As far as I know, these photos are the only ones that have been released to the media; the top left one being the most widely used. I have always thought his facial expression in that photo was “off” somehow. He looks stiff and wide eyed, not smiling, pained almost. The other photos show a baby looking normal and relaxed.

I brushed it off as just a snapshot of a funny facial expression, but having read today’s evidence which described his demeanour as “frozen watchful” (because he’s already learned that he is unsafe and his carers hurt him) I’m starting to think that photo speaks volumes.

Did I read somewhere that that first photo was taken by JV the morning after his first night with them

I think it's the high chair pic with his finger in mouth was the first morning. The one with the strange expression I would say is much later on as he looks older.

It's so sad - he's exquisite! *

Some where is a caring couple who would have considered themselves blessed beyond belief to have him in their family. I've known at least three couples who would have crawled over broken glass for the chance to adopt an infant like Preston. He should have been loved and treasured.

Instead he was handed over to a pair of sadistic abusers who sacrificed him on the altar of their perversion. This should never have happened.

*For the record - I think every infant is exquisite, and every infant should be brought up wrapped in love and valued beyond measure.

If that’s true, then the innocent explanation is that it’s a scared baby who’s spent the night with strangers, who barely slept, and couldn’t be comforted (because they were strangers). I’d hate to think that the abuse started right away, but truthfully we will never know.

Edit: if it’s a later photo (and I agree he looks a bit older) then it actually looks like a cry for help. Poor darling, it’s unbearable.

I doubt they even tried to comfort him - they considered him "spoilt" and "manipulative". I think he'll have been left to cry himself to sleep.

How, how can anyone look at that beautiful, innocent little baby and do what they did?!how? Why is man so cruel??! Why, as a race, do we do these heinous awful acts to our most vulnerable?
I just cant get my head around it, Why? Just Why?
rest in eternal, blissful peace little Preston, I'm so sorry your short time on this earth caused you so much pain Xxx

What kind of sentence length would these guys be looking at?
I think JV could be facing a whole life order for murder of a child with sadistic and sexual motivations.

If JMF is found guilty of causing or allowing the death of Preston then the max sentence he can get is a life sentence (not whole life order). Fortunately the law changed in 2022. If it hadn’t then 14 years would have been the maximum

I think the sex offences are life terms too.

Oh god I feel ill looking at that top left picture now :(( it is def taken at their house as you can see it on Zoopla. And as someone has said he is older in this one :( I feel so sad that it’s being used so widely, knowing what he was going through there :(

The more I hear the more I think JV will get a whole life order, he ticks pretty much every box for consideration of one. At this stage I'm not sure JMF will even be found guilty because we haven't yet heard anything that doesn't have some reasonable doubt about it. I do hope we get to hear more of his alleged involvement.

I just cannot stop thinking of this poor innocent baby. I really feel for the jury, what they've had to see and hear must be haunting for them. I'm only reading what happened to Preston and I'm haunted by it.

I think he'll definitely be given a WLO. The uncle of Tia Rigg was given one for his attack on her which was sexually motivated. Those poor jurors must feel like they're living under a black cloud, I'd hate to be in their shoes.

I’ve been wondering if JV quickly realised having a child was not for him so was actually trying to kill him but make it look accidental. The leaving him slumped over the cot, in the bath for 14 minutes, photo of them in the bath together with Preston looking limp etc. I think he wanted the tragic accident and the attention and sympathy that went along with it and then their time playing dads could be over.

I do also wonder if the SA was boredom on the part of JV and not the actual plan. Surely a teacher wouldn’t be so thick not to realise he’d cause internal injuries?

Just hypothesising. Still can’t wait to hear how they try and defend this evidence. That poor child.

Nah, I can’t accept either of those possibilities. He could have handed Preston back to the care of social services. He would have looked like an absolute b to every family member, friend and colleague, but he could have done it. Adoptions fail all the time.

Boredom as an excuse for raping a baby? No. He thought he’d get away with it. He WAS getting away with it. Until he suffocated Preston one too many times, for a prolonged period, didn’t get medical help, and he died.

I think the alternative, that he deliberately adopted him to abuse, is just so horrifyingly evil that I have to want to believe it something like this. He expected it be easy, he would get lots of praise/attention, but Preston was a real little person not at toy and it escalated from there when he didn’t behave in the way he expected him to.

Preferably the length of a piece of rope, but unfortunately that won’t happen.
I’m not usually in favour of the death penalty, but I would make an exception for these two evil sickos.

JV is a peodphile. Unfortunately the prime motivation would have been to gain unsupervised access to a baby so he could satisfy his disgusting urges. I don't know if his intention was to kill Preston but he treated his life and right to breath so recklessly that his death was probably inevitable.

We talk a lot in society about how lessons will be learned and about safeguarding but I think a lot falls through the cracks and unless that can be tightened so that the right people can join the dots and there is context available to the right people then someone like JV will always be able to pull the wool over people’s eyes.
For example, the abandoned 999 call and then the drive to JV’s parents house and the 111 call made later that evening, where a call back was not answered.

As a vulnerable child in the system, only recently placed with new people, it shouldn’t have been left to chance whether either of those calls were reported to Preston’s social worker and the wider team. Both calls should have been mandatory reporting events. As it happens neither were mentioned to the health visitor on their first visit to the couple and Preston the next day.

The older I get, the more I think that some individuals just need to be deleted off the face of this earth.
