Hey lovelies, long time no speak!

I'm now 29 weeks and have my baby shower in a few weeks - I've started an Amazon wish list, but it's so overwhelming! Any advice on what I should ask for? I've got a variety of people attending from close family and friends to people who have known me since I was a baby, so I don't want to seem cheeky but we want all the help me we can get if that makes sense?

Most items we already have, but it's the more practical bits / baby care bits we're thinking of, and I'm someone who thrives with a list 😂
What bits do you have already and then we can fill in the gaps :)

Nappies, nappies and more nappies and wipes (If you have a place to store) because you are always going to need them. I wouldn’t say a load of baby wash etc as you dont want to be stuck with loads if it doesn’t agree with babies skin

Take the number of muslin cloths that you’ll think you’ll need and double it 🤣

Had our “20 week” scan (at 18+5 as we’re going on holiday lol) and everything is looking good. I feel so much better and feel like I can start to get excited and maybe buy things! Decided not to find out the gender I’m proud I didn’t crack haha

Booked my third and final private scan for this pregnancy - having a 4D scan on the 13th and I'm so excited to see his little squishy face!
I really do not enjoy pregnancy, the aches, pains, tiredness and weight gain of it all, but my fave bits have for SURE been the scans and the kicks, I could watch him on the screen and kicking me for literal hours 😭 can't wait to be a mom of two ❤

I agree the scans definitely make it worthwhile! I must admit I’ve been miserable most of this pregnancy I cannot wait for it to be over. I don’t understand seeing posts on forums of ladies loving pregnancy 🫣😭

Think I’m more fed up today than I was last week in the heat. I just have no energy or drive to do anything. Took toddler to his swimming lesson this morning and it was so hard. We’re going to see if he does any better next week in the preschool class where parents wait outside (I have doubts, it’ll either be great or he’ll get kicked out as he doesn‘t bloody listen and just wants to do his own thing all the time).

My right foot won’t stop swelling up and I’m sure I’ve got another UTI coming as I feel so mildly under the weather, but because I’m at home not doing a lot I can focus on how my body feels and I think I’m hyper aware of it now.

And we still haven’t got the bedroom set up for baby, or the pram and car seat down… and no nesting instinct yet  I kinda want to start harvesting colostrum but I’m not sure if it’s too early (not 36 weeks yet) though it definitely seems to have started production!

Is anyone else sleeping terribly ?

i didn’t have insomnia until my third trimester with my other two pregnancies but im 16 weeks and as you can see by the time of posting , im struggling

I’m up twice in the night to have a wee . Can’t get comfortable , tossing and turning . And when I do finally sleep , I have such vivid dreams it doesn’t feel like I’ve been to sleep at all . Just woken up from one where I was out to dinner at a restaurant that had a huge menu and I was being pressured by the waiter to order but I hadn’t read the whole thing and didn’t know 😅

I feel like first trimester tired again in the day , slugging though , mum guilt through the roof as I’m like a zombie with my kids . 😭

Just looking for some advice, since my first midwife appointment I’ve made it clear I want an elective c section (I understand the risks of c section but equally there are risks to a natural birth). My midwife has constantly made comments that a consultant would need to review and ‘make the decision’ or ‘sign off on it’ and also put on my notes that I have an ‘extreme fear of childbirth’ - I don’t have a fear of childbirth, it is a variety of reasons (I won’t bore you all 🤣 but none stem from a fear of childbirth). At my 16 week appointment my ‘extreme fear’ was mentioned again and that perhaps I’d change my mind. I made it clear again that I had no fear, it was my personal decision and I would not change my mind. A consultant reviewed my notes yesterday electronically and I have now received an appointment for when I’ll be 28 weeks to see the obstetrics team - is this an indicator that the c section has been ‘approved’? I hate saying that as I thought it’s our choice how we give birth. Just trying to work out if it’ll mean yet more arguing/explaining when I could not have made it clearer since my 7 weeks appointment.

Not sure on that as it’s not a process that I’ve been down but if it’s your first, I imagine the scrutiny is because there’s a huge amount of pressure on trusts atm regarding the extremely high C section rate and some places are getting a lot of backlash/bad press about how many C sections are happening. I suspect they might want to push you towards speaking to a mental health or consultant midwife? I expect you have a huge amount of arguing coming your way - sorry! Happy to be corrected though :)

I think we live in a really weird maternity world, where women’s voices are respected as above all but at the same time the over medicalisation of birth is pushed forward too. 30 years ago it would’ve been unheard of to say from day 1 you’re having an elective C section and won’t consider any other type of birth.

This is my third pregnancy and I've never experienced insomnia like this before. I've barely slept since week 12. If I start to drift off my feet start swelling and aching/hurting. I didnt get a minute last night 😥 I've taken the rest of the week off work to try and rest in the day as I've only a few weeks left now. Be nice to have one nights sleep before he arrives!

I am thinking about giving acupuncture a go - I'll let you know if it helps. I feel exactly the same, I feel like my little ones hate me because I cant do much with them and theyre all for fun dad 😫

I’ve had really bad insomnia for weeks now starting just before my third trimester. I’m 38 weeks and don’t know how I’ve survived this long as until last week I was working and I have a toddler too. I’m now on mat leave and tbh it’s not that helpful as resting in the day isn’t the same as getting sleep at night. I just feel groggy and out of it, plus physically so weak. It seems to be getting worse too. The last two nights I was wide awake until about 5am. I can fall asleep in the early morning but then my toddler wakes up! It’s actually torture for me but I’m just trying to focus on getting near the end. The midwife wasn’t helpful and said it’s one of those things. I tried magnesium too but didn’t make a difference.

It’s really affected my mental health as I have nothing to look forward to in the day! I’m literally counting down the hours until the baby is out of me!

@yankydoo I feel ya. First time round I was so excited to get on mat leave, sort the house out, do things I wanted to do. This time round I’m just starting my 3rd week of mat leave and I‘m in bed between the hours of 8pm and 11am, haven’t sorted anything out and have no drive to do anything.

It's not so much a case of being approved because even if the specific consultant you are under will not do the c-section for you, they have a duty to refer you to one who will. Under NICE guidelines, as long as you are making an informed decision, you cannot be forced into any sort of birth.

I would hazard a guess that the appointment you've been given is to go through the pros and cons of the c-section and to potentially steer you towards a vaginal birth. Go armed with what you want and why and stay firm. If your doctor won't do it, ask to be referred on to one who will.

I’m in the same boat . I have a midwife appointment next week and I’m going to ask if there’s anything I can do or they can give me to help with the lack of sleep . I blamed the heat last week but now it’s back to normal temps I’m still suffering hugely . It’s giving me such bad headaches too :( I hate to be a moaner and know how lucky I am to be on my third pregnancy but it’s hard out here !

keep me posted if the acupuncture works ! Would be interested to hear your experience 🩷

I had insomnia in my pregnancy pretty much from the positive test to the birth. It was A LOT. I did remember reading on an earlier pregnancy thread that melatonin might be pregnancy safe. To be honest I never asked my midwife about it but it’s something those of you struggling could maybe ask your midwives?

I asked my MH midwife about insomnia in pregnancy recently, she said there wasn’t a lot you can do about it but suggested mindfulness and getting up, doing a task then going back to bed.

Thanks so much - more explaining what I thought I had already made clear - will prepare my notes 🤣

It’s my first and that makes sense about the pressure they’re under as I’ve heard on repeat from my midwife the statistics of c sections increasing. I’m just finding it frustrating with repeating myself and the reasons, then having a label of being fearful of childbirth when my reasons aren’t related to that and them ignoring placing things on my notes (I’ve been offered the flu jab 3 times despite my notes stating I have an egg allergy) 🤯. I’ll just be prepared to explain again - at this rate this has been the worst part of being pregnant 🤣
