This is one of the most heartbreaking trials I’ve read about. My son is a similar age to what Preston was when those monsters killed him and everytime I look at him it makes me feel so sick and sad for him and his foster Mum too
This wasn't the case for us. My son had the same social worker from birth to adoption order and that was the same for every one in my circle. My son's social worker visited weekly and we had our social worker who also visited weekly.
My son's social worker would visit at various times too, so she could see him eating, playing, waking up etc.
Honestly, it was a pain in the a, but I obviously understood why.

Why is he lying about the roast and saying he was downstairs the whole time? And going along with an unnatural sleeping position? If he were truly innocent he would have said omg my freakish former partner sexually assaulted my baby while I was making a roast. I definitely get the impression that JV had zero interest in raising a child. I think possibly they are both as bad as each other, cooked up the idea together, and JV fancied a year off work on adoption leave, with extra cash coming in for adopting. That’s why he is resentful to JMF getting out and about whilst he’s stuck with a baby who is only interesting for about 30 mins a per day for abusing. I also think JMF realised early on that JV was a bit out of control.

All well and good in principle however, if you took a look on Google there are hundreds of vacancies. Social work is underfunded, stretched & people leave the profession in droves. There is a current crisis in social care that is not being reported on - I worked in a team where 15 social workers left in a month. The same team is now only young inexperienced social workers, people don’t want to do it anymore. I was a social worker for 12 years and left.
The resources aren’t there, there’s no staff & things get missed as it’s over stretched and underfunded. All the comments Iv seen online show how out of touch people are with regards to the reality of the crisis in social care. I saw a comment where someone said every visit should be with 2 social worker. They don’t have time in their week to visit the 40 children on their case load let alone doubling up
That’s good. There has been a recent change with child protection which will make things even more difficult with regards to following things from assessment to placement however some teams (in the minority these days) do assessment all the way to final care order then transfer to looked after child but most teams are now split into assessment, child protection (including court) then looked after.

Just read that Jv was in the bath with Preston over an hour. What the hell?? What baby would be comfortable in the bath for that long? I’m currently taking care of an 18 month old family member who loves a bubble bath but even he gets bored after 15 minutes! I feel sick.
This is it for me. If JMF is as innocent as he says, there isn't enough anger. I'd be blaming myself regardless, saying I should have known, I've failed. I'd be raging, telling the judge to lock JV up. But he's very passively cooking a roast and being beautiful. Fuckkkk off!

We had three social workers really. Mine and my husbands, who assessed us for adoption, got us to panel and went through matching with us. My son had his social worker from birth, who visited him in foster care and then visited us post placement up until the adoption order was granted. We also had a family finder who straddled both sides. And then an IRO who oversaw everything.
Even when children are placed, they are still "looked after" aren't they.
Preston was still pre-AO and would have been having regular social worker visits.
But, regardless, Preston was in front of social workers, doctors, nurses, extended family and friends of JMF and JV. Nothing works if there isn't joined up thinking. Added another professional wouldn't have helped Preston at all - that's been my point all along.
I think these could be used by the judge to illustrate the sadistic element at sentencing. He was terrorising that child for his own amusement.
Maybe in the “lessons learned” there could be a suggestion for a social worker who has knowledge of the child and family to have a “gut instinct” clause, where they are allowed to exercise their judgement of the wider situation to trigger further investigation despite medical professionals saying accidental. There probably is something already, like stepping up visits but if it was an official avenue they would be given the time to do it as we know resources are scarce so without an official acknowledgment of their right to do this their hands are tied. I’ve said it before, lots of our hopes and ideas aren’t practicable but we are desperately trying to imagine a timeline where Preston was saved and where this couldn’t happen to another child. It must be soul destroying for the social workers to realise they’ve either a) been taken in by a monster or b) been prevented from following their gut (by time constraints, manager veto, protocol or whatever).
