with it and are happy with the reviews and what people have said about it.
They're still rehashing the pathetic "Robbie fails to 'crack' America" headlines from 2001, like give it up already he's a certified superstar wherever he is and doesn't need to sell out in America to prove anything.
Having seen it over Christmas I have to say Robbie summed it up perfectly when he told Graham Norton that you spend 45 mins saying awww look at that cute chimp then it goes all Trainspotting! Very uncomfortable viewing at times.
I quickly forgot it was a monkey, it became so much Robbie that at one point when he was lying on the ground I wondered why he had weird ears on!

The rest of any film now is streaming surely? I haven’t been to the cinema in ages.
No issue with people not liking the film- if they’ve seen it. My social media is full of haters who’ve not seen it.
I’ve seen “Better Man”, thoroughly enjoyed it as a I’ve always had a soft spot for Robbie.
One thing though, doesn’t he have a Sister? Sure I remember that back from my fanatical Take That days. Watching the film, you’d think he was an only child.

I had a look at Ayda’s Instagram after reading this thread. I didn’t recognise her as the same person as in the photo posted upthread when they were younger.
I have to laugh at Americans saying ‘his music isn’t good’, like the music criticism of a place which enjoys country music is worth taking seriously
Stood out to me too. Sally’s quite a bit older I think and I wonder if she requested not to be mentioned… privacy and all.
Then why was the budget so huge? Are you saying they intentionally set out to lose money?
It's flopped commercially because a film about Robbie was never going to be able to get the ticket sales needed to recoup what was spent.
Great creativity and a great film but huge underperformance relative to budget so bizarre of them to say they only ever expected sales at this level.
I wonder if he self funded some of it; he’s insanely wealthy and it’s given him a third act of his career and he can reclaim that cash touring with a renewed profile - play “Me and My Monkey” and include footage of the CGI monkey on the big screen throughout the show etc .. it’s reignited his creative edge. I also think they will make a lot of money selling it to a streamer (most likely Netflix) it’s perfect for on there .. I think lots will be interested to see it on there that aren’t big enough fans to go out and see it in the cinema.
I probably should have said that it was quoted before the film was released, which makes it seem that while they didn't think it would be some huge blockbuster, they probably thought it would do a lot better than what it actually has. It's a shame as it seems to have done well with viewers and critics on review sites, but that hasn't transferred to actual bums on seats. If the Wikipedia page about it is true, it actually took in more money from Australia ($4.8m) compared to the UK ($1.8m).
I very much suspect he's funded this. He has a great concern with the idea of legacy (whether this is from being a Dad or getting older or whatever motivation) hence his university etc
I suspect that critical acclaim is what he wanted more than a return on investment. Maybe it will become a cult classic. If so kind of fitting bookend on a career initially built on fast fame and hype...imagine he'd be very pleased with that.
This. He wanted the critical acclaim and for his career to continue in a new improved light. He’s creatively very talented in my opinion; I’m not a super fan, but I have dipped in and out of his career over the years and he’s certainly been underestimated a lot (although that wasn’t helped by some of his overly commercial choices).
