Listening to the podcast I thought that perhaps there’s not enough to swing a murder verdict, especially as he’d ’bounced back’ before

but thinking about it I think the video HV took of the seizure will be his undoing because it sounds like it was plainly obvious Preston was struggling

Thank you, the last thing I want is an issue with anyone on this thread. It was a stupid idea really, I just meant like a regular health check by a Dr but I know resources aren’t there and in the vast majority of cases of adoption there is no abuse.

I can imagine typical adoptive parents are even more careful than regular parents too.
I know, we're all clutching at straws because it's all so horrific. This thread is good at giving each other grace ♥

As someone else said it will be interesting to hear what they make of it on the pod after the verdict. I think you can really hear the underlying disdain in their voices despite remaining neutral.

JV said Preston drowned, now proven he didn't drown, so there's murder bang to rights there. There's lots of videos and pics to back up the charges and injuries, just to say don't worry, they'll be found guilty.

The jury will take as long as it takes to go through the points but the end result will be guilty on all charges. They’ve had to look at things that we have only had to read descriptions of and I think I speak for us all when I say that the descriptions alone are nauseating in the extreme. Not everyone is intelligent but they all have eyes and ears and no one likes a n. And this is a new low so there you go. Also, it’s not like these two vampires are capable of coming across as anything other than oddballs at best and wholly evil at worst. Also Nick Johnson is excellent at his job but he’s no magician. We’ve seen his summing up and he’s done a good job of illustrating the defence but it’s a weak defence.

The letby one seemed to take forever and we were all on tenterhooks about it as we thought it meant she was going to be found NG on everything. In the end, they'd reached a bunch of unanimous G verdicts pretty quickly, but the press couldnt announce them until everything was in. The Daily Mail podcast did a good job of explaining it all afterwards. I cannot wait to see what they have to say once the verdicts are in on these two.
The Letby jury actually had a full week off in the middle of deliberations as a juror had a prior commitment. Think it went on for about five weeks.

No I get what you're saying, I really do.
Who would do the checking? Social workers aren't qualified to distinguish from normal childhood marks and abuse. Preston was being checked and these monsters had excuses for everything.
Blame can't lay at one persons door. This was multiple failures that we see time and time again and I'm sick of it.
Jamie saying "yous are gonna think we are abusers" should have been a red flag. No parent would ever say that! Showing that he's only worried about himself and not Preston's injury.
They might not be qualified in the same way that the expert witness in this case is but they surely must be qualified enough to engage professional curiosity at the first instance. If a non mobile baby repeatedly has bruises to the head or face then that should be an instant investigation imo.
In education settings, if a child has a large bruise, a facial bruise or injury, repeated bruising, you would ask multiple adults to casually enquire about it and see if the child said the same thing to each person, you might speak to the adult at pick up too and see if the story matches. Finger mark bruising would be logged regardless of explanation.
I’ve not worked in a nursery but if a non verbal baby or child presented with that many bruises then I would be reporting them for sure!

The SW knew Preston in his foster care setting didn’t present like this and then in a matter of weeks he started to be covered in bruises and in and out of hospital. There’s really no explanation the new parents of an adopted child could give that wouldn’t warrant further investigation imo cos quite frankly even if their BS about fidget spinners on windows and floor tiles and boxes falling on him were true, they were bleeping idiotic tit parents putting him in repeated danger of injury so that should have been flagged instead.

I agree and thank you for saying this. Reading the judge's summing up made me feel really anxious that they might get away with it. But all the arguments aside, I don't think it's possible to overestimate how impactful the video and photographic evidence must be. I just can't bear the thought that little Preston went through such torture and cruelty and that these rum of the earth won't face justice for the hell they put him through.

I just wish I could turn back time and scoop him up and away and into a place of safety and love. 😭

It ended up being the longest murder trial in UK history (certainly felt it for those of us following from the beginning too).

Also in the summing up he seemed to clarify the soft toy was used to prop Preston up so he'd stay in that position but I couldn't figure out if that was to deliberately to continue to asphyxiate him or to SA him in a certain position. Either way it proves he couldn't have fallen asleep in that position.

Which is why it's so infuriating for us when armchair detectives who've watched a two minute video on Tiktok think they know it all

What’s standing out for me is all the recording of the poor little thing! Here I am, feeling guilty for being on my phone while I’ve got kids in the house, and poor Preston was just hounded from the get go, camera on him all the time ‘in case he had a seizure’. If they’re as doting as they say, I want to know how many ‘normal’ photos of him there are, or are they all of him semi conscious and not smiling?

it points to JV having seen the situation (child suspended in an unnatural position which was restricting his breathing) and intervening to make it continue rather than stopping it. Which is ducked up.

New to the thread but have been watching for weeks now, I too have been listening to the Trial podcast and it’s harrowing hearing what happened to that poor baby boy.

What I was wondering and may have missed, was what was the point of JV trying to keep Preston asleep, they mention Moana soundtrack A LOT on the podcast and JV shouting Boo at Preston, but what excuse did he give for doing that? Is he just a sadistic b who wanted to torture a baby?

I do think the cot photos are the most damning. If you can see he was going blue from a photo, I'm sure it was much clearer in reality. There's also no way he got into that position himself.

During the trial for the murder of Star Hobson, where her mother Frankie was also accused (and then convicted) of causing and allowing the death of a child, there were similar discussions as we’ve seen in this trial about what she could have reasonably known when a lot of the evidence was when Brockhill was on her own with Star. There were mentions in court of everyday photos where bruises could be seen. At the time i guess i was picturing that they wouldn’t look much different to typical toddler bruises because you wouldn’t take photos if you were causing bruises due to abuse?

It wasn’t until after the verdicts (both guilty) the police released one of the photos and you can immediately see why there is just no disputing that the parent who wasn’t present should have reasonably foreseen a problem. I think when we are just reading words on a page it’s difficult to remember how impactful images and videos will be to the jury.

I’ll put it behind a spoiler as not everyone will want to see this. I can’t remember the specifics about this particular bruise but if your child was appearing with bruises like this when left in the care of someone else, what would you do?

and bear in mind it’s not disputed that JMF saw the bottom photo and various videos of genitals etc.

We don't know why he was trying to keep him awake but people have suspected he was waiting for JMF to come home and abuse the child together, so keeping him awake for that. Just guessing

Yes he seems to have tortured/tormented him a lot, like the “14 mins abandoned, lying in a bath with water up to his face“ video with time recording.
