I was told this with my first! Ended up being induced at 42 weeks and he was 8lb 2 so not massive at all considering he was 15 days over when he got here. I’m measuring big again but desperately wanting to avoid induction
Seems to be a trend of babies measuring big and then being a normal size! I’d love to go into labour naturally and have a water birth! But we shall see 🤣

Just to give you hope, I was the same bmi I am now with my first and only a few years younger - I only had gas & air and laboured for 7 hours. Everything was very quick.
I think my bigger fear is pre-eclampsia or something popping up out of nowhere. Not helped by having had a really intense couple of weeks. I was just a bit horrified by the idea a balloon would be going anywhere near me. I’m not sure how I thought inductions worked but… they didn’t involve balloons 🤣🤣 (I get they won’t be party balloons but I can’t get the image out my head of a midwife blowing a balloon up in my va-jay-jay like it’s a party that only my son is invited to…)

No, not all. Hypnobirthing is amazing and there's a lot of research to back it up. It's about working with the pain, reframing it and using your bodies own built in pain relief to work with it. They aren't anti pain meds at all, just giving another option. I intend to use hypnobirthing and gas and air if needed.
I’m sure it is, I wasn’t slating it as such, I just got really ‘do it without anything’ vibes from the Scotland book when I read it but I’ve found all of it a bit overwhelming. I have a pretty high pain threshold I think (I guess that’s about to be put to the test!). It’s not like I’ll be the first or last woman to do this. Probably not even the first or last on whatever day young JuniorDragName is born!

im in Scotland and had excellent midwife care from community to postnatal. I had a difficult time labouring/delivering which I won’t go into here obviously but they were very pro-anything I wanted to do. Had my (much asked for 🤣) epidural 30 minutes after being shown to the labour ward and even though things had to move quickly for mine and baby’s sake the midwives and doctor present went slowly as possible and explained the options I did have.
of course I know we may well not be in the same area of Scotland but thought I’d share a positive!

I’m sure there was something released very recently about ‘big babies’ and that of all the babies suspected to be big, only a very small percentage actually were? I can’t for the life of me find it but I’m sure i didn’t dream it🤣
Essentially, they have no idea how big your baby is. They got it wrong with me but in the opposite way - told he’d be average and he wasn’t 😂 so the margin of error is so big you can’t really believe a word they say - madness!

My care’s been good so far (except the horrible sonographer but I’m over it because I met a lovely sonographer at the 20 week scan who was so great I wrote a compliment letter into the patient experience team because they should clone her), the student midwife and named midwife were a bit… frantic in how much information they threw at us, but they have said over and over that everything is mine/our choice. I just found how the book was a bit off putting about pain management but it’s only a book I suppose!

The place I’m choosing to give birth has hit the headline for how… bad…it is but I got part of the way through the report and the media has kind of over hyped it. They’ve got areas for improvement but the mums they interviewed in the inspections all seemed happy enough. I’ve been staggered by the unfettered access I’ve had to other NHS departments. I’m suddenly getting support for things I’ve had for years that have been dismissed by GPs and all of a sudden I say something to the midwife and I get an extra blood test or an instant physio referral that was accepted within about a day. When I mention back pain to that physio she immediately refers me onwards to another physio to specifically help me with my back pain whilst she deals with other aspects of me. As a person whose been dismissed by GPs as recently as last year for just being large, I’m blown away by all this!

I feel like I've been burying my head in the sand a bit and not thinking about the actual labour 🤣 but know I need to start thinking about a birth plan etc soon.
A close friend and my sister both had traumatic labours which ended up in emergency c sections which does make me worry, so hearing some positive birth stories definitely helps as well. But i am fully aware not everything goes to plan and am trying to stay open minded which is easier said than done with my anxiety!
I have been listening to a hypno birthing audio book that has actually been interesting and helpful.
Yes, definitely listen to positive birth stories. Bad ones are like bad news, people talk about them because they are bad and need to speak about them to work through them but many people have positive births or OK births.

If it reassures anyone, I had an incredibly positive birthing experience with Baby Lava. I leaned on hypnobirthing and yoga breathing techniques and squeezed a comb when I felt contractions in the 3-7cm bit. After that I got in the pool which was amazing. Used gas and air too which helped. I had some first degree tearing and also found gas and air helpful for that when they were stitching me too. Only bit that wasn’t great was they had to pop my waters annd they ended up giving Baby Lava a scar on his head :( Obviously it hurt giving birth but no trauma. I know I am very lucky in this respect but just as an alternative story from what you can hear from friends and friends of friends lol.

We’ve just booked our early scan for Saturday. So nervous now 😭 I’ll be just over 8 weeks. Some days I think it’s ok others I’m convinced it will be another missed miscarriage.

Yes to that listen positive stories. People for some reason love to share negative stories suddenly when you are pregnant? And I think they hate it that I ignore them mostly and don't go in a spiral of worrying.
Same thing makes me feel shy to share that this like 28w growing in my belly is a very lucky first everything on ivf, I know I got "lucky" and don't want to rub it on the faces of those who's journey is harder.

I've been convinced by your posts to read a book on hypnobirthing.

@LavaFlake try to stay positive. Was there with this one because I had bleeding from weeks 7-10 and convinced I was miscarriaging and baby was absolutely fine. Crossing my fingers for you and mini lava.

Did you find the comb helped? I keep seeing adverts pop up on Tik Tok atm and wondered if it's worth trying!
It's so nerve wracking that initial waiting period before you have a scan but I hope it all goes well!

It was so helpful! I literally just bought a wide toothed comb from super drug for a couple of quid and used that.

I am a huuuuge advocate for the comb! This was my third labour and the only time I’ve used a comb, was 10/10! Combined with a tens machine too.. game changer! Dunno how I coped twice before with out it 🤣

I’m very interested in the comb thing! What’s the theory behind it? Just shifting pain receptors? I’ll def be bringing one with me, maybe two in case the first one breaks 😆

Just to say baby pup measures consistently (over 5 odd scans) in the 90% - off the scale range. Predicted 10lb and they said they were already 8lb at something like 36wks. Arrived at 39+1wks at 7lb7.

I’ve just ordered myself a comb after reading your comment! Hopefully I like it 🤣

All the TikToks I’ve been getting have been scathing over the comb. Isn’t it funny how the FYPs work?!

im curious about it, in my head you were lightly dragging the comb over skin 🤣 or have your birthing partner comb your head or something. Are we actually digging the teeth into the palms of the hands?
I remain open minded to all of it, and I am honestly taking what I see on tiktok with a pinch of salt as well!

I used a comb and it was great- just a regular fine tooth hair comb, held so tightly it indented the palm of my hand🤣 Its hard to say how much it really helps, but in the moment it felt like the comb was doing all the work

Yeah I just squeezed it in the palm of my hand. It definitely helped distract from the pain and when the contractions are bad you want to grip onto things anyway, so worked well! I reckon for a couple of quid for a cheap comb it’s definitely worth packing in your hospital bag if you’re hoping for a vaginal birth.

I have a friend who swears by the comb - she gave birth to an almost 9lb baby and that was the only pain relief she used!
