What the actual ever loving duck is happening to this country? This is horrifying and disgraceful.
Clearly a targeted attack and if it’s fellow Colombians then it’s not all that surprising if you know about that country and it’s crime

You can't rehabilitate people by treating them like crap.
Yes you can, they wouldn't want to go back in if they didn't have it so easy, I have a couple of family members in and out of prison, they boast about making their own alcohol, drugs if needed and mobile phones, they have money sent in to shop, TV's and game consoles, and when they get released they get a case worker and found a flat without having to pay any deposit, 2 years later they back inside and the whole cycle starts again because they know how cushy they have it if they get sent down so it doesn't bother them.

We need tougher sentences and prisons in the UK. People aren't scared of going to prison because they are so cushy
The other day I was reading about a prison where the powers that be refuse to call cells what they are, they call them rooms.

Nonsense like this has a lot to answer for.

imo the whole cycle starts again because they aren't addressing the root of their problems that makes them act like this, not because they have a whale of a time in prison.

Prisons, in my opinion, are deterrents and punishments for crime. That clearly doesn’t work as you get the same reoffenders in on a cycle for a large proportion. (See also the school detention system)

What we need is large scale societal reform that stops crime in the first place. Now that would have an impact.

Recidivism has a lot more to do with social issues than prisons being “cushy”. Being locked up and removed from society is a punishment no matter how nice the surroundings. If people would rather be in prison than out free in society there are huge questions there about the kind of society these people live in.

I think both things can be true - society needs to be better, help get to the root cause but also prisons could do with being tougher. They might not stop people all together but I do believe how things are at the minute, prison isn’t enough of a deterrent to most. They might have been at one point but I think the way society is going, going to prison isn’t having the desired effect anymore.
I also, controversially, believe some people can’t be rehabilitated (horrendous crimes) and believe they should suffer after committing said crimes. But that’s a whole other kettle of fish.

I don’t think it’s wrong for people to think the justice system right from sentencing to prisons isn’t working, you just have to look at half of the things posted on this thread. But I do also agree unless society changes/more work to help fix the route problems nothing will change.

The punishment of prison doesn’t lie in how “cushy” - though having set foot in a few prisons I can assure they, they aren’t - they are. It is removal from society. Being housed with other violent people who can be unpredictable. Chaos and no locus of control of your own life. Be in prison away from your kids? When your parents/loved ones pass away when you’re in prison?

Prison has its own stink, it’s awful and I couldn’t describe it but I’d know it if I smelt it again.

You can’t make someone change unless they want to. If you’ve lived in a cycle of criminality, resolving every problem in such a way, it can be hard to desist from that when leading a life of pro-social choices is hard. And it is hard, when you have no job, skills, support possibly, addiction issues, limited finances. So easy to return to criminality. People when they are ready to change will engage with support and could have success, but societies structure don’t make it easy.

(Here I’m talking about the repeat offenders in a Cycle of crime discussed above)

I suppose it depends on what you think the primary purpose of prison should be. It is punishment, rehabilitation or removal of dangerous persons from society. It can’t be all three without major investment which just won’t happen.

That's so interesting because I also have a family member who's been in prison and he said the opposite.

Is anyone following the murder of pregnant Natalie McNally in Northern Ireland? I had wrongly assumed it was her partner but discovered today it wasnt him and he was the one to find her...they have arrested and bailed a suspect alright...would be good to hear what the local theory on this is if there is anyone here from N.Ireland...

It says the man was arrested on "suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm with intent". So did he set the dog on the woman? If so, that's horrendous.

I think we will see a lot more attacks with lockdown puppies. Loads of people got sogs and know nothing about training them. It obvs didn’t help that there was no puppy classes for them to socialise and owners to learn.
Even if you’ve grown up with dogs I would say puppy classes are good for socialisation. Also breeds can differ so it’s good for help
