Yikes, that Sarah Everard case turned into a real anti-govt tirade from Suruthi there haha. I'm in NZ so we had similar lockdown but with much better results so I'm not sure the impact yours had in the UK but that was a full on blame game. She basically blamed lockdown for why Sarah was murdered

Tbf the lockdown did play a part. It's how he was able to get her in his car... he said she was breaching lockdown rules.
Then our head of the police said "ladies if that ever happens to you, flag down a bus" and we all commented how bus drivers did not have authority over the police. It was a tit show.

Yeah I’m sure it played a part in the how but the guy would’ve murdered someone eventually, regardless of lockdown or not I’d imagine. Just hadn’t heard them go that political before

Not sure how much you’d have heard re our lockdown stuff in NZ but basically after lockdown happened, it came out that during the time we were told not to see anyone or have gatherings, our government were having boozy parties in their offices and breaking the rules they had set.

so most of us have a bad taste in our mouth about it, and it aiding in a young girls murder while the people telling us to lockdown were having affairs and parties in their offices didn’t help. I get the anti gov rant.

I cancelled my subscription to them because of Suruthi's politics, and they do talk about political stuff a fair bit. But, regarding this case, lockdown, and police mismanagement were a big thing. There was a vigil held that turned really nasty and the police were very heavy in shutting it down and arresting people for 'breach of covid'.

They always get political! I think they keep it more to their patreon content nowadays though.

Lockdown did play a part because the police/government near enough put fear into some people to stick to the rules, people were getting fined and the rules changed so often they were hard to understand.

Wayne definitely used that to his advantage to get Sarah to comply.

Under normal circumstances I doubt he would have found it that easy to make a woman get into his car because there would be no reasoning for a woman simply walking on the street to do so.

I agree, he probably would have escalated to murder eventually but in this instance I'm sure he knew his job and the confusion around lockdown would have made his plan work.

And it highlighted how many women and children were locked up with their abuser. Lockdown in the UK was awful for anyone remotely vulnerable.
I think we've had 4 high profile cases of children locked up with their abuser and died with the lockdown being a contributing factor.
Lockdown in the UK wasn't sorting out drawers, watching tiger King and making banana bread for millions of people. Sarah was definitely a casualty of the lockdown.

In NZ, your news is our news lol we heard about it all day every day virtually and how we were doing so much better and look how it could be going etc. Thanks for your POV everyone, think I get it a bit more now

He could have said anything to get her in the car, lockdown or not, for example "We've received a report of someone matching your description doing X..." would be enough. People just obey the police.

There should be mandatory public safety announcements broadcast daily through TV and streaming sites, setting out scenarios and what people should do in certain situations and what their rights are. A lot of people like me don't know what to do, for example, if you call 999 and cannot speak, you need to tap something or another -- people don't know this and even after Sarah's murder most people would still obey if a lone policeman cornered them.

Listening to older RH episodes -- good God, Hannah sounded like a bleeping foghorn. Her voice is more bearable in the recent episodes, thank goodness.

What I'm saying is this person was going to murder a woman that day no matter what was happening around. Lockdown itself was not a "contributing factor" it was simply one of many opportunities to murder a woman in a society that is horribly unsafe for women. The contributing factor was the position of this vile murderous individual being a police officer.

So you are right & it goes without saying that we need proper vetting (and monitoring) of police and we need sensible people in charge.

Unfortunately we're NEVER going to achieve that to the level that is needed to keep people safe. Police already go through vetting and evil still slips through the net, or the evil is activated after they've been vetted. Better vetting is needed, but again it's not going to catch them all.

So -- no, we *shouldn't need broadcasts, but we do because the average person is unaware of safety protocols and their basic rights, and we live in an imperfect world where evil exists and will never be stamped out.

I think we can honestly do better than this though:

The first part of the report, published in February 2024, found that Couzens had a history of alleged sexual offending and that the failings in the vetting process allowed him to become a police officer.

Its not Sarah's fault she didn't know how to challenge him.

I'd still love to go to one of the live shows, the chances of them coming to Oz seems unlikely though.

Yes - the argument is always “what about supporting women and not beating them down” (often with a “be kind” chucked in there, for good measure), like having a tina means you have to me loyal and supportive to each and every other woman. Some women are just mats and don’t deserve unfailing support!
