Wasn't she saying just last year about how Isaac was constantly getting cards and calls home saying how well he was doing, and now he wouldn't have passed without the tutor? I think it's probably a little of both! He's not exactly blessed with intelligence anyway, and I think there might also be an element of the fact he was shagging her behind his first wife's back, and then left her on their son's birthday, so feels he has to stick with Ratface to "prove" it was all worth it.
Plus who else would keep him in the lifestyle he's become accustomed to, with expensive gifts, fancy meals out, constant holidays etc. They can barely stand each other.
