Im sure jv said he was trying to keep him awake so he had a lie in on his bday...which i thought was a weird thing to say. Jmf didnt get bk from work until 2am
We don't know why he was trying to keep him awake but people have suspected he was waiting for JMF to come home and abuse the child together, so keeping him awake for that. Just guessing

A small thing but did anyone else pick up these details? It seems there were other things that were filmed/photographed which were obviously not considered serious enough to be reported but were discussed in court?
Guessing but I imagine the 'swing' and 'pram on rocky ground' were borderline inappropriate too but because they were shared with his mum they were OK?

Jesus the more I read the more I think JV was trying to kill him and pass it off as an accident, just every day trying a different thing - leaving him in the bath, leaving him facedown in a paddling pool, sand pit etc and obviously restricting his airways and the sexual abuse. Just the most chaotic, traumatic and devious behaviours from the get go towards a tiny baby

The fact that he opened the timer app on his phone on that last afternoon suggests to me that he'd restricted Preston's airways before, he was probably gradually extending the time seeing how long he could get away with 😔

I really don’t know after reading the summing up which way this will go now. I hope to god they don’t get away with it but I think a unanimous verdict may be difficult.

Which as any decent human being knows is absolute bull.

A baby doesn't know it's their birthday, and they don't know what a lie-in is. FFS. I hope the jury can see in and out through both of them.

I do vaguely remember hearing something about the swings and whether it was age appropriate but definitely not heard anything about a pram on a rocky path.

In my case we didn’t choose a foreperson at the start. We just had an open discussion back and forth. It was only once we’d reached a decision that the clerk reminded us we need a foreperson, which ended up being me.
I was foreperson when I did jury service because, and I quote, “you are the only one taking notes” 😳

I was the youngest person there, I must have been 25. I also thought the attitudes of the other jury members wasn’t great - they just wanted to get things over with so deliberation was very short. I wasn’t comfortable with that, although I was comfortable with the verdict. It was a very weird case, more suited to Jeremy Kyle than a crown court.

They might not be qualified in the same way that the expert witness in this case is but they surely must be qualified enough to engage professional curiosity at the first instance. If a non mobile baby repeatedly has bruises to the head or face then that should be an instant investigation imo.
In education settings, if a child has a large bruise, a facial bruise or injury, repeated bruising, you would ask multiple adults to casually enquire about it and see if the child said the same thing to each person, you might speak to the adult at pick up too and see if the story matches. Finger mark bruising would be logged regardless of explanation.
I’ve not worked in a nursery but if a non verbal baby or child presented with that many bruises then I would be reporting them for sure!

The SW knew Preston in his foster care setting didn’t present like this and then in a matter of weeks he started to be covered in bruises and in and out of hospital. There’s really no explanation the new parents of an adopted child could give that wouldn’t warrant further investigation imo cos quite frankly even if their BS about fidget spinners on windows and floor tiles and boxes falling on him were true, they were bleeping idiotic tit parents putting him in repeated danger of injury so that should have been flagged instead.
💯 The facts are Preston wasn't hidden away, he was in front of professionals all the time. My point was there isn't any point adding in more professionals if they aren't going to speak to each other.

We had to pick our foreperson, as our very first task. The last guy to be selected for the jury, volunteered and he was very good. When it came to deliberation, he made sure everyone had a chance to speak and so on. Everyone, in fairness, wanted to do things right, and there was a lot of discussion.

Slight variation in Irish courts, from what some of you have described in your experience as the foreperson, he did not have to speak much at all, in court. He wrote down the verdict. Then when when we went back in, he was formally asked by the judge had we reached a verdict, had he written it down, and had he signed the sheet. He replied yes to all three questions, then had to hand the sheet to a court official, and they read out the charges and the verdict.

It was, as I said in previous posts nothing like this case, thankfully, but it's still quite draining. I feel for the jury, they must be exhausted as well as everything else.

What’s standing out for me is all the recording of the poor little thing! Here I am, feeling guilty for being on my phone while I’ve got kids in the house, and poor Preston was just hounded from the get go, camera on him all the time ‘in case he had a seizure’. If they’re as doting as they say, I want to know how many ‘normal’ photos of him there are, or are they all of him semi conscious and not smiling?
But perhaps there's some satisfying irony in the fact that the multiple photos and recordings of poor little Preston in will be the very undoing of them, awful to see as they have been.

Yes there were definitely questions about swings. I remember them saying Preston didn’t look happy or like he was enjoying it so JV was obviously doing it way too hard/high.

When I did it, there was only one person who had done it before, so we picked him.

I agree and thank you for saying this. Reading the judge's summing up made me feel really anxious that they might get away with it. But all the arguments aside, I don't think it's possible to overestimate how impactful the video and photographic evidence must be. I just can't bear the thought that little Preston went through such torture and cruelty and that these rum of the earth won't face justice for the hell they put him through.
I thought the judge didn't emphasise things that I would certainly have stressed, but I think you are right. The evidence will speak for itself and it means that they couldn't later claim that the judge "had it in for them" and had directed against them, and use this to try to appeal. Maybe there's method in what appears to us to be judicial madness. I hope so.

During the trial for the murder of Star Hobson, where her mother Frankie was also accused (and then convicted) of causing and allowing the death of a child, there were similar discussions as we’ve seen in this trial about what she could have reasonably known when a lot of the evidence was when Brockhill was on her own with Star. There were mentions in court of everyday photos where bruises could be seen. At the time i guess i was picturing that they wouldn’t look much different to typical toddler bruises because you wouldn’t take photos if you were causing bruises due to abuse?

It wasn’t until after the verdicts (both guilty) the police released one of the photos and you can immediately see why there is just no disputing that the parent who wasn’t present should have reasonably foreseen a problem. I think when we are just reading words on a page it’s difficult to remember how impactful images and videos will be to the jury.

I’ll put it behind a spoiler as not everyone will want to see this. I can’t remember the specifics about this particular bruise but if your child was appearing with bruises like this when left in the care of someone else, what would you do?

and bear in mind it’s not disputed that JMF saw the bottom photo and various videos of genitals etc.

Oh 😮

Poor little Star!

How are there so many horrible men in the world, and so many women who will put some b of a bloke before their baby?

This was a same sex relationship. Savannah Brockhill was convicted of the murder. But still, Frankie put the relationship first.

I think JV will be found guilty very quickly but do think they will take time deliberating JMF more. It felt there was a lot of emphasis on him not being there for a lot of the offences

I hope the jury don’t need it spelling out to them that squeezing a baby like toothpaste is unlikely to perforate the bowel, cause bladder bruising and the injury to his bottom 🙄🙄🙄 they’ve literally offered no other explanation and JV invented it on the stand.

I'm going to be interested in the verdict for JMF. I don't see anyone hearing all of the evidence and thinking there is any doubt JV is guilty, never mind reasonable doubt.

I do worry though as there has been less focus on JMF given the nature of the case against him being more circumstantial and that he was present. While us that have followed it can see the sense in that JMF is guilty, I hope that it has been clear in court to help the jurors inform their decision
