How were things in prison during covid

luckily I've been out since 2019 , before covid was even 'a thing ' . But I do know from friends I kept in contact with & from reading stuff on news, inside times etc that the lockdown was really bad inside, & it lasted a lot longer than out here (the isolating, etc) & some jails still aren't back to pre- covid times / regimes.
they had 23 hour bang up. Food, etc was brought to you. (You have hatches on your door that can only be opened from outside ) education & work was literally non existent. Education style papers were given to do in cell. They also handed out distraction packs. Because visits were stopped they started "purple visits" (video calls) basic style "out going calls only 'house' phones were put in cells. The prison service have every prisoner phone credit every week, plus gave them food (sweets, biscuits, juice etc)
Prisoners had it hard, lockdown for 2 years, at least out here we could still go out if we wanted, & had our homes to isolate in. They were locked in a small room 23hours a day. & in the summer cells are unbearable! No freezer or fridge to keep things cold.
it was easier in open & places like drake hall, as d.h is all houses, no wings.

it's interesting, & about her time inside during covid. She didn't even get 1 hour out. She was locked up 24 hours a day. She didn't get a shower until day 8! Terrible.

What happens with the washing? Do you get your own clothes /underwear back?
My boyfriend's granddad is in a care home & all the washing goes together, then it just seems to be a free for all - size dependent.
Is it like that?

I hope I’ll be welcome. I have been in prison myself, but please don’t think I’m a nasty convict. I had a horrible time in my life and did something I shouldn’t. I was in a women’s prison fir a few months just after COVID. I thought a perspective from being the one locked up might be useful.

Honestly don't be. I was so scared first visit. By the time I was on 3rd visit I was going on like I owned the gaff. Some prisons are first come first served so try get there early.

How often can they change their bedding
Do they have to buy toilet roll
Why cant they wear certain colours,/clothes
What happens if they end up with a sickness bug and they share a cell?
Do they claim benefits if in prison?

I only know the answer to some of these courtesy of my friend who is in prison at the moment.
Benefits- no, they get stopped when they’re in prison
Certain colours- I’m told it’s something to do with gang loyalties or even football loyalties. My friend is in prison in Scotland and there it’s obviously a big thing around the Celtic/Rangers and Catholic/Protestant thing
Loo roll- I don’t believe so
Sickness- I don’t know but I’m sure they will have contingency plans in place- my friend is in a single cell and she got a tummy bug. She was just kept banged up until she was better so I assume it’s similar.
I don’t know about bedding!

Mr YR used to be a POM but has just changed departments. He said that regarding the mortgage question, there is a resettlement team who can speak to lenders, mortgage companies, councils and Housing Authorities to request that payments are paused. Some agree (apparently Halifax are quite good at this) but some don’t and in that case, the team can support the prisoner in selling or liaising with families (if there are any) to support them.

I remember going to a UK one in the midlands (there were 3 on the same site ) and the officer with me was no more than 5 feet. Female. But by Christ when she barked they all behaved.

I can understand why, it’s a fantastic book and you can really tell that she truly cared about her prisons and she really wanted to make life better in there yet she also took no shit. I’m not sure I’d want to be on her bad side

Said lady is tiny, she genuinely cares about the men in her care. But Jesus, Mary and Joseph and wee donkey, the prisoners respect her.

And she drinks gin faster than anyone else I've ever seen

I know prison girlfriends/wives tik toks got mentioned on the bear thread which led to this just been watching one where they said they're off to Ibiza and nothing their man can do about it being inside and the comments are so toxic not sure how serious they are but one girl said her bf took her passport with him so she can't go away and others were saying they wouldn't date go on holiday while their partners are in prison because they would kick off

I've noticed loads of them on TikTok. I assume they get the phones smuggled in but how are they uploading them to TikTok?!

I’ve never been able to work out how they have internet. They can’t even bribe an officer to piggyback their phone as officers have to hand their phones in when they arrive for work everyday. I’d have expected there to be a “jammer” of some kind. I got accused of having a phone once cos my power kept tripping. Cheek. There were only 2 plug sockets. i had the telly in one and was using a hairdryer in the other. It blew the socket a few times. The electrician said it’s often those people charging a phone that cause that to happen. It was common knowledge that the wing above ours had two phones being used though. Little tiny ones like they could go on a key ring

not sure if anyone's interested about drugs in prison , but thought I'd tell you all about a recent (last few years) 'trend' in ways of getting high.....

it's smoked & proper smashes you. (I've never taken it but have seen women do it) .
Heroin is the main drug of choice, but spice has been flooding jails for a good while now.
tobacco & lighters are sought after too, since the smoking ban.
the amount of you can make from selling a bit of burn is crazy! 2 skinny rolls can go for around £10 worth of canteen items! .

My husband has to take buscopan for IBS and I told him people smoke it to get high and he thought I was chatting shit. I had to get the quote from the book I was reading (prison memoir) to prove my point
